Chapter 752 - Chapter 577

The ledge is a wound in the mountain's flesh.

Micah presses his spine against the wall, arms spread wide, fingers splayed against wet stone that sweats cold moisture through his gloves. The Silver Ledge earns its name—a ribbon of rock no wider than his hand, slick with mercurial frost that clings to the surface like the breath of something long dead. It carves across an infinite vertical face, a scar in the throat of the Kunaishi Shrine that drops into nothing and rises into nothing.

The abyss below him churns.

Water crashes somewhere in the depths, the sound rolling upward in waves—boom, hiss, boom—like the heartbeat of a sleeping leviathan. The noise bounces off unseen walls, echoes twisting through the mist that rises in slow, hungry coils. The mist carries a taste: copper and salt and something older, something that coats his tongue with the flavor of rusted iron. It smells of deep places. Of things that have never seen the sun.

Micah shuffles forward. His boot dislodges a pebble. It falls.

The echo takes a long time to die.

He counts the seconds as it bounces—one, two, three, four—each impact a sharp crack against unseen stone. Then a pause. Then a splash. The sound is impossibly distant, impossibly deep, swallowed by waters that churn in darkness absolute.

Micah's throat tightens. He swallows hard, trying to clear his mind of everything except the next step. The next breath. The next inch of stone beneath his feet.

You are doing so well.

Thye's voice curls through his skull, warm and patient and hungry.

So close now. I can feel the Axis Mundi. It sings for us.

He takes another step. The wall beside him weeps moisture that soaks through his waistcoat, chilling his skin. His fingers find a crack in the stone and he grips it, knuckles whitening, as he edges forward.

A shape materializes in front of him.

Mihawk leans against the wall, arms crossed, his golden-ringed eyes half-lidded with something that might be boredom or might be contempt. His long black coat hangs motionless despite the wind that howls through the shaft. His hat casts shadows across features that Micah knows better than his own—the sharp cheekbones, the pointed beard, the mouth that has never once curved into a smile for him.

"Father?"

The word escapes before Micah can stop it. His voice sounds small. Childish.

Mihawk raises one brow. The gesture is slow, deliberate, the same expression he wears when assessing an opponent who has already lost.

"Marya would not hesitate." His voice is flat, disinterested, a blade drawn across stone. "She would have already found the Axis Mundi."

Micah's jaw clenches. He pushes forward, but the image does not move. Does not flicker. Does not fade. It stands between him and the path ahead, immovable as the mountain itself.

"That is why I left you behind." Mihawk's eyes narrow, gold rings catching the distant glow of something below. "You were never—"

"Shut up!"

The words tear from Micah's throat. His foot slips on frost-slick stone. His shoulder slams against the wall, and for one terrible moment, his weight shifts—too far, too fast—and he scrambles, nails scraping rock, breath catching in his chest.

Mihawk watches. Unmoving.

"Your sister would not lose her focus like this."

Rage floods through Micah's veins, hot and blinding. He lunges—not at the path, not at safety, but at the image, at the sneer, at the years of silence and the weight of a name he never asked to carry.

"SHUT UP!"

His hands pass through empty air.

His feet find nothing.

The world tilts. Stone scrapes his palms. His body swings out over the void, legs kicking against nothing, and then he is hanging—fingers clawing at the ledge, arms screaming, the abyss yawning beneath him like an open mouth.

The mist rises. It curls around his legs, cold and wet and hungry.

He was never worthy of you.

Thye's voice slides into his thoughts, smooth as oil on water.

You are so much more than he could ever be.

Micah's fingers slip. His grip falters. The abyss pulls at him, patient and certain.

Then a face peers over the ledge.

Silver eyes. Long black hair that falls like a curtain around features that are sharp and soft all at once. A mouth that curves into something that is not quite a smile but is not quite anything else either.

"Mother?"

The word is a breath. A prayer. A wound reopened.

Elisabeta Vaccaria looks down at him, and her eyes—those impossible silver eyes that see through everything—hold him steady.

"You have to pull yourself up."

Micah blinks. His arms tremble. His fingers bleed against stone. The mist coils tighter, and somewhere far below, the water crashes and churns.

"I—"

"Come." She waves him forward, a gesture as natural as breathing. "Come now."

She cannot save you.

Thye's voice sharpens, edges fraying into something that might be fear.

She will only hold you back.

Micah grits his teeth. His muscles bunch. His arms burn. He pulls—one hand, then the other—finding purchase on the ledge, dragging himself up until his chest clears the stone, until his knees find solid ground, until he is kneeling on the Silver Ledge with his mother's image standing before him.

She is shorter than he remembers. Or perhaps he is taller. He blinks, looking down at her, and something in his chest cracks.

"You are taller." Elisabeta smiles. "You look like your father."

Micah stiffens. His eyes narrow.

Elisabeta giggles—a sound he has not heard in years, a sound he had forgotten he remembered. "You scowl like him too."

"You are not real."
