Chapter 2 - The Flashback

The next day, when I was working on some important files in my office, I heard a knock at the door. The mafia barged in.

"Mr. Jake, welcome."

"Good evening, Miss Jenny."

"Hope you are working on the project," he said while sitting across the table.

"Yes, sir. The paperwork is almost done. You will receive all the important files by tomorrow."

"Hmm," he hummed in agreement and picked up a random file from my table, and started to make amendments to it.

"Here, this should be the design of our new product."

I took the file from his hand and saw what he had made. My breath hitched at the sight of his design.

"Oh my God, this looks amazing."

"I know," he said with confidence.

I glanced at him, sceptical, but damn... it was astonishing.

"What's with this expression?" he said coldly.

"Huh? No, nothing," I said, clearing my throat.

"Sir, you should check our new collection we are launching this month," I stood up and moved towards the drawer on the left of the office.

Then suddenly, I stopped, my head throbbed with pain, and my heartbeat quickened.

"Ouch," I said, holding my head.

"What's wrong, Jenny?" he said, clearly concerned.

I closed my eyes. Some strange, vivid memories flashed in front of my eyes. It was almost hitting like a bolt. What was it?

Flashback

"Hey, return my damn phone, rn." I laughed, reaching for it.

"Catch me if you can," he teased, raising his hand even more. His face blurred.

"Ahha, gotcha," I said, climbing on the couch.

And then it all disappeared.

To the present:

I sat on the chair.

"What was that?"

"What happened, Miss Jenny?"

I came back to my senses as I heard the mafia boss. I brushed the strange feeling off.

"Nothing, sir. I'm fine."

"Here, drink this," he said, offering me water.

I took the glass from his hand.

"Thanks."

"I'll call the doc," he said with concern.

"No, I'm fine."

"You sure?" He said, raising his eyebrow.

"Yes, sir," I replied, nodding.

After some time he left, and I heard a faint knock on the door

"Yes."

"Ma'am you received some flowers, should I move them into your room?." My secretary asked.

"Yeah, thanks." She nodded and left after a few moments, some workers started filling my room with bouquets.

I started counting them "5!? * I exclaimed, "Who the heck sent 5 bouquets?." Baffled, I walked towards the bouquets and checked the card on the flower

"Get well soon! Hm... no name?"

Suddenly, a name clicked in my mind.

"Mr. Jake?"

Why would a mafia care about my health?

Maybe... it's just an act of kindness, I thought.

I couldn't stop thinking about those flowers the whole day.

"Miss Jenny, it's already late. Aren't you leaving?" a worker asked.

"No, Collin. I'll leave after finishing these files," I replied.

He nodded and left.

Time passed.

Around midnight, I finally finished the work and left.

I picked up a bunch of chocolates and ice cream from the convenience store—

But as I stepped outside,

Someone pressed a handkerchief against my mouth.

I fought back, trying to pry the hand away with all my strength.

But my body began to betray me.

Everything blurred.

The plastic bag slipped from my fingers.

Then—

Darkness.
