Chapter 13 - Amber's guess

Corridor Collapse

The corridor was quiet, cold, and too bright.

Amber's expression hardened again as she folded her arms.

Amber:

"What if you… weren't there for him?" 😐

Jonathan frowned, defensive instantly.

Jonathan:

"What the hell are you saying? I was—" 😤

Amber cut him off sharply.

Amber:

"No. Listen properly."

Her voice dropped into something darker.

"I mean… what if you were not alive at that time?" 😑

Jonathan froze.

A chill ran through him.

Jonathan:

"I… what do you mean…?" 😶

Amber exhaled, as if preparing herself to say something heavy.

Amber:

"If my guess is right… Justin died young in his previous life."

Her tone was calm—too calm for the storm she was unleashing.

"And if you weren't alive… everything falls into place."

Jonathan's breath hitched.

Amber continued, her eyes staring into distance—

as if she was replaying a tragedy only she could see.

Amber:

"If you were gone, then the first person who would've taken the blame… is your mother.

And knowing myself…" her voice lowered,

"I would've killed Mrs. Kim."

Jonathan's eyes widened in horror.

Amber kept talking.

Amber:

"Your father loved her more than his own life. If she died… he would've followed her.

Without your parents, you would've been broken…

and you would've killed me for revenge."

Her eyes trembled for a brief second.

Amber:

"And when you realized you can't live without me…

you would've taken your own life too."

Jonathan felt the blood drain from his face.

Amber kept going—like she had already accepted this alternate, brutal reality.

Amber:

"Your brothers… without you… they would've split.

The Devis family would've shattered.

Justin would've been alone.

And with the enemies you made…"

she clenched her jaw,

"…they would have killed him."

A suffocating silence swallowed the corridor.

Amber turned her head slowly and looked directly at Jonathan.

Her eyes were calm, but terrifyingly sharp.

Amber:

"So tell me, Jonathan."

Her voice echoed.

"Doesn't it make sense?" 😑

Jonathan stared at her—

then everything around him tilted.

The world blurred.

His chest tightened.

His throat closed.

He couldn't breathe.

Justin…

His son—

Alone.

Dying.

Repeating the cycle.

And none of them there to protect him.

Jonathan's knees buckled.

Jonathan:

"…Amber… stop…"

But he didn't finish.

His vision went completely white—

and he collapsed.

Jonathan: 😵 (fainted)

Amber blinked.

Amber:

"…What the—" 😑

(Who faints at a hypothesis?!)

She crouched down immediately, tapping his cheek.

Amber:

"Jonathan. Hey. Idiot. Wake up." 😐

But Jonathan was gone—

not dead, but completely overwhelmed.

Because even if it was only a guess…

No father could bear the thought

that their child once lived a life filled with brutality, loneliness, and death.

Even a guess was too much.

Amber sighed deeply, pressing two fingers to her temple.

Amber:

"…This is going to be harder than I thought." 😔
