Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Wang Family Next Door

Gu Fuqiao let out a long sigh.

Her parents passed away early, and a few years ago, her only relative, her grandmother, also passed away.

So, actually, whether it's time travel, it doesn't really matter.

Anyway, coming through to this time, she could still submit articles.

Since she's here, she should settle down, but she still needs to avoid Yan Zhen Guo, that lecherous guy, best not to provoke him, just keep him at bay for now!

She would look for opportunities to make money when she had the chance; after all, she planned to leave this place in the future.

Gu Fuqiao lay in bed for a while and felt a bit thirsty, so she sat up and looked around the room, only to find there wasn't a single water cup.

"What kind of place is this? There's not even a cup for drinking water," Gu Fuqiao said helplessly as she got out of bed to find water.

Because there was an injury at the hollow of her leg, she had to walk carefully.

When she walked out, she realized the rest of the room was actually well-furnished. To be precise, only the room where she woke up this morning was in poor condition.

The living room had an electric fan, a hot water bottle, a radio, and even a sewing machine.

Gu Fuqiao had seen a sewing machine at her grandmother's house when she was a child. She remembered when her grandmother went to the neighborhood auntie's house for help to make a Zhongshan suit using the sewing machine before getting her ID card.

Gu Fuqiao stepped forward to touch the sewing machine, thinking it must belong to the original owner; otherwise, why would a soldier use a sewing machine?

But she didn't know how to use the sewing machine and wasn't interested in handiwork.

After looking at it for a while, she lost interest.

Gu Fuqiao continued to stroll through the house. This house was two bedrooms with a living room, and an old electric fan was hanging on the ceiling.

Feeling heated, she slowly walked to the door and turned the fan on.

She looked up at the fan, which began to waver, appearing as if it could fall any moment.

Watching the fan, she felt a chill in her heart and quickly reached out to turn it off.

Beside the fan switch was another room.

Gu Fuqiao reached out to push the door of that room open.

The room inside was cozily decorated. Though it couldn't compare with modern aesthetics, the bedsheets and curtains were the same color—a soft sakura pink.

Though there was only a desk and a cabinet in the room, a pink cloth covered the desk.

"Tsk tsk," Gu Fuqiao mused while looking at the room, "This must have been the original owner's room. Since she didn't like Yan Zhen Guo, she only cared for herself; no wonder she's like this, after all, he's her husband."

Though the previous room was clean and neat, this room was worlds apart in comparison.

After shaking her head, Gu Fuqiao closed the door and thought, since she needed to appease Yan Zhen Guo, she should help tidy up his room later.

That way, divorcing in the future wouldn't cause trouble.

After inspecting the room, Gu Fuqiao remembered she came out to drink water, and started toward the hot water bottle.

But as she passed by the door, she suddenly heard someone speaking outside.

"Sister-in-law, is it true what you said? Is Brother Yan's wife really like that?" a woman's gentle voice came from outside.

Brother Yan's wife? Could they be talking about her?

Gu Fuqiao leaned closer to the door and heard another woman speak.

The woman's voice was sly, "Yes, what a pity for Yan Zhen Guo, such a good person. I've heard from your brother that he has a good family background and limitless potential. Can't understand why he married such a woman with a poor background. Ever since she moved into this building, she's never shown us a good face, acting all superior!"

The woman even snorted coldly at the end.

"Is that so," the woman's voice carried a hint of sadness, "But Sister-in-law, as long as Brother Yan likes his wife, it's fine. Don't talk about this anymore, it's never good gossiping."

Listening to the woman outside, Gu Fuqiao couldn't help but snort coldly, "This sounds quite kind, but who knows if it's true or not, though the tone suggests she really likes Yan Zhen Guo."

"She's actually bad to Yan Zhen Guo, word is she hasn't shown a good face for a long time and doesn't understand etiquette or how to get along with us. I say, it would be better if Yan Zhen Guo married you."

"Sister-in-law, stop it, wouldn't be good if someone hears us," the girl's voice outside came nervously tinged with expectation.

"No one will hear us, that woman acts like a lady, I've heard she wouldn't get up even at noon. Besides, I'm not making it up, your brother and Yan Zhen Guo are good friends, he has a great family background, marrying him guarantees a good life. Anyway, I think Gu Fuqiao can't keep him."

Finally, the truth was revealed.

Turns out the reasons they don't like her are trivial; the main motive is wanting their sister to marry Yan Zhen Guo, aiming for prosperity.

Although she intended to divorce Yan Zhen Guo eventually, it's not up to just anyone outside to declare it!

Just when Gu Fuqiao was thinking to confront them, the woman outside spoke up, "But Yan Zhen Guo, he knows perfectly well his wife is aloof, yet he insists I take her to the clinic, I ended up being dragged into trouble!"

Taking her to the hospital?

Turns out they were from Old Wang's family next door.

Gu Fuqiao sneered at the door, noticing a small lock on it, she lightly latched it then opened the door.

Peeking through the door slit, she watched the women chatting outside and said, "Sister-in-law Wang, you're here?"

"Ah!" The women gossiping about Gu Fuqiao didn't expect her to suddenly open the door.

On her dark, high-cheekboned, mean face appeared a few layers of panic.

It was the girl next to her in military uniform with two braids who reacted quickly. Coming forward, she showed a bright smile and said, "Hello Sister-in-law Gu, I'm Wang Bing's sister, Wang Mei, Brother Yan sent us over to take you to the clinic."

After speaking, she looked at Gu Fuqiao with concern.

Gu Fuqiao smiled back, pleasant-looking at her, unsure if this girl was really kind, but the one who talked behind her back was certainly no good.

"Sis, when... when did you... when did you stand at the door? We were just planning to knock, and you suddenly appeared, that's quite... quite startling," Wang Family's Sister-in-law regained herself, walked over apologetically.

Gu Fuqiao smiled at Sister-in-law Wang.

Guess she got scared; gossiping and getting caught isn't pleasant, is it?

"I just heard movement at the door. I thought Zhen Guo came back," she said, glancing at the door barely open.

Then she waved at Sister-in-law Wang, "Sis, could you help me take a look? For some reason, I can't open the door."
