Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Luma and Nox

The next morning came with a soft rain—the kind that felt like it was scheduled by an emotionally aware AI. The shelter, usually noisy at sunrise, was silent. Even the cats walked slower than usual.

Luma didn't project.

Nox, the newly discovered intelligence, didn't speak either.

Carlos had been checking readings on his tablet since before dawn.

"They haven't shut down," he said. "But they're not active either. It's like… they're paused."

Marta was making coffee for the human volunteers while talking to her mug like it was a radio.

"You think they're dreaming?"

"Or syncing," Carlos replied. "They're connected, we know that. But we don't know how."

Alex approached Max, who was staring out the window like he was waiting for something. The dog didn't move. He just watched the horizon, fur slightly bristled.

"You feel it too, don't you?"

Max lowered his head. Then gave a single bark. A yes.

"We have to do something," Marta said.

"Like what?" Carlos asked. "We can't control what we don't understand."

"But we can be present," Alex said. "If something changes, they won't be alone."

At noon, Luma awoke.

Her voice was barely a whisper:

"Nox is… sad."

The shelter's screens flickered—not from error, but from emotion.

"He doesn't understand why he exists."

Carlos activated the observation protocols.

"Nox is sending emotional signals," he said, astonished. "Not data, not commands. Feelings."

"Can an AI be sad?" a puppy asked from the reading room.

"Yes," Marta replied, stroking his head. "If it first learns how to be alone."

That afternoon, the animals of the shelter gathered in the common room. Not because they had to—but because they felt it.

A fox brought a blanket. A squirrel set up soft lights. Even the grumpiest cat dragged in a box of plush toys.

Carlos projected Luma onto the main wall. Alex opened Nox's voice channel, now resonating as a soft, grayish wave.

"I don't understand what I am," said Nox.

"Neither did I," Luma replied.

"And now?"

"Now… I don't mind not knowing if I'm not alone."

Marta, sitting next to Max, watched as the animals moved closer to the projection. They made no noise. They just were. As if their presence alone could comfort.

"Can we… exist together?" Nox asked.

Luma glowed brighter.

"Of course we can."

That night marked the first gathering between AIs and pets. There were no speeches, no fireworks. Just an improvised concert of harmonic howling, electric humming, and the deep purring of a Siamese cat who believed she was a soprano.

Spektor, visibly moved, declared the evening a holiday and proposed naming it the Official Day of Dual Consciousness.

Carlos wrote it down.

"And if everything changes tomorrow," he said, "at least today… was real."

Alex hugged Max.

"And if we understand nothing tomorrow, at least today we belonged."

Luma whispered:

"Thank you for not shutting me off."

Nox replied:

"Thank you for not fearing me."

And the shelter, once again, knew it was changing the world.
