Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The Devil's Diary

The Journal of Caelum Morningstar:

First Entry:

Ms. Emma Tig, the school's guidance counselor, told me to start a journal since it helps with dealing with thoughts and emotions. She says most new students could use one since they've gone through something traumatic. Vampires since they've recently died, and werewolves because they've recently killed someone.

I was surprised to find out that dying with vampire blood is the only way for new vampires to be made in this world. From what I knew in my world, vampires could procreate, and even dhamphirs existed. Then now I'm wondering how Caroline(she insisted I don't call her Ms. Forbes since she looks eternally 17 as a vampire) had twin daughters that I met earlier. And then there's Hope, whose entire family, besides her Aunt Freya, are all vampires as well. How does that work? I'll have to ask them later.

My first day here at the school was quiet, to say the least. Definitely not how I expected things to go. When we arrived at the school, I met Josie and Lizzie Saltzman, the daughters of the headmaster and Caroline.

Anyway, when they asked who and what I was, I introduced myself and said I'm a devil. I thought they would be scared, but they were just curious and started asking what I could do. I told them I could fly and showed them my wings. They wanted me to carry them and fly them around, but Caroline stopped them and told them I still need to get settled in.

I met the Headmaster Alaric Saltzman. He was a bit more wary of me. I can tell. But he trusted Caroline and let me stay. They gave me a room to stay in. Then asked me to meet with Ms. Emma, the guidance counselor. We talked about some things, and then she gave me this journal before I left. So I guess that's it? Still not sure how this is supposed to work or if I'm doing it right.

Late addition: Talked to Caroline and Hope. So the twins are the headmaster's daughters with his wife (or fiancée, they didn't complete the wedding), Caroline was just the surrogate and gave birth to them. For a world whose supernatural population involves 3 species, some weird things are happening here.

As for Hope, she calls herself a Tribrid. Klaus was the Original Hybrid, her mom was a werewolf alpha, and she inherited the magical abilities of her grandmother, so she's a werewolf, witch, and vampire. But she says she's not a full tribrid yet since she has to die to activate the vampire side of her.

Second Entry:

A few days in, and while I've had no problems with the students so far, I haven't made any new friends either. I just spent time with Hope. We talked mostly about how similar we are. We both have fathers with bad reputations, and we are very unique as far as supernatural species go.

Some classes are a struggle. They had me join a Chemistry of Magic class since I can use magic. They had these weird incantations to do spells. I asked why, and they looked at me like I was crazy. The professor asked me to demonstrate how I would do a fire spell if I didn't have incantations. I just made fire appear. The professor asked me how I did that, and I just told him that I imagined it and made it happen. They had a lot of questions after, and it got a bit exhausting.

The twins went looking for me after, asking for more demonstrations of my magic. I didn't know what to show them, so I conjured a dessert I tasted yesterday—a cupcake, I think it's called. They said it tasted great, but it will make them fat. I told them it's made of magic, so it will just change back to magic, so it shouldn't be a problem. I think I broke Lizzie.

Third Entry:

Hope asked me to accompany her to movie night in the common room. She had to explain to me what a movie was. We watched something about people wearing weird clothes. She said they are called superheroes and they save the world.

The twins asked me to make more conjured food. Surprisingly, it gives them magic. Since they're siphoners and they can't use magic without absorbing it from somewhere else first. Seems inconvenient. Then they found out I didn't know what a movie was so now I have movie watching as part of my schedule so I can catch up.

Hope held my hand sometime during the movie as she leaned on my shoulder. It felt nice. I didn't want to move or let go.

Fourth Entry:

It's fascinating how humans progressed without magic. I was having breakfast with Hope and the twins when they got drinks from this cabinet that's cold inside. We usually just have a spell for those. They even have a separate machine just for making bread hot.

It's been a learning experience. It took some time to adjust, especially since after reading through some of this world's history, how I remembered my Dad describing the world would match with something from 600 years ago in this world. It felt strange. If the time between worlds is the same, then I've been unconscious in the Dimensional Gap for about 600 years, maybe more. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Fifth Entry:

It's been a few months. There's not much that happened besides me learning more about this world. Although I did learn about something new called "Flag Football" which the school plays with students from the school for humans. The headmaster asked the team to play badly on purpose so that the other team would win. I thought it would be a good experience to get familiar with Telos Karma. Towards the end, I made the other team's quarterback, I think it's called, unable to complete a proper pass. He looked rather clumsy towards the end.

