Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: New Beginnings and Old Friends

As we settled into our new life, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The mansion was a distant memory, and our new home, though cozy, was a constant reminder of what we had lost. The first days in the house were tough. Mom was trying her best to stay strong, but I could see the pain in her eyes. She would often wander around the house, lost in thought, and I knew she was thinking about Dad.

With only a month left before school resumed, I knew I had to find a job to assist Mom, as she needed to rest due to her poor health. It wasn't easy, but after a week of research, I finally landed a job as a waitress at a small restaurant a little far from our house. The salary wasn't high, but at least I had some income. I asked my boss if I could work from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, which he agreed to, but he had to reduce my salary. It was painful, but I knew it was the right decision.

When I started working, everything seemed fine. At first, my coworkers were friendly and welcoming. They showed me the ropes and helped me adjust to the busy pace of the restaurant. But as the days went by, I started to notice that some of the regular customers would stare at me or make snide comments about my clothes or my hair. I tried to brush it off, but it was hard to ignore. And then, there were the girls at school. They would whisper to each other whenever I walked by, and I knew they were talking about me.

I felt like I was living in a constant state of anxiety, never knowing when someone would make a hurtful comment or gesture. But I was determined to keep going, for Mom's sake and for mine.

One day, as I was walking home from work, I saw a group of girls from school standing outside the restaurant. They were laughing and chatting, and I knew they were waiting for me. My heart sank, but I stood up straight and walked towards them. I wasn't going to let them intimidate me.

As I approached, they turned to face me, their smiles fading into sneers.

"Well, well, well, look what we have here," one of them said, eyeing me up and down. "The poor little rich girl, slumming it as a waitress."

I felt a surge of anger, but I bit my tongue. I wasn't going to let them get to me.

"Just leave me alone," I said, trying to sound calm.

But they just laughed. "Oh, we're just getting started," one of them said, stepping closer to me.

I stood my ground, my heart pounding in my chest. But just as things were starting to escalate, a car pulled up to the curb. The window rolled down, and a familiar face smiled out at me. "Hey, Samantha! Need a ride?"

It was Alex, a guy from school who had been my friend. I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I should get in the car with him. But the girls were still standing there, staring at me with a mixture of curiosity and malice. I didn't want to deal with them anymore.

" Yeah, thanks," I said, opening the door and getting in.

As we drove away, I looked back and saw the girls staring after us, their faces twisted in disappointment.

"Thanks for rescuing me," I said, turning to Alex.

He smiled. "No problem. I saw them harassing you and thought I'd step in."

We drove in silence for a moment, and then Alex asked, "So, how's it going? I've noticed you've been working at the restaurant."

I shrugged. "It's okay, I guess. I'm just trying to help out my mom."

Alex nodded sympathetically. "I know how that is. My family's been through some tough times too."

We talked for a bit longer, and I found myself opening up to Alex in a way I never had before. As we talked, I realized that Alex was more than just a friendly face. He was kind, empathetic, and genuinely interested in listening to me.

Before I knew it, we had arrived at my house. Alex turned off the engine and turned to me.

"Hey, thanks for talking with me, Samantha," he said, smiling. "I feel like I really understand you now."

I smiled back, feeling a connection with him that I hadn't felt with anyone in a long time.

"No problem, Alex. Thanks for listening," I said.

As I got out of the car, Alex called out to me.

"Hey, Samantha?"

I turned back to him. "Yeah?"

"Would you like to grab coffee with me sometime? Maybe this weekend?"

My heart skipped a beat. Was Alex asking me out?

I smiled, trying to play it cool. "Yeah, that sounds great."

Alex grinned and nodded. "Awesome. I'll pick you up at 2 PM on Saturday?"

I nodded, still smiling. "Sounds perfect."

I walked into the house, still thinking about my encounter with Alex. We had been friends once, or at least, we had hung out in the same crowd. But after my family lost everything, Alex had stopped talking to me. It hurt at the time, but I had tried to move on. Now, as I thought about our conversation earlier, I wondered why Alex had reached out to me after all this time.

Mom noticed my distant expression and asked, "Hey, sweetie, what's wrong?"

I shrugged. "Just thinking about Alex. We used to be friends, but he stopped talking to me after... everything."

Mom nodded sympathetically. "People can be cruel when they don't understand what someone's going through."

I sighed. "I guess you're right. But it still hurts."

Mom got up and gave me a hug. "I'm sorry, sweetie. But maybe Alex has grown up a bit and realizes what a jerk he was."

I smiled slightly. "Maybe."

As I got ready for bed, I couldn't shake off the feeling that Alex's sudden interest in me was suspicious. Was he genuinely trying to make amends, or was there something else going on? I pushed the thoughts aside and tried to focus on the positive. Maybe Alex had changed, and maybe we could even be friends again.

The next day, I went about my routine, working at the restaurant and helping Mom with chores. But my mind kept wandering back to Alex and our upcoming coffee date. As Saturday approached, I found myself getting more and more nervous. What would we talk about? Would it be awkward?

Mom noticed my anxiety and offered some reassuring words. "Just be yourself, sweetie. And don't worry if it's awkward at first. You two used to be friends, after all."

I took a deep breath and tried to calm my nerves. Maybe, just maybe, this coffee date would be the start of something new and positive...
