Chapter 2 - Unfamiliar Faces

TRIGGER WARNING - SUICIDE

Ok, this DEFINITELY wasn't his body.

After looking in the mirror, he was met with a face that was not his own, one that even years of being in a coma couldn't change.

Gone was his wonderful dirty-blonde hair, his dark eyes, his tan skin, and in place was a dark head of hair, long and messy with bedhead, a pale color of skin as if he staying inside every day of his life, and striking green eyes with color as deep as emeralds, easily the most noticeable feature of his.

His other facial features were a bit better than average, and if he was being completely honest with himself… they were better than before he woke up.

'See, if I didn't know any better, I would swear I was reincarnated like one of my novels. But like… that's impossible. That type of stuff doesn't exist… right?'

He actually hoped it did. The life he was in before didn't have any major problems, he just felt like he wasn't actually going anywhere, running in place and never reaching full potential. He didn't have a good job, a great relationship, or a lot of connections. He had a job that made him enough to get by, a one bedroom apartment, and a dream of being something more.

He did have one friend, Cameron, the one who was there when no one else was. Cameron picked him up when he was at his lowest, and from then on, Kai swore to pay him back.

That was why he had jumped in front of the car without a second thought. A life for a life; a fair trade in Kai's eyes.

But other than Cameron, there was not much tying him down. He was an only child, and due to years of abuse he had stopped contacting his parents 3 years ago when he turned 18 and moved out of his parents place.

He was very curious to see how Cameron was doing, but first he had to figure out exactly where he was. And he also finally remembered the existence of whatever was on that metal tray that was calling out to his stomach.

He went out of the bathroom and walked to the food, having to catch his breath at this point from all of the walking around.

Holy hells his body sucked. He barely walked 20 feet and already had to catch his breath. First order of business once he gets his bearings is going to be weight training. This is already driving him crazy.

He sat down in front of the tray, using the small table the tray was on as support. After sitting down, he opened the tray to be met with a dish he had never seen before, but also looked oddly familiar. He would've sworn it was chicken noodle soup, but the noodles looked… off, different. The vegetables in the soup weren't any vegetables that he could name as well. But the overall color was the same, the smell was the same, and the taste?

The taste was the same, if not better than regular chicken noodle soup. Just… different. Unique in a strange way.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, talks like a duck… then he was probably reincarnated.

He sat with that thought while slurping down the soup, letting it all sink in.

'I really don't think I'm going to be seeing Cameron anytime soon.' The thought made him frown. It took him a while to let down his walls for Cameron, and he didn't want to go through the same process again.

As if to shake him out of his reverie, the two large wooden doors that he had somehow failed to notice in his first glance about the room banged upon, with surprisingly little sound for how fast they moved.

Silhouetted by the door was a young woman, looked to be in her early 20s, with short red hair in a pixie style cut. She could be described as being classically beautiful, though the large scowl on her face did mar that somewhat.

"Ohhhhh Dorian!" The woman somehow managed to sound cherry, though there was a faint hint of disgust that was hard to hide in her tone. "It's almost time! If you can't manage to learn a single spell by the end of the month, Dad is gonna kick you out!:

'What? Spell? And who the heck is Dorian? Is that my name?'

The woman looked a little pleased with herself for saying all of that, and her large scowl lessened slightly. She then continued; "You know, my father gave your family plenty of chances. And now that your father passed away on the battlefield, the benefits that you were offering my family have disappeared as well. And yet, my father was still generous. He is willing to accept you and your mother into his family, and to accept you, all you have to do is learn a single set of spells. That's it. And yet… you can't even learn a single one."

Her frown has turned into a full on smile at this point.

'It seems she gains quite a bit of enjoyment from tormenting this Dorian here, yet she also seems to be telling me quite a bit of information about this world as well. Well, one knows when to remain quiet…'

She then spat out, "How gods damned useless could someone even be that they can't even learn one single spell? Jesus, maybe you should just kill yourself already."

Those last words of hers seemed practiced, as if she had been ending most of her conversations with those words, you should just kill yourself already. And with that, Kai was able to piece a few more things together.

He knew depression. And he knew how cutting words can be, especially ones that have been sharpened into the deadliest blade.

He guessed what happened to this person before, 'It looks like this body's soul, I guess you can call it, gave up. There are no scars or open wounds, so I don't think I cut myself. I didn't feel sick or anything upon waking up, so I don't think I poisoned myself. I think this body quite literally gave up and died… and then I came.'

He was able to relate to this soul a bit too much. Growing up, his parents abused him constantly, to the point where he was in the same headspace as that poor soul quite often. But due to talking to a therapist and meds, he was able to make it through those times. It looks like those advancements in medical science still have yet to happen here.

The young woman, happy with herself and seeming to have broken out of her bad mood from before, finally looked around the room, before ending on him sitting on the ground, eating the soup from the tray.

Her jaw immediately dropped to the ground.

"What- how-" Her voice spluttered, unable to form a full sentence.

'Is eating food require more customs here? What did I do wrong?' Even though he was thinking that, it didn't stop him from finishing the rest of the soup; his body needed the energy, and nothing else was giving it to him.

He blinked at her very innocently, wide eyed, soup bowl covering most of his bottom face.

"You're out of bed? You're MOVING?! YOU'RE EATING?!!" Each line was said louder and louder, with the last line starting to make liquids nearby vibrate slightly.

He didn't know if he should respond, but he wanted to say something back to her at this point, so he put down the soup bowl and just responded with a, "Yes?"

The moment he said something, her body seemed to get a shock.

"And- and you can- and you can talk?" She whispered out, looking now slightly afraid of that fact.

"Yes?" He responded again, looking quite confused now. He didn't seem to have any true difficulties preventing him from moving or talking, so it was quite confusing to get this much surprise from this woman.

It was at this point that memories started to slowly unlock in his mind, allowing him to learn more about exactly who this body was.
