The alarm bell tolled in brutal cadence, shaking stone and sanity alike throughout Ashveil Academy. Otoku and Arthelia emerged from the Nexus Vault's hidden passage into the moonlit courtyard, just as the western gate blew inward in shards of arcane steel and splinters of wood.

Scene 1: The Gate Assault
A horde of ragged, inhuman shapes poured through the broken gate—twisted husks of students long dead, animated by a flickering ember of necromantic fire. Academy guards—clad in storm-forged armor—met them, swords crackling with storm-magic.
Otoku dropped into a combat stance, Arthelia at his flank.
"I'll hold them," he said. "Go warn the others."
She shook her head, blindfold fluttering.
"We face this together."
He nodded sharply and called upon the Codex. A swirl of void-light coalesced at his palm—the Null Sigil—which he thrust into the ground. A dome of black silence expanded, snuffing out the undead's wails and halting them in their tracks.
Arthelia invoked her own power: with a gesture, vines of spectral ash burst from beneath the invaders' feet, binding them in place. Flames died to embers; bones cracked. The husks collapsed.
The courtyard fell silent once more.

Scene 2: Racing to the Vault
Before the guards could regroup, Otoku grabbed Arthelia's arm.
"This is a distraction," he panted. "Whatever's guarding the Vault is more dangerous."
She nodded, grabbing his hand. Together they sprinted back toward the library, past smoking tents and distant shouts. Gravy, cloaked in shadow at Otoku's side, moved with silent urgency.

Scene 3: Secrets in the Vault Chamber
They descended fresh blood and ash onto the Vault door. The Warden stood inside, arms outstretched.
"Every assault weakens the seal," he intoned. "Soon the Fallen Flame will break free."
Otoku's heart thudded. "What happens then?"
The Warden's lantern glowed brighter. "All loops end. Reality collapses."
Arthelia stepped forward. "Show us."
He held out his lantern, and its light spilled across the cracked seal, revealing a shifting mural beneath—the history of the First Star-Eater: a young boy crowned in fire, betraying his own kin, and shattering the sky.
Otoku gasped. "That boy… he's me."
The Warden nodded gravely.
"Your first loop. You were meant to repeat his path—or correct it. Now the Academy reaps the consequences of your return."

Scene 4: Choice in the Dark
Otoku felt the Codex pulse, urging him toward action. The broken mural beckoned.
Arthelia's voice was soft but urgent:
"Do we seal it now—lose the knowledge forever—or use it to end this war?"
Otoku looked at the twisted faces of the husks outside, at the wounded guards, and at Arthelia's blindfolded eyes, trusting him.
"I choose a third path," he whispered. "One that reshapes the loop."
He laid his hand on the seal. Void and flame intertwined around his fingers. The Codex opened wide.
In that moment, the lantern's flame flickered—and a roar of ancient power echoed through the chamber.
