Chapter 4: The Rules of the Mansion
On the second day after the wedding, Xiao Mei began to adjust to life in the grand mansion.
She noticed that all the housemaids became silent and obedient whenever Lu Zeyan was around. No one dared to speak unless instructed.
During lunch, Xiao Mei tried to start a light conversation with Lu Zeyan. However, he only responded with short, cold replies. The atmosphere quickly turned awkward and quiet once again.
Xiao Mei started to feel suffocated by the strict rules of the house. She was required to wake up at 6 a.m., wear formal clothes during meals, and wasn't allowed to use her phone without permission. Everything was tightly controlled — she felt like a prisoner.
One evening, while walking through the living room, Xiao Mei noticed an old painting hanging on the wall — a portrait of a woman who looked very much like Lu Zeyan. Her heart stirred with curiosity. Who was that woman? Was Lu Zeyan hiding something from her?
That night, Xiao Mei accidentally broke an antique vase in the living room. The loud crash startled everyone. Lu Zeyan immediately came over, his face filled with what seemed like anger — but his reaction left Xiao Mei confused.
He didn't scold or yell at her like she had expected. Instead, he simply said, "Be careful next time," and walked away.
