Chapter 3 - The Spark Within

Jin Muyeon stood over the forge, shirt clinging to his back, sweat soaking the leather grips on his hands. A low hiss whispered from the coals as he stoked the fire, feeding it with the last of the pinewood shavings.

But something felt… off.

The flame was hotter than usual.

Not wildly so—just enough that it shimmered oddly, burning silver at the core.

He leaned in. No wind. No draft. The bellows hadn't even been touched.

Just that strange flicker.

His heart beat faster, and he didn't know why.

The next day, the flame still burned, even though the coals should've died hours ago.

Ruo Lianhua was the first to notice. "It's feeding on something else," she said, crouching near the furnace. "But not wood. Not air."

Muyeon frowned. "What, then?"

She stared at the silvery flicker, her brows furrowing. "Spirit."

He didn't laugh. He couldn't. Deep down, he felt it too—like something ancient had settled into the forge, watching. Waiting.

That night, he couldn't sleep.

His body was sore. His mind, restless. He stepped out into the open courtyard behind the forge and sat beneath the old fig tree. Moonlight dappled the cracked stones.

Then, almost without thinking, he closed his eyes and tried something he'd never done before.

He breathed.

Not with lungs—but deeper. Slower.

The kind of breath his father once mentioned in passing, back when he still told bedtime stories about cultivators with glowing swords and fire-breathing pills.

"True breathing," his father had called it. "Draw in the world. Let it settle inside."

And so Muyeon tried.

He sat still, breathed, and listened.

The village was quiet, save for a few distant dogs barking. The forge crackled gently in the dark.

Then—he felt something.

It was faint. A flutter. Like warmth rising in his chest. Not heat from the forge. Not adrenaline.

Something else.

Like a spark deep inside his soul.

He opened his eyes.

The grass around him had begun to rustle. No wind. Just movement.

And the old fig tree above him? Its leaves shimmered faintly, as if lit by moonlight that wasn't there.

Muyeon stood slowly, breath trembling. His hands tingled, and his pulse pounded in his ears.

He didn't understand what it meant.

But when he looked toward the forge, he knew—something inside him had shifted.

The door to the first path… had cracked open.

Far beyond the village, in the shadows of the Gravepine Forest, the shard of Primordial Flame Essence pulsed brighter still—its glow resonating like a heartbeat.

It had waited for a thousand years.

Now, something—or someone—had begun to call it.
