Chapter 6 - Born in silence, Carried by the Divine

Chapter 6: Born in Silence, Carried by the Divine

The silence of the palace was unnatural the night I was born. No cries of celebration, no chanting of priests. Only the faint crackling of torches and the cold breath of fear.

I opened my eyes quietly.

A child wrapped in divine armor, marked by glowing earrings, yet untouched by warmth.

My name was not whispered. My existence, hidden.

Lady Kunti—my birth mother—held me at arm's length. Her eyes trembled. I could sense her heartbeat… not of joy, but dread.

For a full week, she kept me in secret. No priest summoned. No lullabies sung.

Not even a drop of milk touched my lips.

I was hungry.

But I did not cry.

I endured, sustained only by the divine blessings granted at birth.

Nutrition replaced by divine energy. Mortality averted.

Mother-child bond unstable… error…

No emotional connection established.

The maid who helped in my birth—a kind, older woman—had begged Kunti daily.

"He is your son, my lady. Please… feed him. Let him live."

But Kunti's heart was heavy with fear and pride. The shame of an unwed mother, the terror of discovery… they crushed her will.

On the seventh night, Kunti made her decision.

"No one must know," she whispered.

The maid, faithful and innocent, tried once more.

"My lady, the child—"

With shaking hands, Kunti struck her down.

One… two… three strikes. Her screams drowned in silence.

Blood on royal hands.

Goddess Ganga invoked by karmic resonance.

When the palace slept, she crept out with me—wrapped in silk, placed in a golden basket.

The moonlit river shimmered.

She paused.

"I'm sorry… but if you die, it's the river's fault. Not mine."

She let the basket go and walked away.

But someone had seen everything.

From beneath the waters, Goddess Ganga had watched. Her divine gaze turned cold.

"So… the sin is mine now?" she said quietly.

As my basket floated, she rose from the waters and cradled me in her arms.

Her touch was cold but safe.

"This child bears no blame… and yet his life is discarded like filth."

She fed me nectar, divine and sweet. For the first time, I felt warmth.

Then, with fury in her heart, she flew upwards—rushing toward Swarga.

But Swarga Lokam was sealed. A divine barrier pulsed across the heavenly gate.

Startled, Ganga stepped back.

"What is this? Why am I blocked?"

Light shimmered behind the clouds.

From the blazing sky descended a figure wrapped in gold—the radiant Surya Deva.

"Why are you here, Ganga?" he asked gently, though his eyes remained firm.

She turned. "This child was wronged. I came to seek shelter for him in Swarga."

Surya looked at me… and for a moment, there was something in his gaze.

He said no words of claim.

But Ganga's divine intuition stirred.

"…He carries your light," she murmured.

Surya looked away. "His future lies in the world below. He cannot enter Swarga—not now."

"Then what am I to do?" Ganga asked, voice trembling. "Abandon him again?"

"There are people below," Surya said, "who call upon me every morning. They ask for a child. They ask with hearts full of faith. Go to them. Test them. If they are worthy… he is theirs."

"Very well," she whispered. "But you didn't say he is your son."

Surya simply smiled, golden warmth spilling across the sky. "Not everything needs to be spoken."

Then he vanished into the sun.

And Ganga descended once more.

She watched as a couple—Radha and Adhiratha—offered their daily prayers to Surya Deva.

"Please bless us with a child… even if it's not ours," Radha prayed.

Ganga tested their hearts with divine magic. They passed without hesitation.

She placed me in a new golden basket, along with treasures, and sent me floating to their path.

Adhiratha spotted it and rushed toward it.

But when he saw the gold, he hesitated.

"This… this is not right."

He turned to put the basket back into the river.

"No," Radha stopped him. "Forget the gold. Look at the child."

She lifted me up, unwrapped the silk, and gently began washing me from head to toe. She scrubbed every trace of palace scent away.

And as she gazed into my face…

"You are my son. I don't care who left you or why. You are mine now."

A sudden warmth spread through her body. Her heart pulsed. She gasped.

"I… I can feel it. Milk… it's flowing…!"

The heavens shimmered with light.

Later, my new parents brought me to the palace of the Kuru Kingdom, hoping for blessings.

The court was majestic. At its heart stood King Dhritarashtra, blind but dignified, and beside him, Queen Gandhari—her eyes covered by cloth in a vow of shared blindness.

Adhiratha stepped forward, holding me gently.

"My King, My Queen… this is our child. We seek only your blessings."

They revealed nothing of my origin. No river, no basket, no divine signs.

Only love.

Queen Gandhari took me into her arms. Her touch was gentle. I looked up at her, curious.

Such a beautiful woman.

"Why does she cover her eyes?" I thought.

Innocently, I reached up and tugged the cloth.

Gasps rang out. The cloth slipped from her face.

And then…

Light.

Her eyes—warm and alive—locked with mine. Tears spilled down her cheeks.

Ministers screamed, "He's insulted the queen! Punish him!"

But the king stood.

"Enough," he said.

And then, he smiled.

"Let this boy, when he comes of age, be crowned King of Anga."

Shock echoed through the court.

"That's no punishment!"

"No punishment is heavier," the king said, "than having to rule over men at a young age."

Then he turned cold. "As for those who demanded punishment—each of you shall have gold poured into one eye. Let that remind you of your blindness."
