Malin stood by the window, staring out through the glass as snow fell heavily over the grounds. His eyes searched the darkness below, watching for any movement. It was well past midnight, and Lord Rhaegal still hadn't returned.
Worry slowly crept in, settling deeper the longer he waited.
He didn't know where Lord Rhaegal had gone. In truth, Malin realized he never really did. The lord only ever told him what was necessary, no more, no less. He had said this trip was to escort the princess, but Malin had sensed it from the start… there was more to it. Something hidden.
Lord Rhaegal was likely out carrying out one of the king's secret tasks. Malin didn't like it, but there was nothing he could do about it.
He knew Rhaegal could take care of himself. The man was powerful, skilled, impossible to read but still, Malin couldn't shake the worry gnawing at him.
