Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Lines Crossed , Words Burned

Silent house – Adi's room, bed – Midnight

On the bed, Adi and Sophia lie turned to opposite sides.

Adi is asleep.

Sophia, still awake, glances at the clock on the wall.

Sophia (thoughts): It's 2:20 a.m… Midnight. I really can't sleep…

What if I go close to him while he's sleeping…?

But if I don't fall asleep now, I won't wake up early…

It'll be bad if I oversleep. What will everyone think? That I'm careless…

She slowly sits up and checks on Adi.

Sophia (thoughts): He's asleep… Okay, maybe I should take a little walk… to the rooftop.

She quietly gets out of bed, tiptoes out of the room, and walks upstairs.

While passing Rian's room, she notices the lights are on.

Sophia (thoughts): Rian's room? He's still awake?

Whatever… I'll just go to the rooftop.

She pushes open the rooftop door gently.

As soon as she looks straight ahead, her eyes catch a silver-haired figure sitting at the edge of the wall, back resting against the side, staring at the stars.

Sophia (thoughts): Tsukiyo-sis? What is she doing here at this time?

Should I go and talk to her…?

She walks over.

Sophia: T-Tsukiyo-sis? You're here at this hour?

Tsukiyo (calm): Shouldn't I be the one asking what you're doing here?

Sophia: R-right… I couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd take a little walk.

Tsukiyo nods slightly, her gaze still locked on the stars.

Sophia: Um… what about you? What are you doing here?

Tsukiyo: I look at the stars every midnight. For four to five hours. It's absolute.

Sophia: E-every day?

Tsukiyo: Yeah. It's absolute.

Sophia: I got to know a little about you… from Adi.

Tsukiyo remains silent.

Sophia: A-and… about your silver hair.

She chuckles a bit, nervously.

Tsukiyo doesn't respond.

Sophia (thoughts): She's so hard to talk to…

Sophia: Um… today, before the wedding—you came into my room and tested me…

Don't you think that was a little too far?

Tsukiyo finally glances at her with sharp eyes.

Tsukiyo: Far? I can go to any lengths for the safety of my family.

Then she turns back to the stars.

Sophia (with confidence): What was dangerous in that moment, though?

Did you really think I was a threat to your family?

Tsukiyo: Honestly? Yes, at first.

But now I don't.

Sophia: …Okay.

Sophia (thoughts): She's so clear… just like her brother, Adi.

Tsukiyo: How long are you going to stand there?

Sophia: Oh—sorry, if I'm bothering you. I should go…

Tsukiyo: I meant… you can sit.

Sophia: R-really?

Sophia sits beside her… but as she looks down from the rooftop, she quickly stands again.

Tsukiyo: What happened? Don't wanna sit?

Sophia: I-I'm all right standing.

Sophia: Can I ask you something?

Tsukiyo: What?

Sophia: If you don't want to answer, it's okay but… what do you do?

I mean… you rarely come home.

Tsukiyo: …First time.

Sophia: First time? What do you mean?

Tsukiyo: First time anyone's asked me.

Sophia: I'm sorry if I—

Tsukiyo: I can't answer that.

Sophia (smiling): It's all right.

Just like you've been protecting this family all this time…

I'll do the same from now on. I promise.

Tsukiyo stands up.

Tsukiyo: Alright. I'm going.

As she walks away—

Sophia: I want to become like you… How can I?

Tsukiyo stops. Without turning around—

Tsukiyo: You shouldn't.

She walks down the stairs.

Sophia (softly): …But I want to.

Sophia lay on the bed, turned away from Adi, her thoughts still unsettled.

Suddenly, the light switched on.

She blinked, opening her eyes, and turned to see Adi sitting up silently.

Sophia: What happened? Are you all right?

Adi: …No, I'm not.

Sophia: What is it? Tell me.

Adi: How should I…? You know, it's our first night together after marriage and…

Sophia: And what?

Adi suddenly leaned in closer, placing his hands gently on her shoulders.

Sophia's face turned bright red.

Sophia: W-W-What are you—

Adi placed a finger softly on her lips.

Adi: I love you, Sophia. I've loved you since college…

Sophia: W-What are you saying… I can't—

Adi: Do you love me?

Sophia: H-How can I a-answer that…

Adi: It's okay… you don't have to.

He leaned in, slowly closing the distance between their lips.

Sophia's eyes fluttered shut, heart racing.

But just as their first kiss was about to happen—

Sophia's eyes snapped open.

She jolted upright.

Sophia (thoughts): W-What was that?! Where did Adi—wait…

She glanced around the room, then at the clock.

Sophia (thoughts): That was… a dream? I don't even remember when I fell asleep…

It's already 8:10?! I'm late… I'm so careless…

She looked toward the bathroom just as

Adi stepped out—

A towel wrapped around his waist, upper body bare and glistening with fresh droplets.

Sophia's eyes widened and she immediately turned her face away, flustered.

Adi: Sophia, you're awake? Good morning.

Sophia (face still red): Y-Yeah, good morning…

Adi: Why are you looking that way when I'm over here?

Sophia: It's my eyes. I'll look wherever I want.

Adi smirked, walking over to his clothes.

Adi: Fair enough. By the way, breakfast is at 8:30. So, get ready.

