Chapter 80 - Anchored In Chaos (Her POV)

Chapter 80: Anchored In Chaos (Her POV)

I lay in the dark beside him. My hand rested over his chest, pushing soft waves of healing into his body. Normally, he healed fast, his magic wild and regenerative. But not now. Not with the collar. Not with his magic sealed. The thought slid cold down my spine: Malvor was vulnerable. Truly vulnerable. For the first time. That terrified me more than anything. I stayed there a little longer, my cheek pressed to his shoulder. Then I slipped from the bed, moving quietly through Arbor.

Padding barefoot into the kitchen, I decided today wasn't going to be about mochas. Not this time. No, today I wanted to surprise him. I raided the pantry. Chocolate syrup. Strawberry swirl. Blueberry extract. Orange zest. A dash of pomegranate. Even green apple. By the time I was done, it looked like a rainbow had declared war on a sugar factory. I topped it with whipped cream and rainbow sugar. Chaos in a cup.

By the time I came back to the bedroom, Malvor was sitting up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. His gaze flicked from me to the glass of technicolor madness in my hands. "Your offering, oh Chaos of my heart," I declared, doing my best to keep a straight face.

His lips curved in that slow, sinful grin. "Did you murder a unicorn for this?"

"No, but I bribed one with compliments." I handed it to him with mock solemnity.

He took a cautious sip, and his eyes widened. "Oh. Oh, this is… this is a lot."

"Every sip is a different flavor," I said, leaning against the doorframe with my arms crossed.

He took another sip, strawberry, then blueberry. "Are you trying to give me a sugar high? Because you should know, a sugar-high Malvor is just me with fewer morals."

I arched a brow. "Fewer?"

He licked a smear of whipped cream from his lip, smirking. "I'm already thinking about how this tastes like a fruit basket, and I could make a dozen jokes about your peaches, your melons, your-"

"Finish that sentence and I'll dump it on your head."

"Promises, promises," he teased, another sip staining his nose with a streak of whipped cream. "But seriously, Asha… this is wild."

"Chaos in a cup. Thought you'd like it."

"I love it," he murmured, and before I could react, he leaned forward and kissed me, soft, sweet, a burst of blueberry and chocolate still clinging to his mouth. "Thank you, my wild, wonderful troublemaker."

I smiled, but my heart pulled elsewhere. "We need to work on getting that collar off."

He lounged back, shrugging. "Yeah, yeah, you're all work, my Eternity. It's part of me. Always has been. Ricky didn't put it there. He just reminded it what it used to be."

"Hmm… that's an idea."

"First Magic. Creation-level old. You can't remove it without removing part of me. Best you can do is change what it does." He rolled out of bed slowly, "Hmm, what to do today?" He snapped. There was a chess table set up in his room. "Play with me Asha?"

I nodded and sat. The chessboard shimmered to life between us, pieces bursting into existence with a clamor of color and personality. Knights with flaming manes. Bishops levitating. Pawns armed with toothpicks. Malvor flicked his rook forward, flaring with golden light. It galloped across the board and sent another piece flying.

"That's not legal," I said flatly.

"Chaos, my love, rules are just suggestions."

Two turns later, I moved my bishop. It stretched its wings mid-stride and became a dragon, devouring his knight in one bite. Malvor gaped. "Wait... that's cheating."

I grinned. "Chaos, my love."

The game devolved instantly. His pawns threw fireballs. My queen turned invisible, only to assassinate his king's guard. His bishops started singing hymns every time they captured a piece. My rooks fused together into a massive juggernaut and wiped out his flank.

"You can't just—"

"You set the rules or rather, you destroyed them."

He burst into laughter. "Oh, you are glorious. I love you."

"Admit defeat?" I teased, my dragon rearing back, smoke curling from its jaws.

He narrowed his eyes. "Never."

The board shuddered. The sky above us darkened for half a heartbeat. I tapped my dragon piece. "Checkmate."

His mouth opened to protest, but the room trembled, soft at first, then stronger. The floating candles overhead flickered, flashing blue, then white, then gold.

"Cheating, love?" he said lightly, but there was tension under it. The chessboard cracked. The pieces warped, their colors draining to gray. My dragon-bishop wailed soundlessly before collapsing to ash.

"Malvor…" My pulse stuttered.

Thunder, no, not thunder. A rumble, deep, like something ancient shifting beneath us. The walls twisted. The colors of the room bled, dripping down the walls like wet paint. The windows warped. My breath caught. My hands curled into fists. Malvor was already on his feet, his grin gone, eyes sharp as blades. "Domerik," he growled, spinning toward the warping walls. "Coward. Sneaking shadows into my realm?"

"You shouldn't exist. But I will correct that mistake."

