Chapter 3: Blood on the Steps

The morning breeze rustled the bamboo leaves as Li-Wen stepped into the quiet courtyard, his face expressionless. Behind him, Wu-Wen rushed out of his quarters, his newly refined Sixth-Stage Ki surging under his skin as his face hardened with protective fury.

"Stay behind me, son," Wu-Wen said sternly, stepping in front of Li-Wen as they approached the front entrance. "Boss Bear has brought his enforcers, but I will not let them harm a single hair on your head!"

Li-Wen felt a faint spark of warmth in his chest at his father's protective gesture, but he merely shook his head gently. "There is no need for you to waste your energy on dirt, Father. Watch from here."

Before Wu-Wen could object, Li-Wen reached the heavy iron-studded gates and pulled them wide open.

Outside, nearly thirty mercenaries clad in spiked leather armor were arrayed across the cobblestone street. At their center stood Boss Bear, a massive mountain of a man wielding a two-handed iron mace wrapped in the violent grey aura of a Fifth-Stage Ki-Refine cultivator. Beside him, Gu-Tao pointed a trembling finger toward the estate, his wrist wrapped in blood-soaked bandages.

"There he is, Boss!" Gu-Tao shouted nervously. "That's the brat!"

Boss Bear sneered, slamming his heavy mace onto the stone steps, cracking the granite beneath. "You finally showed your face, cripple! Hand over fifty gold taels, bow down three times, and break your own right arm right now, or I will slaughter everyone inside this estate!"

Li-Wen stood on the top step, his hands loosely folded behind his back. His golden-tinged eyes swept over the armed thugs with the cold indifference of an immortal looking at ants underfoot.

"Fifty gold taels?" Li-Wen said smoothly, his quiet voice echoing clearly through the street. "You brought thirty men to my doorstep just to demand pocket change and bargain for your own lives?"

Boss Bear's face flushed red with sudden, violent rage. "Arrogant little bastard! I'll tear your head off!"

With a roar, Boss Bear lunged forward, jumping high into the air. His Fifth-Stage Ki surged into his iron mace as he brought it down in a terrifying overhead strike intended to smash Li-Wen into bloody rain.

The wind howled from the sheer weight of the descending weapon. To the watching mercenaries, the strike was unstoppable.

Li-Wen didn't dodge. He didn't even channel Ki into a defensive stance.

As the shadow of the massive iron head fell over his face, Li-Wen simply stepped forward with his left foot and raised his bare right hand to catch it mid-air.

CLANG!

An explosive shockwave burst outward, shattering the stone tiles beneath Li-Wen's boots and blowing back the dust. The mercenaries began to cheer, assuming the boy had been flattened—until the dust cleared, revealing a scene that froze the blood in their veins.

Li-Wen was standing completely upright. His fingers were wrapped firmly around the solid iron head of the mace. His hand hadn't trembled an inch. He had stopped a full-power strike from a Fifth-Stage expert using nothing but his bare physical strength!

"W-What?!" Boss Bear gasped in terror, his arms bulging as he tried desperately to push the mace down, then pull it back. But Li-Wen's grip was like an immovable divine mountain.

"Is this all the strength a Fifth-Stage thug can muster?" Li-Wen said softly.

Li-Wen closed his fingers into a fist.

CRACK!

Under the crushing force of the Celestial Rune carved into Li-Wen's spine, the high-grade iron mace fractured like brittle glass, exploding into dozens of jagged metal shards that rained onto the ground.

Before Boss Bear could comprehend what had happened, Li-Wen's right hand shot forward like lightning. Two rigid fingers struck directly into the center of Boss Bear's chest—the Primary Dantian Gate.

Puk!

Boss Bear froze in mid-air. The violent Ki flowing through his veins reversed instantaneously, ripping through his internal organs like razor blades. Blood burst from his mouth, and his massive body crashed onto the stone steps with a heavy, lifeless thud.

Dead in a single casual strike.

Suffocating silence fell over the street. The remaining mercenaries stood paralyzed, their weapons trembling in their hands as they looked from their dead leader to the calm youth casually wiping a speck of dust from his sleeve.

"Leave your gold pouches on the steps and scatter," Li-Wen said, without glancing up. "Anyone still here in three breaths will join him."

Clang! Clang! Clang!

Dozens of swords and coin pouches hit the ground simultaneously. Screaming in utter panic, the mercenaries trampled over each other as they fled down the alleyways, leaving behind Boss Bear's corpse and thirty pouches of gold.

An hour later, inside the grand Elder Hall of the Wu Estate, a tense confrontation was under way.

Sitting at the head of the elder table was Wu-Guang, the Second Elder of the Wu clan—a cultivator at the peak of the Sixth Stage of Ki-Refine. Beside him sat his eldest son, Wu-Tian, whose right arm was wrapped tightly in thick linen, his face pale with burning hatred.

"Clan Head Wu-Wen!" Second Elder Wu-Guang slammed his fist onto the table, shattering a wooden teacup. "Your useless son used dirty, underhanded poison to paralyze my son Tian's arm yesterday! And now he has provoked the Black Bear Gang outside! His recklessness will bring total destruction upon our clan!"

Wu-Wen sat calmly at the primary chair, sipping his tea without flinching. "Second Elder, you were the one demanding my resignation yesterday claiming I couldn't handle the gang. Why are you trembling now?"

"You—!" Wu-Guang snarled, his Ki flaring dangerously. "The Elder Council officially demands that you hand over your son for punishment today, or we will strip you of your title right now!"

"Strip who of their title?"

A tranquil, cold voice echoed from the doorway.

The heavy wooden doors swung open, and Li-Wen walked smoothly into the hall. He carried a heavy leather sack in his hand, which he casually tossed onto the center of the grand conference table.

The sack burst open, spilling gold coins and silver taels across the polished wood—along with Boss Bear's bloody iron chest plate.

The elders gasped, springing up from their seats in shock.

"Li-Wen! How dare you barge into the Elder Hall!" Wu-Guang roared, though his eyes widened at the blood-stained armor on the table. "What is the meaning of this?!"

"I just collected the debt from the Black Bear Gang," Li-Wen said casually, resting his hand on his father's chair. "Boss Bear is dead outside the gate. His men have dissolved the gang and fled Azure Mist City. Your excuse to strip my father's title is gone, Second Elder."

The entire hall fell dead silent. A family guard rushed into the room seconds later, bowing frantically. "Report to Clan Head! Boss Bear has been slain at the front gate with one hit! The gang has completely surrendered!"

Wu-Guang stood frozen, his face turning from furious red to a sickly pale white. He stared at Li-Wen as if looking at a monster. A boy who was considered a crippled waste just yesterday had obliterated a Fifth-Stage leader in a single morning?

Li-Wen took a slow step toward Wu-Guang, his golden-tinged eyes locking onto the older man's shaking frame.

"You relied on outside thugs to pressure my father," Li-Wen said quietly, his voice carrying an immense, pressure-filled weight. "Now that your dogs are dead, do you wish to challenge the Clan Head yourself?"

Wu-Guang gritted his teeth, forcing his Sixth-Stage Ki to flare up to hide his fear. "Don't act grand, brat! You merely used some unknown magical talisman to cheat! In three weeks, during the official Family Assessment, my son Wu-Tian will face you on the martial stage in front of the whole clan! You won't be able to cheat then!"

Li-Wen let out a soft, mocking chuckle that sent a cold shiver down the spines of everyone in the room.

"Three weeks?" Li-Wen said, turning toward the door with a casual wave of his sleeve. "Tell your son to heal his arm quickly then. In three weeks, I will show this entire clan what true power looks like.
