They walked back into the mansion, the halls echoing faintly with their footsteps. As they moved through the dim corridor, Rhaegal recounted all that had taken place during their journey. He spoke plainly, without bitterness, though each word felt heavy with the weight of inevitability.
By the time he finished, Alfred could hardly find his voice.
"So… the royal guards will come for you within hours?" he asked quietly.
Rhaegal gave a single nod.
"I am sorry things turned out like this, my lord. Is there any way I can help?" Alfred's voice held both guilt and loyalty.
"Protect Malin while I am away," Rhaegal said. His tone softened when he spoke the boy's name, as though it carried a part of himself.
Alfred nodded without hesitation. Rhaegal gave him a few more instructions, careful and precise, ensuring the household would remain in order. When all was said, Alfred bowed and left to carry out his lord's wishes.