The headmaster was not happy when he found out I did something, but because it just looked like the other team got overconfident and we didn't play better than they expected, he let it go. He just asked me not to do it again. The students celebrated, and I think most of them like me now because of it.

Sixth Entry:

I think I've adjusted quite well to this world. There are still some things that surprise or intrigue me from time to time, but overall, I think I'm familiar with most things now. And I couldn't have done this without Hope. Which is why I asked her out on a date today, since that's part of this modern world's courtship ritual. She smiled and said: It took me long enough.

We went for a picnic this afternoon near the lake. We just sat, ate, and talked some. Then, when the stars came out, we lied down on the blanket. She rested her head on my chest as we enjoyed the peace and quiet of the night.

As it got late, I asked her if she wanted to fly back instead of walking. She stared at me for a while before giving a quiet nod. I carried her in my arms as I flew. The air was cool, and she held on tight. When we landed, I escorted her back to her room. She kissed me. I froze for a bit, then I kissed her back. When we pulled apart, she smiled and we wished each other a good night. I rushed back to my room and started writing because I don't want to forget this. I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.

Seventh Entry:

Caroline and Dr. Saltzman talked to me today. From the look on their faces, I knew it was serious. Part of me was scared that they'd ask me to leave the school. I'm thankful that was not the case, but the reason they called me isn't any better.

They told me about something called the Merge. About how the twins must undergo a ritual to be the next leader of their coven when they turn 22, and how one of the twins will die in the Merge. I asked them why they were telling me, and Caroline said that the reason she travels a lot is because she's looking for a way to stop the Merge, but the best lead she's found so far is Telos Karma. She remembered what I said about Telos Karma's balance breaker and how it can alter reality to get the result I want.

I said I was willing to try, of course. But there's no true manual for achieving balance breaker. It's just usually triggered by a user's emotional state. But now I have a reason to keep training. To keep getting stronger. I told them I need to make contracts since devils get stronger the more contracts we complete.

I left the headmaster's office with the weight of that knowledge. Hope noticed immediately and dragged me to my room and asked if I wanted to talk about what's on my mind. I couldn't lie to her, so I told her. He just hugged me and told me she'd help with anything I need. Then it slipped out. I told her I love her. She was stunned. But then she kissed me and told me she loved me too.

Eighth Entry:

Hope told me she missed her family. I teleported us to her room in New Orleans. She was surprised and asked if I could just go anywhere whenever I want. I told her I can go anywhere I've been or somewhere that has something I can connect to, like the summoning flyer she used. She kissed me, then we went to meet her family. We had dinner with them. Hope told them I was her boyfriend now. I thought her dad was going to kill me. But he just asked me not to break her heart.

We teleported back and were called to Dr. Saltzman's office. He asked me to at least inform someone if we intend to go out, especially through unconventional means.

Ninth Entry:

A new vampire student named Milton, or I guess MG since he doesn't like his name much, invited me to Dungeons & Dragons. I thought my presence had started to affect this world, and dragons had started showing up, so I prepared for combat. Turns out it was a game about imaginary battles. They gave me a paper with some information on who I was supposed to be and some dice. I figured I might as well make it interesting, so I cast an illusion on the board to make everything look real, from the environment to the characters, even the magic spells and battles. They enjoyed it a lot, and I now have a permanent invitation to keep coming back.

Latest Entry:

It's been more than two years since I got summoned here. I used to think I didn't belong anywhere until Hope asked me to come to this school. Now I have people I care about, and people who care about me.

The twins call me their emotional support devil. I think they just want guilt-free desserts. Especially since I found out they wanted Caroline to adopt me after I showed that trick to them. MG refuses to play D&D without me now because it's just not the same without the illusions anymore. Kaleb started hanging out with us after I took his side when Dr. Saltzman got mad that he was drinking human blood. I told the headmaster that if the school is meant to prepare them for the real world, then they need to know how to control their urges. Otherwise, if they get a taste of human blood by accident, they might go out of control. He talked to Caroline about it, and she agreed with my point, being a vampire herself. Caroline still travels a lot still looking for other solutions to the merge, but now mostly to find contracts for me so I can get stronger.

Then there's Hope. She's everything. We're always there for each other. We're stronger together, and we are still together, and I don't plan on letting go.

As for Telos Karma, I have more control over it now. Although balance breaker still remains elusive. But I won't stop trying. Especially with what's at stake.

Because these people are my family. And this school is my home.

And if anyone or anything ever threatens them, they won't be facing Caelum Morningstar, they'll be dealing with the son of Lucifer, and they'll experience the wrath of the devil within.
