Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: For What it's Worth

===July 31 1994===

Everyone has stopped and is looking towards them. "I'm going to ask again." Amanda says. "What the fuck just happened?"

"I… I don't know." Draco admits.

By this time everyone else has formed a ring around them. Randy pushes through the ring and grabs Amanda. "Are you alright?"

"I think so." Amanda answers, obviously unsure.

"Someone had better explain what's going on here." Randy says.

"It's a rather delicate situation." Dumbledore says, somehow standing beside them.

"That sounds like something that the Chancellor of that school in Massachusetts would say." Randy states.

"Chancellor Sarah Good?" Dumbledore asks with a twinkle in his eye.

"Wait, wait." Randy says in shock. "You know her?"

"I most certainly do. Sarah is the Chancellor for the Salem Magic Academy, we meet every summer. My name is Albus Dumbledore, and I'm the Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

"Did you say Hogwarts?" Amanda asks.

"I did." Dumbledore answers.

Amanda turns and looks at Hermione. "You're a witch?"

Hermione nods. "And so are you."

Amanda nods them her eyes widen as she looks at Harry "Then you're him, aren't you?" She says in astonishment. "The only person to survive the killing curse."

"Damn, I'm famous even in the States." Harry jokes

"Perhaps we can get back to the matter at hand?" Randy asks.

"Sorry," Amanda says.

"Now, Headmaster, would you care to explain what's going on with my daughter?." Randy asks.

"Are you familiar with the concept of soulmates?" Dumbledore asks

"Two people that are perfect for each other." Amanda says. "Everyone is saying that's what Hermione and Harry are."

Dumbledore nods. "There's another type called magical soulmates, or magic-mates. They are exceptionally rare. I've only seen one other set in my entire life."

"So, what are you saying?" Randy asks.

"When Mister Malfoy kissed your daughter's hand their magic resonated with each other. The result is they are now married." Dumbledore explains.

"No, no, no!" Amanda says, obviously panicking. "This can't be happening."

"Unfortunately it is." Lucius says.

Amanda looks up at her now father-in-law. "We haven't done anything, can't we just annul it?"

"Magic has already accepted your marriage. It can not be annulled." Lucius says.

"How about a divorce?" Amanda asks hopefully.

"I'm afraid not," Dumbledore explains. "A magical marriage is until death, and since you're soulmates if one of you dies so does the other."

"So what happens now?" Amanda asks.

"I would suggest you come home with us." Lucius says. "After all you are now Missus Malfoy."

"First off I don't recall agreeing to any of this, especially changing my name." Amanda says. "Second, I don't care what magic says I'm going home tomorrow."

"I'm afraid that's not a good idea." Lucius says.

"Look, I'm sorry that magic did this, but as far as I'm concerned we're," she gestures between her and Draco, "not married. I'm going to go home and live my life."

"If you don't consummate the marriage within a year you'll both be stripped of your magic." Dumbledore says.

"Then once we're stripped of magic we won't be married anymore, right?" Amanda asks.

"Since your marriage is magical in nature, then yes." Dumbledore answers.

"That works for me." Amanda says.

"You can't be serious!" Draco says. "Magic is part of your life, you can't just give it up like that!"

"Why not?" Amanda asks. "I did just fine the first 11 years of my life not even knowing it existed. I've been taking correspondence courses, so it wouldn't be hard for me to go back to muggle school."

"I'm nothing without magic." Draco pleads.

Amanda sighs. "Seriously?"

"I was raised in the magical world."

"That sounds like a you problem." Amanda says.

McGonagall pushes forward. "Might I make a suggestion?" Everyone looks at her. "Amanda, why don't you transfer to Hogwarts for the year and give Draco a chance to woo you?"

Amanda groans as she thinks it over. Hermione pushes through to her. "I think you should do it." Hermione says. "It'll be fun. We'll have a couple of classes together, no matter where you're sorted, and you can come sit at the Gryffindor table even if you're sorted elsewhere."

"What house are you in Draco?" Amanda asks.

"Slytherin."

Amanda shudders. "The one house famous for dark wizards, great."

"I don't think Draco is too bad." Harry says, now standing beside .Hermione. "After all, he saved my life."

Amanda scoffs. "How did he save your life?"

"Our second year, during a Quidditch match a bludger broke my arm. I was forced to use the other hand to get the snitch. I lost my balance and fell. Draco caught me."

Amanda looks at Draco, something about Harry's story didn't sound right to her. Even if they both played seeker the odds of Draco being in the right place at the right time to catch Harry were slim. The whole situation sounded machiavellian to her. So with a need to know more she sighs. "Fine, but I have a couple conditions."

Draco looks at her, eyebrows raised. "I'm listening."

"First, if they let me, I'd prefer to stay with my uncle and aunt on the muggle side." Amanda says.

"That's fine, you can stay in Hermione's room for the summer." Helen says.

"Thank you." Amanda then turns to Draco. "I'm willing to try this one step at a time, we can go out on a date."

"Date?" Draco says the word with more than a little confusion.

Amanda sighs. "You didn't have a girlfriend before this did you?"

"I have plenty of girl friends." Draco says. "Pansy, Daphne, Millicent, Tracy, and Anise."

Hermione pinches the bridge of her nose as she sighs. "That's not what she meant. Did you take anyone to Hogsmeade?" Hermione asks.

"Pansy, but we knew our marriage was being arranged." Draco admits.

Hermione sighs. "Of course."

"I can help Draco and Amanda." Ginny says. "If they want."

"In that case you should stay with us too." Helen says. "Might be a good idea for you to stay too Draco."

"The house will be full, but we can make this work." Richard says.

"Maybe we should cancel our honeymoon." Hermione suggests.

"No!" Amanda says. "You two go enjoy yourselves, let us deal with this."

"Are you sure?" Harry asks.

"We're going to be here for her." Helen says.

"We'll think of her like we would Hermione." Richard says.

"I'm not sure how I feel about that since you married Hermione off." Randy says.

"It's her choice." Richard says. "We just support her."

Hermione puts her hand on her uncle's shoulder. "They'll take care of her."

"What about Draco?" Randy asks.

"I think I can handle him." Amanda says.

"If not I'll help her." Ginny says. "After all I have 6 older brothers." She pauses. "Actually 7 now."

"Good." Hermione says. "Now Ananda, when you get to my room, there's a rough draft of a book I'm writing on my desk."

"You want me to put it up?" Amanda asks.

"I want Draco and Ginny to read it. It's called A Wizard's Guide to the Muggle World. It might help them adjust."

"When did you find time to write it?" Ginny asks.

"I might have abused the time turner a little last year." Hermione admits.
