Adina woke with a soft groan, her entire body aching.
For a moment, she lay still, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling. Her head throbbed, and bandages covered her arms and torso, but underneath the pain, she felt something she hadn't expected.
She was alive… after the war, the bloodshed, the violence. She had survived.
She was missing something—she knew it—but what? Their names suddenly popped into her head. Virelle. Thorne.
Adina shot upright, immediately wincing at the pain that tore through her side.
"Easy, dear. You need to rest."
Adina turned toward the voice and found Thessara sitting beside her bed. Relief flashed across the woman's face when she noticed she was awake.
"Where is Thorne?" Adina demanded.
Thessara's expression faltered. "He's still unconscious."
Adina threw the covers aside, getting to her feet.
