Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10

The morning air was thick with tension, the kind that clung to the skin and made every breath feel heavier. The forest, once alive with the hum of nature, seemed eerily quiet, as if it too were bracing for what was to come. Darius stood at the edge of the human camp, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched the humans prepare for battle.

He had thought allying with the humans would give his pack a fighting chance, a way to finally stop running and start fighting back. But as he looked around at the faces of men and women sharpening weapons, stringing bows, and whispering about strategies, he felt a pang of doubt. Was this the right choice?

"You look like you're carrying the weight of the world," Elara said, stepping beside him. She was dressed for battle, her leather armor snug and her spear strapped across her back. Her dark eyes, so often guarded, softened as she looked at him.

"Maybe I am," Darius replied, his voice low.

Elara tilted her head, studying him. "You made the right call. The humans trust you. They see you as one of us now."

"That's the problem," Darius said, his tone bitter. "I'm not one of you. I'm a wolf, Elara. And no matter how much they trust me, they'll always see me as something to be feared."

Elara reached out, her fingers brushing his arm. "Not all of us," she said softly.

For a moment, the world around them seemed to fade. Darius looked into her eyes and saw something he hadn't allowed himself to feel in a long time—hope. But the moment was short-lived.

"We move out in an hour," a gruff voice called from the camp.

Darius nodded, pulling away from Elara. "Let's get this over with."

Miles away, Lena paced the length of the crumbling hideout, her mind racing. The wolves who remained with her looked to her for guidance, but she had no answers to give. Darius had chosen the humans, and now they were marching toward war.

"What are we going to do?" Mara asked, her voice tinged with worry.

Lena stopped pacing and turned to face the pack. "We fight," she said simply. "We defend what's ours."

The wolves nodded, their loyalty to Lena unwavering despite their fear. But Lena couldn't shake the gnawing uncertainty in her gut. This wasn't just a fight for survival—it was a fight against Darius, someone she had once trusted with her life.

Aiden stepped into the room, his presence quiet but commanding. "You don't have to do this," he said, his voice gentle.

Lena frowned, crossing her arms. "Do what?"

"Fight him," Aiden said. "Darius made his choice, but you can still find another way. You don't have to go to war."

Lena's jaw tightened. "You think I have a choice? He's coming with the humans, and they'll kill us all if we don't fight back."

Aiden stepped closer, his dark eyes meeting hers. "I know this isn't what you want, Lena. You're not like him. You don't want bloodshed."

Lena's heart twisted at his words. He was right—she didn't want this. But what choice did she have?

"I can't let them destroy us," she said, her voice firm. "Even if it means going against Darius."

Aiden hesitated, his gaze dropping to the floor. "And what about me?" he asked softly.

Lena froze, her breath catching in her throat. "What do you mean?"

"I'm human, Lena," Aiden said. "If this fight happens, where does that leave me? Do I fight with you, or do I stay with my people?"

The question hung between them, heavy and unspoken until now. Lena looked at Aiden, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. She wanted to tell him to stay, to fight with her, but she couldn't bring herself to say the words.

"I don't know," she admitted, her voice barely audible.

Aiden sighed, stepping back. "I'll figure it out," he said, though his tone lacked conviction.

The battle began at sunrise, the golden light casting long shadows across the forest floor. Lena stood at the front of her pack, her heart pounding as she faced the line of humans and wolves on the other side. Among them, Darius stood tall, his expression unreadable.

For a moment, their eyes met across the clearing, and Lena felt a pang of sadness. This wasn't how things were supposed to be.

"Lena," Darius called out, his voice carrying over the tension-filled air.

She stepped forward, her chin held high. "You don't have to do this," she said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her chest.

Darius shook his head. "You left me no choice."

"Is that what Elara told you?" Lena shot back, her words sharp.

Darius's jaw tightened, but he didn't respond. The silence was broken by the sound of an arrow being nocked, and the tension snapped like a breaking thread.

The first arrow flew, and chaos erupted.

Lena darted into the fray, her senses heightened as she dodged arrows and slashed at her attackers. Around her, the pack fought fiercely, their movements a blur of claws and teeth.

On the other side of the battlefield, Darius moved with precision, his strikes calculated and devastating. He fought not as a wolf, but as a leader who believed in his cause.

The sound of clashing steel and the cries of the wounded filled the air, but Lena's focus remained sharp. She spotted Darius through the chaos and made her way toward him, her heart pounding.

When they finally came face-to-face, the world seemed to pause.

"You don't have to do this," Lena said, her voice trembling.

"Neither do you," Darius replied.

Their words were lost as another wave of humans surged forward, forcing them apart.

Aiden watched the battle from the shadows, his heart a storm of conflicting emotions. He wanted to help Lena, to stand by her side, but every instinct told him to stay with his people.

He gripped the hilt of the knife at his side, his knuckles white. He had to choose.

As Lena fought, her movements graceful yet desperate, Aiden felt a surge of guilt. She needed him. The pack needed him.

Before he could second-guess himself, he stepped into the fray, his blade flashing as he fought his way to Lena.

She spotted him and froze, her eyes wide with surprise. "Aiden?"

"I'm here," he said simply.

They fought side by side, their movements synchronized despite the chaos around them. For a moment, it felt like they could win, like they could survive this together.

But the tide of battle shifted, and the humans overwhelmed the pack. One by one, the wolves fell, and Lena felt her hope slipping away.

Darius, now holding the artifact, stood at the center of the battlefield. Its glow cast an eerie light on his face, and for the first time, Lena saw uncertainty in his eyes.

"It's over, Lena," he said, his voice heavy with regret.

Lena's shoulders sagged, her heart breaking as she looked at the remnants of her pack. Aiden stood beside her, his face pale but determined.

"What happens now?" Lena asked, her voice hollow.

Darius didn't answer. He turned and walked away, the artifact glowing in his hand, leaving Lena and the shattered pack to pick up the pieces.

As the sun set, Lena and Aiden sat together in the ruins of the battlefield. The pack was scattered, their future uncertain.

"I'm sorry," Aiden said, his voice filled with guilt.

Lena shook her head, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "It's not your fault," she said. "We'll find a way to survive. We always do."

But as the darkness deepened, Lena couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of their struggles.
