In the charity cemetery, Uncle Jiu asked Wencai to light three incense sticks for each old customer.
Wencai said "oh", and after he had done it for everyone, because Old Master Ren's coffin had just arrived today and there was no incense burner, he inserted the incense in the gap of the coffin.
Unexpectedly, the incense went out before it was inserted for a few seconds!
Wencai turned around and looked at the extinguished incense sticks, a little confused, so he lit a few more and inserted them, but this time it was even more outrageous, the incense flew out directly!
He was shocked and immediately ran to call his master and senior brother Qiu Sheng over.
"Master, there's something wrong with the coffin!"
"The coffin's fine, it's the deceased!"
Uncle Jiu knew it was Old Master Ren's reluctance to accept their offer, so he allowed the two to open the coffin lid.
"Wow, he's gained weight!"
Wencai remarked, noticing Old Master Ren's face had transformed from shriveled to plump.
Uncle Jiu glanced at Old Master Ren, who had gained considerably more weight than during the day, and immediately whispered, "Close it quickly!"
The two apprentices hurriedly closed the coffin, while Uncle Jiu had already captured a rooster and prepared to perform a ritual. He first bled the rooster, catching the blood in a basin. Then, using glutinous rice grains to ignite a fire, he burned talisman paper to refine the blood. He then mixed the blood with black ink and poured it into the Bagua mirror, creating a blood-ink solution that could repel zombies.
He poured blood-ink into the inkwell and handed it to his two apprentices: "Remember, tap all sides of Master Ren's coffin. This will calm him down and prevent him from escaping!"
"Yes, Master!"
Uncle Jiu nodded. He had other things to attend to, so he didn't stay at the funeral home and turned to leave.
After their master left, the two chatted while they began taping the coffin, quickly creating a series of neat little squares. However, since they were still young and playful, they chased and played around when they were almost done, completely ignoring Master Ren.
However, due to their negligence, they failed to tap the bottom of the coffin. As
they chased each other through the funeral home, Qiu Sheng even grabbed a stick and hid in the shadows, ready to give Wencai a good beating.
Hearing footsteps, Qiu Sheng smiled and gripped the stick tightly. When the approaching person came into view, he leaped up and brought down a powerful blow from above.
The stick struck Uncle Jiu's head, shattering in half.
Despite the shock, Uncle Jiu's eyes were dazed and he couldn't tell east from west.
Wencai had just run over, and upon seeing Uncle Jiu and his senior brother Qiu Sheng, his mouth dropped open. Qiu Sheng, quick-witted, threw the stick into his hands. Uncle Jiu, recovering, glared at Wencai, who was clutching the half-broken stick, and pointed a finger in his face.
Qiu Sheng darted outside, sticking incense sticks on the front of his bicycle to light his way home.
Wencai followed him out, and seeing him about to flee, he urged him to stay, as it was getting dark and dangerous to stay alone.
Thinking Wencai was trying to drag him into punishment, Qiu Sheng rode away without a word, leaving Wencai to face his master's wrath.
As Qiu Sheng made his way through the woods, several pale paper figures carrying a sedan chair moved through the darkness.
A beautiful woman in a bridal gown lifted the curtains. It was Dong Xiaoyu!
A woman… no, the ghostly Dong Xiaoyu glanced at Qiu Sheng, who was riding his bicycle. She shook her head slightly and sighed, "It's not him."
Qiu Sheng, unaware of the ghostly presence, quickly rode his bicycle away.
Late at night, Old Master Ren stirred within the cemetery.
He moved twice, disturbing the blood and ink above, and was suppressed, unable to escape.
The crash of his body against the coffin startled Uncle Jiu awake. Alarmed, he immediately lit a candle, ready to investigate.
Just then, Wencai turned over and began snoring.
Uncle Jiu glanced at him, thinking it was Wencai's voice that had disturbed him. He extinguished the candle and fell back asleep.
But this gave Old Master Ren the opportunity to escape.
At the Ren family residence, Ling Yun held Ren Tingting in his arms, whispering to her.
He had just conquered her, and with the miraculous effects of the ointment, she felt no pain at all. Nestled in Ling Yun's arms, she felt an indescribable sweetness.
"Cousin, you will marry me, right?"
Girls of this era were filled with longing and yearning for love. Most girls were arranged by their parents and matchmakers to marry men they might never have met, spending their lives together.
But Ren Tingting felt the greatest happiness in the world, being with the cousin she loved.
"I will, don't worry, Tingting."
Ling Yun hugged her and pecked her delicate nose. "Sleep well, it's getting late."
"Mm."
Ren Tingting slumped into his arms and closed her eyes. Exhausted, she quickly fell asleep, and Ling Yun, seeing her adorable sleeping form, closed his eyes too.
The next morning, Ling Yun had Ren Tingting dressed and slipped into his room, so Master Ren wouldn't notice.
Master Ren, however, felt a little puzzled as he watched his daughter grow increasingly beautiful, but seeing her gait seemed normal and nothing unusual, he didn't question her further.
After having breakfast with them, Ling Yun left, using the excuse of getting acquainted with the town, and went alone to the carpenter's shop.
"Master Ling, the things you requested are ready," the carpenter handed them to Ling Yun.
Ren Tingting had already paid in full yesterday. Ling Yun put the things into his interspatial ring and turned to leave.
He had only taken a few steps when he saw Ren Tingting waiting for him not far away, a faint smile on her face.
"Tingting, what are you doing here?"
"I knew you were here to get something." Ren Tingting stepped forward and took his arm, unconcerned about what others might say. "Let's go! I know Renjia Town well. I'll show you around!"
Ling Yun readily agreed, and the two of them strolled through the morning market like a normal couple.
"Hey, cousin, does this look good on me?"
Ren Tingting picked up a headdress, tucked it into her hair, and said to Ling Yun.
Ling Yun looked at her pretty face, examined it carefully, and nodded, "It looks good!"
He didn't give a perfunctory response, but rather a serious expression, which greatly pleased Ren Tingting. Without a second thought,
she immediately paid for it. After all, Master Ren was considered the richest man in Renjia Town, and as her only child, he doted on her deeply, so naturally, he had plenty of money. Just as the two of them were chatting and laughing, a commotion broke out nearby, and the crowd dispersed, clearing a path.
Several men in green uniforms approached, carrying guns, looking arrogant.
The leader, wearing glasses and slightly overweight, smiled as soon as he caught sight of Ren Tingting. However, his expression darkened as he looked at Ling Yun, who was leaning against her.
