Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The First Trial

Kaden's hand lingered in the air, still warm from the contact with the Unseen Hunter. He could feel the ethereal vibrations of its energy beneath his fingertips, like a faint pulse from some ancient heartbeat. The creature, now mere inches from him, stared at him with its fiery red eyes. Its form still flickered like smoke in the early morning mist, but the presence of a bond—fragile, tenuous—was undeniable.

The forest was alive with the sounds of the Wilds, but they felt distant, as though the world was holding its breath in a shared moment of silence. The Unseen Hunter had allowed him to touch it. That alone was an achievement many Tamers could only dream of. Yet Kaden knew that this was only the beginning.

"Taming you won't be easy," he muttered, more to himself than to the creature. He wasn't sure why he felt the need to speak, but it felt right, like the words had always been there, waiting to be said.

The creature cocked its head slightly, its glowing eyes narrowing in what Kaden could only describe as curiosity. It stepped back, its shadowy form swirling around him like a dark cloud. Kaden remained still, waiting, allowing the beast to lead.

The bond they had just established was weak—an emotional tether, perhaps—but it was still something. And it was far more than any other Tamer had achieved with this particular beast. The Unseen Hunter was known for its isolation, for its utter refusal to be controlled or tamed. It was a creature that struck terror into the hearts of the strongest Tamers. Yet Kaden stood here, no longer fighting the beast, but understanding it.

A sudden rustle of leaves broke his concentration. A figure appeared from the mist—a tall, slender woman draped in flowing robes that shimmered like the night sky. Her dark hair fell around her shoulders in loose waves, and her sharp, gray eyes locked onto Kaden. She was no ordinary traveler; she was a Tamer, and a powerful one at that.

"Quite the feat, Kaden Acheron," she said, her voice smooth, almost melodic. "I didn't think anyone would be able to even approach the Unseen Hunter, let alone bond with it."

Kaden's hand instinctively reached for the dagger at his side, though he knew this woman wasn't an immediate threat. He could feel the power radiating from her, like an energy he couldn't quite define, but it was not the kind of power that made one feel safe. It was something darker, more dangerous.

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice steady despite the unease settling in his chest.

The woman smiled, though it was a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "My name is Lyra. I am a Tamer, like you. And I have been watching you for quite some time, Kaden. Your connection to the beasts is… impressive. But dangerous."

Kaden's heart skipped a beat. "Watching me?"

"Yes," Lyra said, stepping forward with deliberate grace. "You've been leaving a trail across the Wilds. The beasts… they're responding to you. Not all of them will be as… cooperative as this one," she gestured toward the Unseen Hunter, which still circled Kaden with quiet curiosity. "You're walking a fine line, Kaden. Too much power, too much influence over the beasts, and you risk becoming a danger to them… and to yourself."

Kaden took a step back, his eyes narrowing. "What do you want from me?"

Lyra tilted her head. "Nothing, for now. But there is something you should know." She paused, as if measuring her words. "The beasts of the Wilds are not just wild animals. They are… forces. Ancient forces. And there are others, like me, who seek to understand them, control them, or even… use them. You're not the only one trying to tame them."

A chill ran down Kaden's spine. "So, what? You're warning me?"

"Not exactly." Lyra's expression darkened. "You're more than capable of becoming something great, Kaden. But be careful. There are people who would kill to have the kind of bond you share with these creatures."

A heavy silence hung between them. Kaden glanced at the Unseen Hunter, which was now lying down beside him, its flickering form still but watchful. The bond between them felt deeper now, even more real, and that terrified him. How could he control something this powerful without losing himself?

"Why do you care?" Kaden asked, his voice low and skeptical.

Lyra smiled again, this time more genuinely. "Because, in the end, we all share the same fate. The Wilds will claim those who are too reckless. It's only a matter of time. I've seen it before."

She turned on her heel, beginning to fade into the mist. "If you survive long enough, you might even see it too."