But if you want to eat later, that's your wish.

Sophia slowly turned to glance at him again—relieved that he had already dressed.

Sophia: No… I'll get ready and eat with you all.

Adi: Alright. Then don't take too long.

He walked out of the room.

Sophia (thoughts): First that dream… now waking up late…

Why does my heart act like this when I'm with Adi?

Adi and Anya were already seated, with their mother serving breakfast.

Sophia stepped out of the room, now dressed and ready.

Anya: Ahh, sis! You're here. Good morning—come, sit!

Sophia: Good morning, Anya.

She took the seat next to her.

Sophia: Good morning, Mom…

Mother: Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well?

Sophia: Y-Yeah… I actually fell asleep pretty late.

Mother: That's all right. Even I did when I first came to this house.

She smiled as she served breakfast onto Sophia's plate.

Sophia: Mom… I was thinking… I want to help out with housework.

If it's okay, I'd like to start doing some.

Her mother paused and looked at her softly.

Mother: Really? You truly want to?

Sophia: Can I?

Her mother smiled warmly.

Mother: Of course you can. I'm so happy you want to help. Thank you, Sophia.

Sophia: Thank you, Mom.

Anya: By the way, brother—when are you going on honeymoon with sis?

Sophia was mid-sip of her water and suddenly choked, coughing.

Mother: Are you okay? What happened?

Adi: Be careful.

And Anya, don't talk while eating.

Anya: But you just talked!

Adi: Yeah, I did. So?

Anya: Huh?! Why only me then?

She turned to Sophia with a cheeky smile.

Anya: Sis, have you both planned your honeymoon yet?

Adi: Anya. Shut your mouth.

Anya: You're so tense...

Adi stood up, clearly done.

Adi: Okay, I'm finished. I'm heading to the office.

Anya: Wait! You have to drop me—I'm done eating!

Adi: Then hurry up.

He walked toward the door as Anya quickly grabbed her bag.

Sophia stood up from the table.

Sophia: I'm done too. Now tell me, Mom, how can I help with housework?

Mother: Oh, okay, okay—

Before she could finish, the sound of footsteps came down the stairs. Both she and Sophia looked toward it.

It was Rian. Headphones on, long black jacket over light pants, walking straight toward the main door without glancing at them.

Mother: R-Rian...

He didn't respond, lost in his music.

Mother: Rian, I was calling you…

Sophia stepped closer and gently tapped his shoulder.

Rian turned his head, eyes sharp.

Rian: How did you touch me?

Sophia quickly pulled her hand back.

Sophia: I thought you couldn't hear because of your headphones. Mom was calling you...

She looked at the mother.

Sophia: You were calling him, right?

Rian: First of all—who the hell are you to touch me?

Sophia: I… I'm sorry.

Rian: Sorry? I don't get why people can't just mind their damn business.

He turned toward the door again.

Sophia: Wait...

She turned to her mother.

Sophia: You were calling him?

Before the mother could answer, Rian turned back, his face now clearly irritated.

Mother: Forget it. It's my mistake... I just thought I'd introduce you to him, but—

Sophia: Then do it, Mom.

Mother: No… just let it go. Please.

Sophia: If you say so...

Rian: Great. You've really ruined my mood now. And this woman, she—

He pushed his long neck-length hair back with one hand, glaring.

Rian: If I'm not talking, why the hell are you calling me—and she even touched me—

Mother: Please, I'm sorry. Just let it go, Rian—

Rian: Now shut your mouth, you annoying old hag!

Sophia's eyes widened. Her fists clenched.

Sophia: What… did you just say?

Rian let out a long sigh, turned toward the door again.

Sophia: No. You're not going anywhere until you apologize to Mom.

Mother: Sophia, don't—

Sophia: No, Mom. I'm not tolerating this.

Rian turned back, fury in his eyes.

Rian: I should apologize to her? I'm letting this go—what more do you want?

Sophia: I'll say it once more—apologize. Properly.

Rian: Last warning, huh?

In a flash, Sophia swung her fist at his face. Rian caught it mid-air, then swiftly tripped her feet, locking her in a standing arm hold. Sophia struggled with arms and legs, trying to break free.

Still holding her in the lock—

Rian: Don't mess with me again, you bitch.

He flung her down. Sophia hit the floor hard, coughing from the impact. Their mother rushed to her.

Mother: Sophia! Are you okay? It's my fault—I caused all this...

She turned to Rian, desperate.

Mother: Please… forgive her.

Rian: Really? Now my mood's wrecked. Maybe I should teach her even more—

CRASH!

The front door slammed open with a loud bang. Everyone turned.

Sophia, still on the floor, saw the figure. A faint smile touched her lips. Her mother placed a hand over her head.

Adi stood at the entrance, hand still in his hair, brushing it back slowly. His expression—ice cold.

Adi: Now you did it, Rian...

He took a step forward.

Adi: What happened here? No—doesn't matter.

His eyes landed on Sophia lying on the floor.

Adi: That alone tells me everything.

You raised a hand on a woman, Rian...

His voice dropped, menacing.

Adi: Be ready.

Mother's thoughts raced.

This is bad… a storm's coming. What's going to happen between them now?
