The moment the referee called out "Begin!", both trainers launched into fierce battle.
"Extreme Speed!" Roy commanded first.
Extreme Speed is the ultimate version of Quick Attack, and Lucario had recently mastered this technique to perfection. Under the effects of Extreme Speed, Pokemon move with greater acceleration than Quick Attack, but without the predictable movement pattern—making it flexible and unpredictable.
Lucario's form suddenly blurred, leaving only an afterimage where it had stood. Sceptile, being a speed-type Pokemon with lightning-fast reflexes, spun around and raised both hands to create an energy barrier.
"Quick Guard!"
This was the perfect counter to surprise attacks. This Sceptile showed incredible battle instincts and autonomous fighting ability.
BOOM!
Unable to break through the barrier, Lucario was knocked back by the recoil, rolling through the air to absorb the impact.
Seizing the opportunity, Jaxon called out coldly, "Leaf Blade!"
"Meteor Mash!" Roy countered.
The Leaf Blade on Sceptile's arms gathered emerald green energy, extending the blade to over three feet in length as it leaped forward to slash at the airborne opponent.
At the same moment, an aura barrier appeared beneath Lucario's feet. Kicking off from it, Lucario descended from above, fists blazing like falling meteors!
The blade—sharp enough to slice through steel—met the comet-like fist in a tremendous collision.
Strength, speed, and the opposing energies of Grass and Steel types crashed together, creating a massive explosion.
Both Pokemon retreated from the smoke and dust simultaneously, launching their next attacks without hesitation.
Sceptile clapped its hands together, let out a fierce cry, then slammed both palms to the ground.
Instantly, massive and ancient tree roots burst from the earth, twisting toward Lucario like serpents.
The move was Frenzy Plant.
Lucario's eyes went blank as two blue-green energy orbs formed in its hands, which it hurled forward.
The move was Aura Sphere.
Sceptile was a veteran A+ grade Pokemon that had been building power for two years. During this "accumulation period" when stats couldn't improve further, the only way to grow stronger was through perfecting techniques.
Its Frenzy Plant had reached master-level proficiency.
Each root was harder than steel, and even when broken, the life force within could regenerate the ancient trees instantly.
CRASH!
The devastating power of Aura Sphere shattered the tree roots into wooden fragments.
But the roots weren't destroyed at their source. Fed by tremendous life energy, the trees grew back wildly, returning to full size in mere seconds and attacking like maddened serpents once more.
At the same time, Sceptile's body glowed with vibrant green light as hundreds of mystical leaves materialized around it.
These Magical Leaves poured forth violently, forming a massive whirlwind storm.
This was Leaf Storm.
Also at master-level proficiency, the attack was absolutely terrifying in its scope.
Any other Pokemon that had just reached A+ grade would have already fallen behind under Sceptile's superior skill mastery.
However, Lucario had entered its "Aura Boxing" state, granting speed and reaction time far beyond its normal level. In a split second, it made the optimal choice.
Lucario unleashed another Aura Sphere to counter the regenerating Frenzy Plant at incredible speed.
Then, facing the Leaf Storm, every cell in Lucario's body suddenly generated intense heat, steam rising from its surface.
This was a move that unleashed tremendous power at the cost of defense.
Close Combat!
Lucario's blazing fists met the storm of hundreds of Magical Leaves head-on.
With each punch, dozens of leaves shattered and fell.
In the blink of an eye, ten punches were thrown, completely destroying the Leaf Storm.
With tremendous heat still coursing through its body, Lucario gathered all that energy into one final punch, aiming for the root source of the regenerating trees.
"HAAA!" Lucario roared.
With this punch, it channeled the essence of Dynamic Punch.
The air compressed into a massive shockwave that completely obliterated the tree roots, carving a trench over 200 feet long in the ground before finally stopping.
Close Combat ended, and Lucario breathed heavily while calmly observing its opponent.
Sceptile, also suffering from the aftereffects of Leaf Storm, glared back at its rival.
The battlefield fell quiet for a moment.
"WOOOOO!"
Such a dizzying display of high-speed offense and defense from the very start left the audience stunned before they erupted in cheers.
"What an incredible exchange!" commentator Shaun marveled. "In terms of technique, the experienced Sceptile clearly has the advantage. But this Lucario has shown amazing speed and power, breaking through skill with raw strength! What kind of incredible stat boost is this? Could it be related to that mysterious aura energy surrounding Lucario?"
