Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Night Anna Died

It rained the night Lily was born.

It came down in sheets against the windows of St. Mary's Hospital, so loud that the nurses had to raise their voices.

Edward Thompson stood in the corridor with his tie loosened and his hands shaking, listening to a sound he would never forget. It was not his daughter's first cry. It was the silence that came after the doctor stopped speaking.

"Mr. Thompson." The doctor looked tired and sorry. "We did everything we could. Your wife lost too much blood."

Edward did not understand at first. Anna had been laughing that morning. She had been folding tiny yellow blankets and arguing with him about names. She had wanted Lily, after her grandmother.

"And the baby?"

"The baby is healthy. A little girl. She is perfect."

A nurse carried her out in a white blanket. Edward looked down at the small red face, the dark damp hair, the fists curled tight as though she were already holding on to something, and he felt his heart go cold and numb.

He could not take her.

"Sir?" the nurse said gently. "Would you like to hold your daughter?"

"I can't," he whispered. "I'm sorry. I can't."

He turned and walked into the rain without an umbrella, and for the next four years, a hired nurse raised Lily Thompson in a big quiet house while her father worked late and slept in the study.

He was not a cruel man. He was a broken one. He bought her toys she was too young to play with.

He kissed her forehead when she was asleep. He sent her photographs of himself from every city he visited, signed Papa, and she kept them in a shoebox.

But when she ran to him with open arms, he would stiffen, as if her warmth reminded him of what he had lost.

Lily learned early that her father loved her from far away.

What she did not know was that the house was about to change. A woman was already walking toward it, polished and smiling, with two little girls beside her and a plan.

On Lily's fourth birthday, Edward came home with a cake and a stranger.

"Lily," he said, kneeling stiffly beside her chair. "This is Cecilia. She is going to be part of our family."

The woman bent down. She had a lovely face, a pearl necklace, and a smile that stopped just short of her eyes.

"What a pretty little girl," said Cecilia.

Behind her, two girls stared. The taller one, about six, wore a blue dress and a frown. The smaller one hid behind her mother's skirt and giggled.

"This is Clara," said Cecilia, "and this is Evelyn. Say hello to your new sister, girls."

Clara looked Lily up and down, from her plain cardigan to her scuffed shoes.

"She's smaller than me," she said.

"She is," Cecilia agreed, in a voice so soft that only Lily heard what was underneath it.

That night, Lily lay in bed holding her mother's gold locket, the one thing Anna had left her, and listened to laughter in the downstairs hall.

It was a happy sound. It was the first time the house had sounded happy.

She wondered why it made her feel so alone.
