Chapter 41 - The Flame keeper

The sun had not yet risen, but the palace of Pyranthos shimmered with an ethereal glow, as if the very walls hummed with anticipation. From the obsidian spires to the flame-sculpted arches, everything was ablaze with enchantment. It was the day of the coronation — not merely a ritual, but a passage that would reforge the destiny of the elemental realms.

Mira stood at the balcony of her private chambers, draped in a crimson robe embroidered with sun-gold phoenix feathers. The air around her trembled faintly, responding to the inner storm of fire she had barely contained since morning. At three months pregnant, her body already carried the weight of the child prophesied to challenge fate. But it was not the pregnancy that made the torches flicker when she exhaled. It was Kael.

He was stirring.

She placed a hand over her belly, feeling the subtle yet unmistakable pulse of magic, a flicker like the heartbeat of a star. Her son was not just alive. He was awakening.

"Kael..." she whispered. A swirl of warmth responded, as though he had heard her.

From behind her, Lady Selene of the Flameguard approached quietly, bowing with reverence. "Your Highness, the Seers await you. The coronation robe has been blessed."

Mira turned, her expression regal but clouded. "Thank you, Selene. Has Jaxon arrived?"

Selene hesitated. "He was seen at the southern shrine last night. They say he hasn't left the Waterfall Cloister. He prays alone."

Mira sighed. Of course. The burden on him was different — but equally crushing. Love, prophecy, betrayal, and the promise of a son who could reshape realms.

The Temple of Embers

The coronation was to take place not in the palace, but deep in the volcanic heart of Pyranthos — the Temple of Embers, where all Flamebearers had once been anointed. The procession was slow and reverent. Royalty from all elemental dynasties watched, draped in silks, armor, and mystery.

The Earth prince, Thoren of Gaiaroot, stood silently beside the Wind Queen Aeris, their rivalry forgotten for the moment. Aryan, Mira's former betrothed and the Iron Ambassador of the Fire East, stood nearest to the dais. He watched Mira with unreadable eyes.

Jaxon appeared moments before the fire veil parted for the ceremony. Clad in deep navy robes adorned with water sigils, he looked like a tide barely held back. When his gaze met Mira's, neither blinked. Neither smiled.

The Rite

The High Flamekeeper began the chant, his voice a song of molten earth and smoke. Mira stepped forward. Her robe transformed, threads of fire weaving into the cloth, wrapping her with living light.

"Do you accept the Flame of Pyranthos, not as birthright but as burden?"

"I do," Mira replied, her voice firm.

"Do you offer your soul to be tempered by fire, knowing that it shall burn you as much as it warms others?"

"I do."

"Do you accept that the child you bear will carry more than flame — but the fire that may undo the world or save it?"

She hesitated. Then, slowly, "Yes."

At that moment, the temple trembled. Kael stirred within her, and a pulse of fire burst from her heart, catching the ceremonial flame and expanding it into a phoenix-shaped blaze that circled the temple dome.

Gasps echoed. The Seers staggered. Even the stone began to crack.

Kael had just answered.
