A decade ago, shortly after Wes's successful Character assimilation…
Wes drifted back to consciousness slowly. The first sensation was a sterile, antiseptic smell, followed by the soft sounds of advanced machinery. He blinked his eyes open; bright lights overhead made him wince. He lay on a comfortable bio-foam bed within a high-tech infirmary room. Gleaming monitors displayed complex vital signs beside him.
Two figures stood near the bed, swam into focus – Doctor Elara Vance and Headmaster Gadkrill Thorne. Relief washed over their expressions when they saw his eyes open.
"Ah, Mr. Callahan. Welcome back."
Doctor Vance spoke first. "The assimilation was… remarkably successful."
Headmaster Thorne nodded; a rare hint of wonder touched his aged features. "Indeed. A synchronization rate of ninety-nine percent is unprecedented in modern history, young man."
Elara gestured towards a large screen displaying intricate graphs and data streams. "Your Resonance Signature bonded almost perfectly with the Proto-Guardian Bulb. The stability is astonishing. We monitored your vitals throughout; the initial rejection was overcome with minimal systemic stress."
Wes pushed himself up slightly, feeling surprisingly invigorated despite the earlier fainting spell. He remembered the surge of power, the 99% reading. A smug grin spread across his face. "So… it worked? I got the strongest Character?"
"You successfully assimilated a Category 3-Omega Bulb, yes."
Elara confirmed. She pointed towards his right wrist, where the Resonance Socket pulsed with a steady, vibrant light, noticeably brighter than before. "The bond is established. Try to manifest your Character, Mr. Callahan. Focus your intent through the Socket."
They gave him space.
Wes closed his eyes and concentrated. He felt a distinct energy welling within his wrist, a presence that wasn't there before. He pictured reaching out with his mind, calling forth the power he now possessed.
A faint frequency emanated from his Socket, like heat haze in the air. It coalesced rapidly, then solidified into a distinct form which floated beside his bed. It was a transparent, milky-white sphere, roughly the size of a soccer ball. Its outer membrane seemed viscous, almost gelatinous, and two large, curious eyes, like pools of liquid silver, blinked owlishly from within its formless body. It bobbed gently in the air.
Wes stared, startled. This… blob… was his powerful Character? It wasn't the imposing armored figure he glimpsed during the assimilation.
Elara's scientific curiosity was fully ignited, thus she leaned closer. She produced a small scanner and took readings.
"Fascinating. The Bulb's core essence seems to have adopted a unique, mutable form upon bonding. Character manifestation often reflects the host's personality and the specifics of the synchronization. Yours appears… adaptable."
She tapped notes into her tablet. "Based on the Proto-Guardian source and this initial presentation, I theorize it possesses both Utility and Combat potential, likely defensive in nature. Its morphic quality is also highly unusual, possibly linked to the near-perfect sync rate. You should, theoretically, be able to command its shape to some extent with focus and practice."
The spherical creature suddenly darted forward and nudged Wes's arm playfully, oscillating slightly. Wes flinched, then cautiously reached out. The surface felt cool and smooth.
"Give it a name, young man," Headmaster Thorne advised gently. "A name solidifies the bond, fosters understanding between Harmonic and Character."
Wes considered this. He looked at the strange, floating entity, then back at his wrist. He wanted something strong, something resonant. "Aroth," he decided. "Your name is Aroth."
The creature seemed to brighten momentarily, its silver eyes blinked rapidly, and it nudged his hand again as if in agreement.
"So, what can it do?" Wes asked eagerly. "You mentioned defense?"
Elara explained, "The Proto-Guardian archetype specializes in protection. We witnessed a brief Full Characterization during the peak of the assimilation – the armored form. That represents a significant expenditure of resonance energy. You will need extensive training to achieve such a state consciously and maintain it. However, your baseline connection, thanks to the 99% sync, should grant you access to its core defensive properties relatively easily."
She consulted her tablet again. "There's more significant news, Mr. Callahan. The assimilation process drastically amplified your innate Resonance Signature. Post-synchronization readings place it at… 82%."
Wes's eyes widened. 82%? That was unheard of for someone his age!
Elara nodded, understanding his reaction. "It's an exponential leap. At this level, even without Aroth manifested, your baseline physical capabilities and resonance output will far exceed your peers. With further training and maturity… you possess the potential to become an S-Rank Harmonic. You could potentially subdue lesser Unus with raw resonance alone. Once you assimilate additional Characters, assuming you can maintain stability–"
Wes barely heard her last words. 82%! S-Rank potential! He was a true genius! A prodigy destined for greatness! His parents would be ecstatic. He had to tell everyone.
"–which will require careful monitoring and further study–" Elara was continuing, but Wes was already swinging his legs off the bed.
"Thanks, Doc! Gotta go!"
He barely spared them a glance and bolted out of the infirmary before Elara could protest or Thorne could offer further counsel.
He burst out into the Academy courtyard; the afternoon sun felt warm on his skin. He spotted a group of classmates, the ones who had also passed the first stage, lingering beneath the shade of a large tree. He swaggered over with Aroth bobbing silently beside him like an obedient, bizarre pet.
They looked up as with curious expressions as he approached.
"Callahan! Are you okay? We heard you fainted."
Wes smirked and puffed out his chest. "Fainted? Please. My body was just adjusting to absolute power."
He didn't need to actively flex; a subtle, potent wave of his newly amplified Resonance Signature washed outwards from him passively. It wasn't an attack, just an ambient pressure that made the nearby students instinctively uneasy, their own weaker resonance signatures were reacting to his presence.
Even Elizabeth Pellesh, who sat reading on a bench nearby, looked up sharply, and her usual composure momentarily flickered with surprise as she felt the surge.
The students around Wes felt it more acutely. Their eyes widened.
"Whoa… Callahan, your resonance… it feels… strong!"
"What happened in there? What Character did you get?"
Wes chuckled arrogantly. "Let's just say I bonded with the best Bulb they had. Ninety-nine percent synchronization." He gestured vaguely at Aroth. "And my Resonance Signature is now 82%. Top of the class doesn't even begin to cover it."
Awe replaced curiosity on their faces. They crowded closer, bombarding him with praise.
"Eighty-two percent? No way!"
"He really is a genius!"
One boy pushed through the small crowd – skinny, with eager eyes and slightly unkempt hair. He looked up at Wes with pure admiration. "Wes, that's amazing! How did you do it? What's your secret?"
Wes recognized him – Duvalo Brando, one of the less remarkable students from a minor family. Wes looked down his nose at him. "Secret? There's no secret, Duvalo. You're either born a genius like me, or you're not."
Duvalo's face fell slightly, but the admiration remained. "Wow… I hope I can be as strong as you someday!"
Wes laughed dismissively. "Keep dreaming, kid. You'll never reach my level."
He then deliberately glanced towards Elizabeth Pellesh, who had pointedly returned to her book, though he suspected she was still listening. He raised his voice slightly. "Looks like I'm officially the number one Harmonic in our year. Can't wait to tell my parents."
Aroth bumped gently against his leg, with its silver eyes reflecting the bright, arrogant certainty shining in Wes's own.
