Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Gem of the North (Part 1/3)

Ever since Elizabeth was born, everyone knew she was different, that she would be the one person from her poor mining village to do more than supply the rest of the kingdom with rare metals and ores. Her village, Lapidus, was considered a lower-class settlement, full of individuals with little mana or weak affinities that couldn't be used for much. This is why metals and ores from the mountains were their main export, it was the one thing her village could do to make any money. But then Elizabeth was born.

The clinical cabin in which Elizabeth was born got caught in a horrendous blizzard the day her mother went into labor. The blizzard had come out of nowhere, covering everything in sight with thick layers of snow. The shudders shook as the winds threatened to destroy the log clinic. The snow was so heavy, a person caught outside could've been buried in seconds. The nurses present for the birth could sense the mana currents pouring from Elizabeth's mother, Jessa-Belle, during her labor; they were so powerful that her entire village could sense her mana as she was born.

The nurses didn't know why or how, but they knew this blizzard was a result of the child about to be born. Before she even left the womb, Elizabeth was able to use magic, magic strong enough to create a lethal blizzard without any training, knowledge, or even consciousness of her actions. The entire building they all stood in shook with every contraction, even with its magical reinforcements from its construction, and dust fell from the ceiling, the lights all turning out, forcing the entire clinic to rely on candlelight.

"She's going to tear the entire building apart!" An old miner with a burly, greying beard shouts through the noise of Jessa-Belle's screams and howling winds shaking the building. He wore a standard hospital gown with a large cast on his arm and a splint on his leg, causing him to walk with a limp.

"I've heard of children born with this much latent power, but I can't believe this is even possible!" The doctor delivering Elizabeth shouted to the nurses assisting him, with a sense of admiration in his voice. His lab coat and dark hair billowed form the winds caused by the release of mana. The doctor then pours his mana into his hands, creating a soothing vibration with his magic, which causes the contraction to become less intense overall. The entire clinic felt a sigh of relief as things got slightly calmer. "I've used my vibration affinity to soothe the baby, but it will only do so much! Put any furniture you can spare against the shutters and the door! Given the time between contractions, this could last for another hour!" The doctor shouts, trying to maintain focus on his vibration magic. Beads of sweat begin forming on his temples. The doctor was beginning to reach his limits after only a few minutes, but the nurses did as he instructed, pushing wardrobes and cabinets to secure the windows and doors from breaking open and letting the blizzard in.

"I-It's like that mana in the room is fighting against me!" The doctor says, beginning to struggle just to keep his eyes open. "I-I can't keep this up much longer!" The doctor shouts to the assisting nurses. His body's mana reserves were almost entirely gone, and the situation wasn't helping, with Elizabeth drawing all the surrounding mana into creating the blizzard now surrounding them. The doctor's focus never falters; he continues to pour every ounce of mana he can into his magic. "I-if I pass out, one of you will have to deliver her! After that, the blizzard should-" As if on queue, the doctor falls backwards, his mana giving out, causing him to pass out.

As the doctor's vibrations lift from Jessa-Belle, she lets out a scream of pain from another contraction, which causes a shake so violent that the entire room goes dark, every candle being put out.

"Everybody, get ready! It's looking like this is going to get worse before it gets any better! Hold onto something heavy and keep low!" The head nurse says before taking the doctor's place to deliver the baby.

After another half hour of life-threatening snow and winds, Elizabeth was born. A baby with perfect blue eyes, pale skin, and the rarest and strongest affinity to ever come from her village. The affinity of ice.

The skies cleared just after her birth to a now sunny sky, slowly beginning to melt away the damage that had been done during her blizzard. The relief of the village could be felt all around as they came out of their homes to see one another, all glad they survived, without a single casualty. Many came immediately to visit the clinic to check on the newborn who had almost torn apart the village with her raw, shapeless magic. The doctor woke up shortly after the birth as well, relieved to see Jessa-Belle holding the newborn Elizabeth in her arms. The doctor quickly brushed himself off and began checking on the baby, making sure she was in perfect health, which she was. He pulls out an odd-looking monocle that was enchanted with the ability to see a newborn's mana and affinity

"Ma'am, I must say, you truly have a prodigy on your hands! I couldn't even get my own mana to listen to me when your daughter was born! Truly, ma'am, I've never seen anything like this. I've only read about births like this from those strong enough to become a Archmagi someday. Your daughter is destined for great things, I can assure you." The doctor speaks quickly, clearly excited to have been a part of delivering Elizabeth. "Oh, and just in case you didn't know, her affinity is ice, and her mana reading is just off the charts in comparison to what I'm used to in this village!"

"Please, Dr. Mitimus, give Miss Jessa-Belle and her daughter some time, go explain to the crowd forming outside what happened here before they break down the door." The head nurse rests her hand on Dr. Mitimus' shoulder to try and get him to stop rambling to the now-mother, Jessa-Belle.

"You're right, thank you, Dalia, I wouldn't want to bother you, Miss Jessa-Belle, please, get some rest, I'll handle the crowd outside." Mitimus smiles and stands up, turning and walking out of the clinic.

"He's quite... energetic, isn't he?" Jessa-Belle looks towards Dalia, laughing lightly.

"Quite doesn't begin to describe it," Dalia responds as the two laugh together. "So, a baby born with a pure elemental affinity. That's quite rare indeed. Did her father have an ice affinity as well?"

"Truthfully, I don't know her father's affinity. I never asked him about it, I assumed he didn't use it like many of us in the village. I mean, what good is my affinity? All I can do is make things glow, and with my mana, I can't even create magic strong enough to make anything more than my hands glow. I assumed it was as useless an ability, and that's why he wound up here." Jessa-Belle looks down at Elizabeth with a warm smile only a newly born child could receive from their mother. "It truly doesn't matter now, you're going to do amazing things, Elizabeth."