The ceiling split open with a jagged tear. Wind screamed through the room, shredding curtains, whipping my hair into my face. The ground bucked. Malvor grabbed me just as a blast of force slammed into us, knocking me back against the bed. His arm held me tight, anchoring me as the world itself cracked.

Domerik roared, his voice everywhere, too close. "I will sever what she stole! A bond forged in lies cannot withstand truth."

Malvor's grip tightened on my shoulder. His voice was low, but I felt the fury burning in him. "Stay close. Don't leave my side."

"Malvor-" I could barely breathe. Fear clawed at me, but anger burned hotter. He has taken everything from me. He will not take this. "Can he get in?" My voice broke despite me.

"No," Malvor snapped, even as the walls shivered and the sky split wider above. "He can't, not without my permission. But this… shouldn't be possible. Unless someone showed him the way."

Another tremor ripped through the room, a roar of magic so strong I tasted ash in the air. Domerik's voice thundered over it all: "I will show them the truth. I will free them from your deception."

Magic sparked at my fingertips. Just a flicker. Barely enough to burn, but enough to remind me I wasn't helpless. I met Domerik's gaze. Fear churned in my chest, but rage flared hotter. "Don't let go."

His grip on me was iron. His eyes blazed. "I won't. But when he forces his way in—" He bared his teeth. "—fight."

The words slammed into my mind like war drums, pounding in rhythm with my pulse. My fingers clung to Malvor's arm, my anchor, but his hand on my shoulder trembled. He tried to make his voice sound like iron when he said, "Stay close. Don't leave my side."

The lie was there, flickering in his eyes. That dull tan bleeding through the gold. The sheen of sweat on his brow. The tremor in his breath. The cracks in the mask he always wore for me.

"Malvor?" My voice came sharp and soft at once.

"I won't let him in. I won't-" His voice cracked, splintering under the weight he carried. "Not without my-"

CRACK. The air ripped open. The walls bled their colors, melting like a storm of liquid light. The ceiling twisted. Domerik's voice roared through the breach: "You are a flaw! A fracture in the divine design!"

Malvor flinched and recoiled. His hand slipped from my shoulder, clutching the bedpost as if wood could hold him when divinity couldn't. Gold shimmered faintly across his skin, then dimmed. The light bled out of him. "I'm… I'm sorry, Asha." His voice wasn't a god's voice anymore. It was small and weak. His knees buckled.

"No. No, you're not-" I surged forward, catching him as he collapsed. His head fell against my shoulder. I saw it in his eyes. The raw, naked fear. The golden light fading, his pulse stuttering beneath my fingertips.

"Asha…" A single tear slid down his cheek. "I can't-"

Thunder ripped through the room, but it wasn't thunder. A shockwave. The world itself convulsed. Malvor jerked once, fingers twitching like he was reaching for me. Then... Nothing.

His eyes dulled. His weight collapsed into my arms. The gold vanished from them. "Malvor?"

No answer. A crack split the wall behind him. Then another. The floor buckled beneath my knees. Somewhere deeper in Arbor, glass shattered. Color drained from the ceiling as fractures raced through the room, branching through walls and windows. "No. No, no, no—"

I shook him. "Malvor, please—"

Nothing. His magic was gone. Arbor was breaking around me. Tears burned down my face. Panic twisted sharp into fury, raw and primal, clawing its way out of me. "Domerik. You won't take him from me. Not again."

My magic surged, no longer a flicker, but wildfire, ripping through me, devouring me. Pain became power. Despair became a weapon. "YOU WON'T TAKE HIM FROM ME!" The room exploded in light and chaos. My power lashed out, storming against Domerik's presence.

"You are a fracture in the design." his form twisting into a silhouette of law and dominion. I hurled my magic again, wild, desperate, but he sliced it apart, snapping each flare into clean, perfect lines. "Chaos cannot defeat Order. I am the Law. I am the Truth. And you-"

The world folded inward. Gravity slammed me to my knees, pressure clawing into my bones. My vision blurred, my lungs fought for air. The pressure changed. Something reached for the runes beneath my skin. Domerik's voice dropped, cold and precise. "Divine designation: revoked."

Pain ripped through me. I doubled over, clutching my ribs as one rune after another flared beneath my skin. "You were never granted rightful place among us. I am correcting the record."

I reached for Malvor through the bond. Nothing. My stomach dropped. "No."

Domerik pulled again. Luxor. Tairochi. Ahyona. Calavera. Every divine thread inside me strained like he was trying to tear names from flesh. "You stole what was never yours." I shoved my magic against him. He cut through it. "I will return the Pantheon to its proper state."

Something inside me tore. I knew I couldn't survive another command like that. So I stopped trying to fight him. I tore open reality instead.

"NO!" Domerik roared. "YOU WILL NOT-"

I didn't wait. I lunged, my bones screaming, my magic tearing itself apart as I flung myself into the rift. Darkness swallowed me.
