Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Brother-in-Law

Kai's POV

"What did you say?" Ezra looked so shocked, looking at me after he choked on his juice. We just finish our lunch, and I told him about Zane and Kei's upcoming wedding.

I lazily rested my back on the chair after I sipped on my juice. "Next year, Ezra. I don't know the exact date, but I know nothing's stopping it."

He palmed his forehead. "You're doomed!"

My forehead creased. "Why would I be? I'm over him." Lies… Why do I keep spouting lies these days?

"I'm talking about your secret, Kai. He knows that you're a closeted gay."

I was taken aback after a realization hit me. Right! Zane knows that I'm a closeted gay, and there's a big possibility that he'll tell my family about it.

Fear suddenly consumed me. The thought of my father's spiteful stares, my sister's disgust look—their anger…it scares me.

"I think you should try to get along with him, Kai." Ezra suggested. "If you're nor ready to expose your real gender preference, you should get along with him. We both know that he's a heartless man. He might expose you to your family."

I exhaled. "But I just had an argument with him."

His eyes widened. "What?"

"I just can't stand him, Ezra. He's so arrogant. He's full of himself."

Ezra looked at me worriedly. "Why? Did he do something?"

I swallowed hard. "He's…he's saying things about me being still not over him."

"Are you?"

I stared at him, horrified. "No!"

His eyes squinted. I can tell that he doesn't believe me.

"Are you like that because…you still have feelings for him?"

"What? Stop it, Ezra. No!"

"Do you still like him, Kai? Do you like your brother-in-law?"

My conversation with Ezra clouded my mind until I'm back in my office. I couldn't answer Ezra earlier, and it bothered me.

Do I really have to get along with him, so he would keep my secret? But does it guarantee that he won't expose me?

"Damn! This is hard!" I whispered, and buried my face on my table.

"What is hard?"

I immediately sat straight, and cleared my throat. Kei entered my office—eyes roaming around as she nods with a satisfaction on her face. "Very neat. So you."

"Do you need something, Kei? Perhaps a car?"

She smiled, and sat on the chair in front of my table. "I just wanna see your office. I had lunch with Zane. I like the office you gave him."

"It was my previous office. Smaller, but good enough."

She chuckled. "It's a huge office, Kai. Thank you."

I stared at her. "I know you want to say something more, Kei. Tell me…"

I rested my back on the swivel chair, looking at her curiously.

She puckered her lips. "I just want to ask for a favor."

"Shoot." I grabbed the file I need to review, and opened the folder.

"Can you look after Zane for me?"

My eyes stopped scanning the pages before I lifted my face to look at her. "Kei, your fiancee is an adult."

"I know…" She frowned. "I just…you know that I'm a bit of jealous. There are always women flocking around him when we're in the U.S."

I sighed. "Kei, if he's owned by you, he would crawl back to you even with thousands of women flocking around him. He won't look at other women if he doesn't want to."

She groaned. "Ih! Please, Kai? Please? I know that, but you know how other women are. Just until we get married, please?"

My forehead creased. "Why do I have to look after him, by the way? You're also here."

She bit her bottom lip. "That's the problem, Kai. I have a case."

"So?"

"You don't understand. It's not an easy case, and I will be very busy starting tomorrow."

My brow shot up. "Aren't you here to take a vacation?"

"Originally, but dad asked for my favor. You know I can't say no to that old man—not like I have a choice."

"Fine." I exhaled violently. "It's not like I have a choice either."

She went to my side happily, and hugged me. "Thank you! Thank you, little brother. I promise I'll set you up with a great woman soon. I know someone."

Think about it gives me goosebumps. I shook my head. "Nevermind, Kei. I'll find my own person soon."

"You would like her. Gotta go. Bye!"

I just shook my head when Kei exited my office just like that. I massaged my temple, and shook my head. How would I look after him when I can't even breathe properly when he's around? We don't even get along.

I shrugged the thought off of my head, and continued working. I was already drowned in paperwork when I heard the door swung open.

"Melissa, I'm busy. I won't accept visitors if you're here for that."

I didn't hear a reply—which is very unusual of Melissa, so I lifted my face—only to get shocked when I came face to face with Zane. He was standing in front of me—towering me with intense gaze.

"What are you doing here?"

He pressed his palms on my table–eyes fixed on mine. "I need things in my office."

I inhaled sharply. "Melissa will handle it—"

He snatched my pen, and it's not what stopped me, it's the fact that his fingers touched my hand, and I felt a strong surge of electricity in my body.

My spacious office suddenly felt narrow as he looked down at me with an unkind expression. Brows meeting at the center, eyes so sharp and cold, lips pressed into a grim line, and a clenched jaw that's so sharp. A god-like but an attitude like that of a devil. And yet I felt thrilled.

What is wrong with me?

"If you want peace, stop being a bitch to me. I can crash you into pulp in your own territory, Montclair."

I balled my fists. "Are you threatening me?"

"No. I'm giving you a chance. Let's live our lives peacefully… Like real brothers-in-law."
