Chapter 2 - Something Else

June 3rd, 2030 8:00 P.M.

Right in front of her was the towering hospital building, its luminescent red cross glowing at the very top, windows stretching from the top of the building to the very bottom. "My only hope," was all she thought to herself. Awkwardly, she stumbled and got closer and closer. She entered. Silence. Like a flash, everything went dark. Zzzt... zzzt… the lights flickered on, and in front of her lay multiple bodies, some on top of each other, others missing chunks and parts. "Ahhhhh!" she screamed in fear as she stumbled back. She raised her hands shakily to cover her eyes, but unbeknownst to her, they were drenched. Drip… drip… drip… The blood of the people around her covered her almost from head to toe. It reeked of iron, and the taste of iron coated her mouth. Panicked and not understanding what was going on, she frantically ran out of the building, each footstep leaving a bloody print.

Vivienne ran to the back of the hospital; there lay a vast forest. Pine trees so tall and full of leaves that one could easily get lost within seconds. In the forest, she ran and ran. Crunch... crunch. Her footsteps crumbled the dried grass and leaves below her feet. Shff... shff… She ran through bushes and branches, thorns sticking to her and dirt covering her. The sun was falling, and the moon began to rise. Like an animal, she instinctively sought a form of shelter, a cave, somewhere dark and secluded that she could call home.

Heavy pants could be heard from Vivienne having run for what felt like an eternity to her, she was tired and exhausted, legs shaking a bit at the brink of giving out. The craving for blood came back to her, but relief washed that craving away as she found a cool, shallow cavern. Shhh... haaa... She took a breath. She lay on the ground, nearly passing out from how tired she was, but the craving for blood wouldn't go away. "W-What's happening to me!?" Vivienne questioned, her voice torn from panic and exhaustion. She reached into her pocket to take her phone out, but nothing. Her only means to communicate with Mrs. Carmichael was now gone, and her way home was now further than it's ever been. "Why is this happening to me?" she sobbed to herself, not understanding any of the current situation.

A few hours had now passed, and she lay asleep in the cavern, her body morphing during her sleep. Skrrrch. Her nails began to grow, not too long but sharp. Her eyes, although closed, gave off a red shine through a small sliver. Her skin was becoming paler than before, now as white as snow, just like the day she was found. Her hair grew longer, her overall stature increasing. It was like witnessing evolution right there. She clearly wasn't human, but what was she?

Days had passed, Vivienne now getting used to living in the cavern. She had noticed her changes, and along with them, the ability to see in the dark was now hers. "I have to go home, but would she see me differently? Would she accept me?" she thought to herself. The changes she had gone through were not ordinary, and she knew that. She had started to understand she was not human but refused to fully accept it. "Some sort of blood fiend… but how? How? When?" she spoke to herself, desperately wanting an answer. She walked in circles and pondered what to do next. She wanted to get out of this cavern but was also afraid to return home. She knew that she was likely the one who caused all of those bodies at the hospital, and because of that, she was now wary of herself. What if she ended up hurting more people? She might even be wanted by now. "Then again, I can't stay here forever, it's not like I'm the only non-human anyway."

Now outside of the cavern, a ray of the moon's light shone over her. She looked more mystical than she could ever have imagined. Her hair almost reached the floor, and her skin almost reflected the light. Fwoooo. The wind blew against her. She opened her eyes to look around, the vibrant red of her eyes giving off a slight radiance. "Home, that's where I'm going." She walked off, then began to speed up. She leapt, but to her surprise, she stayed airborne. "I CAN FLY!?!?" she exclaimed. "WOOOO!" She began to fly in circles, finding something exciting amidst everything that had been happening. She was filled with a slight joy that she had not felt in a while, but she knew nothing was going her way. "I can get home so much faster like this now!" she thought to herself, but she understood that flying in the sky and being caught could be a problem. It conflicted within her—on one hand, she wanted to get home safely, but on the other, she was unsure of what might happen. She sighed. "I guess this can wait for later," she said as she began to descend.

She was near her home. She felt little to no exhaustion from this long walk, perhaps thanks to being a blood fiend. "A bit longer and I'll be home," she whispered, not wanting to make her presence widely known. As she got closer, anxiety struck her. She did not know how the person she saw as her mother would treat her—perhaps differently, or maybe not. She finally arrived. Her home. The one place she felt safe. She walked up to the door. Knock… knock... knock... Radio silence. She knocked again, this time a bit louder. Knock… knock... knock... Once again, nothing. Now worried, she tried to look through the window. Although dark, with the only light source being a small lamp, her ability to see in the dark helped her. But she saw nothing. Except a figure—the shadow of a tall man and fear—was the only emotion she could feel.
