"Today might be the best day I've had in years," Lurisa said to Yannis as they were going through the elite archives of Springfree. History, alchemy, spell bindings, rules of spells and the repercussions of them all. The books all floated as if on invisible shelves. A light hum emitted from the power around the books. They had made a device to levitate the books. They could only be opened with magic taught in Springfree. It was amazing to watch as books would fly to someone's hands and then that book would be instantly replaced as every book there had an extra for an extra as they could be instantly copied with the magic. As long as someone had read it originally to be able to copy it. Lurisa snapped one down, 'A song of ice. Just ice.' It was meant to be one of the most prolific spell books for ice magic. Lurisa took it and automatically opened it, the college was alerted that it was her scent of magic that operated the book to open. So, if she lost it, they would be aware it was her who was last in possession. She hoped to find some spells she had no idea about, even if they were useless, it was interesting to find out.
Yannis went on his own to look for books. Lurisa suspiciously watched his path, What books are you looking for Yannis? Lurisa nonchalantly strided by his aisle. These books were history orientated, specifically about the school. Strange for someone to look immediately at the history of the school, Lurisa thought. She hovered close to Yannis and he had collected three books. Two were fiction and one was history of great alchemists written under the pen name, Fullmetal. So he didn't grab one about the school. Strolling over in his direction, she wanted to know what the books were about, just a hint of a burning smell omitted off of him. Yannis practiced persistently, but a burning smell off of clothes made it obvious. He didn't turn, his hair cupped around his ears and his burgundy jacket was wrapped loosely around his narrow clavicles, to make him look broader, particularly in his shoulders, "Why do I always hear you tip-toeing around me ice queen?"
She chewed her cheek, "Maybe because I feel like you hate being disturbed."
"Well, now I'm disturbed, so go on. What is it?" Yannis asked, although his mind trotted off, she is obsessed with me. Probably fancies me.
What do I even say? Do I try to trick him into a confession? The grand library with so much knowledge was like a vacuum of silence. It felt wrong to even speak aloud within it. She whispered, "Be honest with me. You're not just here to learn, are you?"
Yannis smirked, shaking his head because it was such an obvious statement, "Who is here to just learn?" A serious glance put him back on track, "of course I'm not. I need to be stronger. We're not all born prodigies, Latixia. I came from nothing, zero. My family can't really use magic. Remember the test you take when you're seven and you have to set your hand on an affinity jewel? I was the only one in my family to actually get a response. Luckily I got flame but I can tease a bit of wind and even–" He shut himself off.
"Are you from a family of noughts?" Lurisa asked hesitantly. The matter could be a tricky one. Some people were actually immune to magic, so telepathy magic couldn't work, of course, physical spells would work. Or else there were some who would become ill due to their exposure of raw essence, that would only happen in areas like Springfree for the most part. However, it did make life that bit more difficult, unable to trigger simple spells that made life far handier, but also unable to be around it in the worst case scenarios.
"No. I'm not," he answered. She couldn't determine if the truth was told or not. Just because they couldn't get an affinity meant little. For example someone like Bill wouldn't obtain an affinity but he would still be capable of pursuing magic, even if he was at a disadvantage. Did any of this even help? All this information just left an even bigger gnawing question, is Yannis the intruder? So far it'd seem somewhat logical. "Latixia," he said amidst her silence, "how about on the weekend we go to the Zoo island. Students get in for free?"
"Eh," Is this a date? Is he asking me to go on a date? He's not really my type but I suppose for more information I should go. She was in a tizzy, struggling to combat the question, "sure. We can go."
Yannis watched her, YannisSalan, he thought, the ladies cannot resist you.
She blushed and strutted away. She had found a desk by its lonesome, it faced the wall and was somewhat built into the corner of the room, so no one would disturb her. She opened her book and began to study, taking the occasional sip of water, which she had frosted with her own touch, one of the many convenient uses of the power. Tarel came over, "What are you looking for Latixia?"
"Just curious enough to want to learn more."
Tarel eyed her up, "Lurisa, were you ever in the city of Geon?"
"Eh, no. Why?"
"No. I just thought I recognised you is all. I remember hearing of a great mage there and the description fits you. Although you would be a bit too young to be her when I think about it. Ah, but I suppose there are plenty of beautiful blonde girls in the world."
"I suppose," Lurisa carried on reading.
Tarel stayed for just a moment longer to make it somewhat uncomfortable and then left. It was as if she had said a question in her head but decided for it to not come out.
After reading for thirty minutes there was one spell in particular that popped out to her. The freezing of vapour. Lurisa had indeed known of it considering she had already done it, but she didn't know the ins and outs of the spell. This gave a detailed review of how to start as a beginner and how to perform even arch level spells. So many of these spells left room for creativity, if Lurisa could freeze moisture in the air, there would be endless possibilities of what to do. One thing ice magic had over the others was the levels of creativity, in her opinion.
Later, while eating dinner in the grand hall, she told Bill and Arthur the great news. Bill shared her excitement about the situation. Food field the scent of the room, reminding many of home cooked savoury meals. Arthur prodded his food, "How have you gone from finding him suspicious to going on a date with him?"
Lurisa's grin disintegrated to a pout, "Well, he asked me and–"
"That's it. Me and Bill will just have to follow you two."
Her blue eyes seemed lighter to Arthur now, they rolled heavily back into her skull, "I don't need you there. I can handle myself."
"Don't beg, Lurisa" he wagged his finger, "I'm coming and that's it. Think of it as insurance. If Yannis tries anything I'll be there."
"He won't do anything in public Arthur. Or is it that you don't trust me?"
"What? I do trust you," he was confused at her comment.
The Mistrit phased between them, "Or maybe he's jealous!" Its mouth opened like a poor mimic of a ghost and placed its two hands on its cheeks.
"She wishes," Arthur played it off super cool. How in the three hells could the Mistrit sense that! Not only that, but to expose it to her.
"I hope not," Lurisa scoffed after he said that. Rude, just because you're not an ugly prince doesn't mean you're too good for me, she thought.
After the conversation dwindled, Arthur was still set on following them.