Shaun's observation was remarkably sharp and accurate.
Pokemon that reach their racial stat limits and enter the accumulation period—unless it's something like Butterfree facing a starter Pokemon—are difficult to distinguish in terms of raw stats. Victory depends entirely on mastered techniques.
Sceptile's two-year accumulation period had given it ample time to perfect its moves.
Every technique it had displayed in this battle reached master level, completely outclassing Lucario in skill proficiency.
The reason Lucario could keep pace with such rapid exchanges was the combined boost from "Aura Boxing" and "Totem Aura"—both significantly enhanced Lucario's stats, allowing it to overcome technique with power.
"But why isn't Roy using the aura fusion he showed before?"
Roy smirked internally.
If I used aura fusion... where would I find the strength for Z-moves later?
You can't use performance enhancers during official Pokemon competitions—this was fair competitive battling, not some underground Pokemon fight.
Drug testing was a real thing.
Without aura fusion available, Lucario and Sceptile were evenly matched. Victory now depended on the trainers' decisions.
Roy's eyes flickered as he broke the standoff first.
"Lucario, use Extreme Speed again!"
The same trick twice?
Is he trying to test endurance? Jaxon's mind raced as he gave orders almost simultaneously.
"Quick Guard!"
Maintaining the status quo.
Against lightning-fast priority moves like Extreme Speed, Quick Guard was the optimal choice, and Sceptile's proficiency with it was extremely high.
However, when Sceptile raised its Quick Guard, it was surprised to find Lucario hadn't charged at all—instead, it had leaped high into the air!
What was happening?
Both Jaxon and Sceptile looked up in confusion at the airborne Lucario.
Against the sunlight, they could only see a dark silhouette.
Then the sun suddenly blazed brighter!
Jaxon's eyes stung as tears formed, and he cursed internally.
They'd been deceived.
It wasn't Extreme Speed but the Fire-type move Sunny Day.
The scorching light struck down, and Sceptile—weak to Fire-type attacks—turned away and squinted.
Lucario's Sunny Day proficiency was low, making it slow to execute. If not misled by the Extreme Speed feint into using Quick Guard, Sceptile could have easily interrupted it.
Sunny Day was weak, so in just one second, Sceptile would regain its vision.
However, that was one fatal second.
"Close Combat!"
Using an aura barrier for propulsion, Lucario launched toward Sceptile, generating intense heat throughout its body once more, concentrating all its power into ten devastating punches.
Channeling Close Combat's power through Focus Punch's technique!
All of Lucario's strength gathered into explosive strikes falling from the sky!
BOOOOOM!!!
A deafening roar shook the entire arena floor.
Smoke, dust, dirt, and debris scattered in all directions.
When the dust settled, Lucario knelt on one knee, chest heaving as it gasped for air.
Sceptile lay motionless on the ground, eyes unfocused, buried under fallen stones.
The countdown ended.
The referee announced loudly: "Sceptile is unable to battle!"
Jaxon wiped tears from his eyes and looked at Roy speechlessly.
This guy had been giving verbal commands the whole time—he'd almost forgotten Roy was psychic and didn't actually need to speak at all...
Usually, Roy fought completely honestly, giving truthful commands. Even prepared opponents would gradually lower their guard, which gave Roy the opportunity for this "dirty trick" at the crucial moment.
This deception had been building since Roy's debut match.
Sneaky—absolutely sneaky!
Moreover, using the imperfect Sunny Day for a blinding control effect was brilliant strategy...
Jaxon picked up his second Poke Ball while Roy recalled the exhausted Lucario.
Both trainers summoned their second Pokemon.
"Roy's Pokemon is Electabuzz!" the announcer shouted. "Has the Elekid that showed such amazing determination finally evolved? If Elekid was impressive before evolution, what surprises await us now? As for Jaxon, he's chosen Blaziken—one of the starter Pokemon!"
Blaziken was a humanoid Pokemon with cream-colored feathers, a distinctive V-shaped crest, three sharp claws wrapped in bandages on each hand, and especially powerful, muscular legs.
Sceptile, Blaziken, plus the notorious trump card Swampert...
Jaxon's main battle team truly represented the luxury of having all three starter Pokemon.
