Chapter 38 - Losing Control

Amelia had always prided herself on her ability to stay calm in the face of chaos. But now, as the weight of the world seemed to crash down upon her, she found herself unable to maintain her composure. The revelation about her father's involvement in corporate schemes that intertwined with Liam's ambitions left her feeling like a pawn in a game she never agreed to play.

She had spent the entire evening pacing her apartment, unable to focus on anything other than the conversation she had overheard earlier that day. She had been walking through the office hall when a door had cracked open, and she had inadvertently overheard a conversation between two senior executives—people she had worked with for months, people she had trusted.

"How long are we going to keep this up?" one of the voices had asked, clearly frustrated. "Liam's too close to Hale's daughter. It's getting dangerous."

The other voice had responded in a low, controlled tone. "We can't back out now. If we do, everything falls apart. The deal between Hale and Blackthorne was just the beginning. We need to leverage Amelia, and we need to do it soon. We can't afford to lose her."

Amelia had felt the blood drain from her face. They were talking about her—using her as leverage. Her mind raced as she tried to process the implications of what she had just heard. Everything—the business deals, the manipulations, her relationship with Liam—had been part of a much larger strategy. She wasn't just a woman caught in a web of emotions; she was a tool in a dangerous corporate game.

Now, she sat on the edge of her couch, her heart pounding, her hands trembling. She had to know more. She had to understand just how deep the corruption ran, how far her father and Liam were willing to go. She couldn't stay in the dark anymore.

Taking a deep breath, she pulled her phone from the table and dialed the one person who might know the truth—Nick, her old friend from college. He had always been there for her, even when her world seemed to be falling apart. If anyone could shed light on her father's dealings, it was him.

The phone rang for what felt like an eternity before Nick finally picked up.

"Amelia? Is everything okay?" His voice was filled with concern, and she could hear the rustling of papers in the background.

"No," she said, her voice tight with frustration. "I need answers, Nick. I need to know what my father was involved in—what he and Liam were really doing. I overheard something today, and I can't shake the feeling that I'm in the middle of something much bigger than I realized."

There was a long silence on the other end, and when Nick spoke again, his voice was lower, more cautious. "You don't know what you're asking, Amelia. This is dangerous stuff. Your father... Liam... it's all connected in ways you can't even imagine."

"Tell me, Nick," she insisted, her voice cracking. "I need to understand."

Another pause. "Alright," he said finally, his voice heavy with reluctance. "But you have to promise me you'll be careful. This is not something you can just walk away from once you know the truth."

"I promise," she said, though she wasn't sure if she meant it. "Just tell me what's going on."

Nick took a deep breath before he began. "Your father and Liam Blackthorne have been at odds for years, but it's not just personal. There are billions at stake here, Amelia. Your father built his empire through shady deals, using people like Blackthorne as pawns in his own game. But somewhere along the line, Blackthorne got smarter—he outplayed your father, and now he's using everything he knows about him to push his own agenda."

Amelia's mind spun as Nick continued. "The deal they made was more than just business. It was a power play. Blackthorne had dirt on your father, and he used that to force him into a partnership. But it wasn't supposed to be a fair partnership. Blackthorne knew that eventually, your father would slip, and when he did, he'd be in the perfect position to take everything. And that's where you come in."

Her stomach twisted as she absorbed the weight of his words. "Me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What do you mean, 'I come in'?"

"Blackthorne is playing both sides," Nick explained. "He's been grooming you, Amelia. I don't think he ever intended to fall in love with you, but I do think he saw an opportunity. He wants you to be his leverage against your father. He wants you to be the final piece that secures his victory."

Amelia's breath caught in her throat. She felt like the ground beneath her was shifting, like the very foundation of her life was cracking open. "No... no, this can't be true. Liam wouldn't do that."

"Amelia," Nick said, his voice now full of urgency. "You need to understand. Liam Blackthorne isn't just some charming billionaire. He's dangerous. He's playing a game with you, and you're the prize. You can't let yourself be the pawn in this war between your father and him."

Amelia felt the walls close in on her. Everything she thought she knew about Liam—everything she had come to believe about their relationship—was unraveling. The connection she had felt for him, the trust she had placed in him, now felt like a cruel illusion. She had been nothing more than a tool in his hands, a way to settle a score she didn't even fully understand.

She sank back onto the couch, her heart heavy with the weight of the truth. "What do I do now, Nick?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

"You need to get out of this, Amelia. You need to distance yourself from both of them—your father and Blackthorne. They're using you, and if you stay involved, you'll only get dragged deeper into this mess."

But the advice felt hollow in her ears. How could she walk away? How could she turn her back on everything she had built, everything she had worked for? Liam wasn't just a business partner anymore. He was someone she had cared about, someone she had fallen for despite the odds. But now, the reality of who he was—and who her father had been—threatened to tear apart everything.

"I don't know if I can just walk away, Nick," she said quietly. "There's too much at stake. I've already given so much of myself to this... to him."

Nick's voice softened, but the seriousness in his words was unmistakable. "Then you need to decide what you're willing to lose, Amelia. Because if you stay in this, you'll lose more than just yourself. You'll lose everything."

Amelia didn't respond right away. She could feel the weight of his words sinking into her chest, suffocating her. She had no answers, no clear path forward. She only knew that she was trapped in a web of lies, betrayal, and power struggles, with no way out.

After a long silence, she whispered, "I'll think about it, Nick. Thank you."

With that, she ended the call, her heart heavy with uncertainty. She didn't know what the future held, but one thing was clear: she was losing control. The game was no longer just about her feelings for Liam or her father's legacy. It was about survival.

And Amelia wasn't sure she was ready for the battle that was about to unfold.
