Chapter 311 - Looking For An Answer 2

The Emirates Stadium felt different today.

Unusually so.

As Arsenal supporters filed into the ground, most of them wore tense, distracted expressions. The familiar buzz, the easy laughter, the casual chants—it was all missing.

A few fans tried to lift the mood, shouting and clapping as they normally would, but the response was scattered at best. Most people weren't really here for the football. Their eyes kept drifting toward the pitch, searching, waiting.

The reason was obvious.

The 100 million pounds transfer fee story had shaken the fanbase to its core.

Arsenal supporters had become fragile over the years.

Ever since Fabregas set an uncomfortable precedent, Van Persie's departure had made things worse. More recently, Vermaelen had left as well, although it was on good terms.

Even though his exit was quietly accepted by both club and fans, it still fed the same narrative—Arsenal selling their captain.

Three captains gone in a short span of time.

No one could say for sure that Kai wouldn't become the fourth.

Faced with a staggering transfer fee and an equally tempting salary package, how many players could truly resist?

Fans wanted loyalty.

But they also understood reality.

Football was a profession, and money talked.

They didn't want Kai to be that kind of captain—but they couldn't guarantee he wouldn't be.

What unsettled them most was the silence.

The club hadn't offered a clear explanation. Attempts to calm the situation felt vague, almost evasive.

So, by an unspoken agreement, the fans came to the Emirates today.

They hoped that here—on this pitch—both the club and Kai would finally give them an answer.

As a result, the usually electric stadium felt eerily calm.

In the East Stand, the most loyal supporters sat stiffly, brows furrowed, eyes fixed on a single figure warming up on the pitch.

The quiet was uncomfortable.

Even Sky Sports' lead commentator, Rob Hawthorne, sounded more subdued than usual.

"The atmosphere here is… restrained," He said carefully. "You can feel the tension in the stands."

Alongside him, Davie Provan hummed in agreement. "It's not the Emirates we're used to, Rob. The fans are anxious—and understandably so."

Rob had been informed by the club before kickoff: no questions, no speculation about Kai's future.

If not for that instruction, he would have asked the question everyone was thinking.

What is really going on?

In the South Stand, a banner slowly rose.

It wasn't enormous, but it was impossible to miss.

Kai! Promise us, stay!

Rob pretended not to see it, smoothly shifting his tone as the warm-up concluded.

"And the players are finishing their preparations," he said. "Kickoff approaching shortly."

. . .

In the dressing room, Kai let out a quiet sigh.

"This atmosphere…" he muttered. "Why don't we just hold a press conference and clear everything up?"

Pat Rice shook his head. "It's not that simple. There are still details to sort out. A press conference right now could create more problems than it solves."

Kai nodded. "Fair enough."

He changed into his match kit and sat down to pull on his boots. Just as he did, Pat returned, holding a neatly folded white undershirt.

"Got something for you," Pat said.

Kai took it, unfolding the fabric.

Printed clearly across the front were two words:

Answer: Staying!

He looked up. "This is from the club?"

Pat nodded. "Yes. You tell the fans on the pitch. We'll announce the renewal immediately after. Just one thing—no media contact."

"I understand," Kai replied.

Without hesitation, he took off his jersey again and pulled the undershirt on beneath it.

Moments later, the tunnel filled with movement as both teams lined up.

When Kai led Arsenal out onto the pitch, the stadium finally exploded.

"Stay, Kai!"

"You're our captain! You won't leave, right?!"

"Kai! This is your home!"

"We love you—don't go!"

The chants weren't angry. They weren't demanding.

They were pleading.

Season after season, the fans had grown used to their young captain.

He brought energy.

He brought belief.

He brought trophies.

In three seasons, Kai had delivered both an FA Cup and a Premier League title.

Arsenal without him felt unthinkable.

As the teams took their positions, the camera briefly cut to Leicester's midfield, where N'Golo Kanté jogged into place, smiling as always.

Earlier in the tunnel, he had spoken to a teammate in his usual broken, cheerful English.

"Today we run a lot, yes?" Kanté had said. "Ball come, I take. Simple football."

Back on the pitch, the roar of the Emirates swelled once more.

Both teams moved into their respective halves.

The coin toss and handshake rituals were completed.

Standing there, Kai felt a mix of pride and emotion wash over him.

Three years ago, he could never have imagined that one day he would carry this much weight for the club.

Cazorla turned back toward Kai, raised a hand, patted his chest, and grinned.

"Captain, I'll score one for you."

"You'd better," Kai replied dryly. "Otherwise, you won't even get the chance to celebrate by taking your shirt off."

Cazorla laughed.

"That'd be awkward, wouldn't it?"

Someone else chipped in, laughing,

"Hey, if anyone looks awkward, it's the cap. What's that got to do with us?"

The players burst into laughter, the tension easing.

They already knew about Kai's renewal.

And more importantly, they finally understood what Kai truly meant to Arsenal.

When news broke that Chelsea were prepared to trigger a £100 million release clause, some of them had quietly started thinking about their own futures.

That was the reality of football.

But the reason Arsenal still stood united now was largely because of Kai.

He carried not only the club's expectations, but the players' ambitions as well.

As long as Kai remained at Arsenal, this team believed it could keep moving forward.

"Alright," Kai said firmly, clapping his hands. "Kick-off's coming. Let's play a proper game."

The Arsenal players responded in unison and turned to face their opponents.

Around the world, cameras captured the moment.

On Sky Sports, Rob Hawthorne's voice rang out.

"Just look at Arsenal," he said. "This doesn't look like a club in turmoil at all. They're together, focused, and confident."

But based on Rob Hawthorne's understanding, Kai was not someone driven purely by money.

No one disliked money.

But for Kai, some things mattered more.

The composure exhibited by the players comforted many Arsenal supporters.

And yet, anxiety still lingered in the stands.

But until the transfer window closed, doubt remained.

Why wasn't the window over yet?

A heavy, expectant atmosphere hung over the stadium.

And within that tension, the match kicked off.

Leicester City (4-4-2):

Goalkeeper: Schmeichel

Defenders: De Laet, Morgan, Liam Moore, Konchesky

Midfielders: Mahrez, Hammond, Andy King, Schlupp

Forwards: Ulloa, Nugent

Arsenal (4-2-3-1):

Goalkeeper: Navas

Defenders: Sagna, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs

Def. Midfielders: N'Golo Kanté, Kai

Midfielders: Di María, Cazorla, Sanchez

Forward: Suárez

Leicester, playing away from home, set up with stability in mind, looking to strike on the counter.

Their right side—Mahrez working with De Laet—was clearly their main outlet.

Arsenal, by contrast, focused on control through the middle.

This match also marked N'Golo Kanté's first start of the season.

His role was clear: cover the space Kai usually occupied.

Which meant Kai had more freedom to push forward.

From the touchline, Arsène Wenger watched closely.

After Kanté's consistently impressive performances, the idea had become impossible to ignore.

Wenger wanted Kanté to grow—quickly—and stand on his own in midfield.

Even if Kai stayed higher up the pitch, Kanté would be trusted to hold the defensive line alone.

As for the pairing itself, Pat Rice once summed it up perfectly:

"When you finally buy a f**king one mountain, you look up and realise there are even more mountains to buy and to f**k everyone up."

And for the opposition, those mountains wore red and white.
