Chapter 18 The Crucible of Flesh and Steel
The sky over Base Five had ceased to be a sky. It was a suffocating dome of churning, charcoal-colored ash, heavy with the stench of sulfur, rotting flesh, and the sharp, metallic tang of blood. The screaming of the alien horde was a constant, deafening vibration that shook the very marrow of the defenders' bones.
On the wide, blood-slicked stone battlements, the defensive lines had dissolved into a chaotic, terrifying meat grinder. This was no longer a disciplined military stand; it was a desperate, visceral struggle for survival.
"Don't let them cluster! Keep your spacing!" Captain Dev screamed, his voice hoarse as he jammed his spear through the multiple eyes of a scaling beast.
But his orders were instantly swallowed by the horrific shriek of a Void Ravager—a massive, centipede-like alien horror that had breached the eastern wall. Its segmented body, easily the size of an armored vehicle, was covered in a jagged, obsidian-hard shell that oozed a bubbling, green acidic mucus. Wherever the mucus touched the stone, the ancient masonry hissed and melted away, filling the air with toxic, choking white smoke.
With a brutal snap of its massive mandibles, the Ravager snatched a young Base Five soldier by his waist. The boy's awakened physical defense shield flickered and shattered like fragile glass under the pressure.
"Help me! Lord Bali—!" the boy screamed, his fingers clawing desperately at the stone, leaving bloody streaks before he was violently dragged into the beast's grinding maw. The horrific sound of crushing bones and tearing metal echoed across the parapet, a brutal reminder of the absolute ruthlessness of their enemy.
"Die, you ugly bastard!"
A massive, battle-hardened man leaped from a stone archway, his twin broadaxes glowing with a heavy, brown earth-prana. This was Breg, the Captain of the Iron Hound Mercenaries. When the red alert had sounded, these mercenaries—rough, pragmatical killers who usually fought only for bounties and resource cores—had realized there was no escaping the mountain pass. They had joined the military on the walls, fighting with a brutal, dirty efficiency.
Breg activated his awakened talent, Vajra Skin. His flesh took on a dull, stone-like gray color as he slammed his axes directly into the Ravager's neck joint.
"BOOM!"
The gravity-reinforced strike cleaved deep into the beast's shell, spraying a fountain of dark, boiling blood.
"Get back, Breg!" a mercenary yelled from behind, throwing a net woven from lightning-infused metal wires over the thrashing beast. The net sizzled, discharging thousands of volts of blue electricity that locked the Ravager's muscles.
Breg yanked his axes free, wiping a splash of acidic blood from his stone-like cheek, where the flesh hissed but refused to melt. "Watch the acid, you idiots! One drop of that will eat through your boots in seconds!"
Despite the sheer, terrifying horror of the alien assault, the humans were not helpless. Every single soldier stationed at Base Five was an awakened warrior, trained to channel their prana into lethal combat techniques. They fought back with a fierce, desperate coordination.
A defensive squad of shield-bearers stood in a tight semicircle, their heavy iron tower shields locked together.
"Form the barrier! Now!" the squad leader roared.
Simultaneously, the five soldiers activated their combined talent, Earth's Embrace. A solid, shimmering wall of golden prana expanded from their shields, forming a protective barrier just as a barrage of razor-sharp, bone-like spikes was launched from the alien ranks below.
"THUD! THUD! THUD!"
The bone-spikes, each the size of a javelin, slammed into the barrier, cracking the golden light but failing to break it.
Behind the shield wall, a squad of awakened archers drew their heavy composite bows. Their arrows glowed with a violent, crackling blue electricity.
"Release!"
A volley of lightning-infused arrows arched into the sky, raining down upon the dense sea of monsters packing the outer valley. Upon impact, the arrows detonated, sending arcs of chain-lightning tearing through the ranks of the beasts, frying their nervous systems and causing their mutated bodies to explode in bursts of dark vapor.
To the left, a group of wind-affinity mercenaries danced through the carnage. They didn't stand and block; they used their awakened speed to dodge the sweeping claws of the alien beasts, their dual daggers slicing through the vulnerable, unarmored joints of the monsters' limbs.
"We need more prana at the southern gate!" a soldier yelled, his face half-covered in blood as he dragged a wounded comrade toward the rear. "The winged ones are dropping from the sky!"
Indeed, flying, gargoyle-like alien abominations—Vesper-beasts—were diving through the thick smoke. They used their elongated, needle-like talons to snatch soldiers straight off the battlements, carrying them high into the dark storm clouds before dropping them to their deaths on the jagged rocks below.
The air was a chaotic nightmare of sound: the deafening booms of exploding prana cannons, the wet, sickening sound of tearing flesh, the desperate curses of mercenaries, and the terrifying, hive-mind roars of the alien invaders.
In the center of this living hell, Dhruv and Shikhanda fought like gods of war, but even they were feeling the immense pressure of the endless horde.
Dhruv's moonlight-white cloak was now splattered with dark, acidic blood. He moved with a cold, terrifying precision, his sword Dharma's Edge a blur of lethal light. Every sweep of his blade cut down multiple beasts, but the physical and mental toll of maintaining such high-level combat for hours was beginning to show in the tight lines around his eyes.
"They aren't slowing down!" Shikhanda shouted, his voice cracking as he unleashed another roaring torrent of white-hot fire that cleared a fifty-foot section of the wall. The intense heat of his flames had turned the stone beneath his feet into a semi-molten slag, but more monsters simply crawled over the glowing, melting stone, indifferent to the pain. "The alien prana in the air... it's suppressing our recovery! We are burning through our reserves too fast!"
"We hold, Shikhanda!" Dhruv replied, his voice flat and unyielding as he parried a sweeping claw from a mutated beast and drove his blade straight through its pulsing green core. "We hold until Meera and Atmika stop the sacrifice. If the portal opens, none of us leave this mountain."
Lord Bali stood nearby, his heavy broadsword notched and dripping with black blood. He had lost three more of his personal guards to a flying abomination, but his fierce aura remained unbroken. He stood like an ancient pillar of the fortress, his voice roaring out encouragement to his tired men. "Keep fighting! The dawn is coming! We are the shield of Aryavarta!"
But looking out toward the dark horizon, Bali's remaining eye filled with a cold, grim dread.
The massive, towering silhouette in the mountain pass had stopped moving. It was raising a giant, three-pronged spear toward the swirling vortex in the sky. The space-rift above the base was beginning to pulse with a violent, purple light, and the terrifying pressure in the air was growing heavier by the second.
The alien commander was preparing to force its way through the rift.
