Chapter 48 - Chapter 47 - The Next Game

"Why should I even care?" I said, trying to free my arms and legs from nails. Of course, I couldn't. Every time I tried to move my limbs, a sharp pain would jolt through my body. Since tearing my limbs was the only option, I gave up on getting the nails out. "You won't be freeing me anymore, and even if you do, I will likely die sooner than I can think about it."

I meant those lines when I said them. Blood loss was just catching up to me, and the dizziness had begun to get worse. My breathing and heartbeat—everything was out of control. I felt as though I was unable to think at all, despite the fact that my mind was racing with thousands of thoughts. Thoughts of what? I don't know; none of them were complete. But it wasn't something I was going to focus on, as if I could focus at all.

I heard the writing noise again. "Shut that shit off…" I screamed, or at least I tried, because that was the last sentence I could make. I had weakened so much that my head felt like a stone I needed to carry, which didn't last long.

My limbs were indeed a little bit numb, but I could still feel the pain in my bones. I dropped my head on the table, and the pain made my body move on its own. My arms pulled against the nails, which hurt even more. Then my legs moved too, and I ended up tearing all my limbs out of the nails. Simply, out of reflex to pain, my limbs were freed, but at what cost? The holes on my arms had been stretched to the level that I could see the other side from one of them. I couldn't even check my legs, because the pain didn't let me move a muscle, which would hurt even more. As I expected, a minute later, I lost my consciousness.

I don't know how much time passed, but when I woke up, I felt a sharp pain in my right arm. Reflectively, I tried to pull it, but something held it and didn't let me. As I opened my eyes, I saw two masked men standing next to me and injecting something into my veins. Since one of them was holding my arm down on the table, I couldn't move it.

"What are you doing?" I asked, still trying to wake up.

"Do not worry, this injection is not dangerous. It is meant to wake you up so you can continue with the next game," the one with the needle in his hand said.

"Why doesn't he heal me? Isn't that faster?" I asked, trying to stand up, but the man pushed me down by pressing down. "Just let me stand up," I said.

"It is not a great idea for you to stand up right now. Your legs hurt, and you run the risk of getting hurt again. Additionally, you won't receive any kind of healing for the prior game," the man added as he took his hand off my shoulder. "That was stated in the game rules. This was just an adrenaline shot to wake you up."

"Okay, but can I get some water?"

"Of course," the man said. Then he left the room and came back with a bottle of water and a glass. He put the glass on the table and opened the bottle to pour, but I took it out of his hand and chugged half of it in an instant.

"What's the next game?" I asked, putting the bottle down. They did not answer but left the room silently. Instead, I heard that annoying, familiar noise.

"The next game will be a little chess game," the text said, with no additional notes.

"Chess?" I said to myself, "I hope my opponent isn't Layla. I just can't beat her in che-"

Only at this moment did I realize what I had done. The scene where they nailed her arms to the table came in front of my eyes. I couldn't believe it. Did I really purposefully let her answer?

"How is she? Don't tell me she is d-" New text appeared, interrupting my question.

"You do not have to worry. She is okay. At least better than you."

"I hope she is," I said. "When is the next game starting?"

There was no response from the wall, so I didn't even stand up; I tried to close my eyes and rest a bit. My mind and body were not listening, so sleeping would be the best choice.

But at that moment, I heard the door's handle. I opened my eyes just enough to see who was coming in, but the person who entered was someone I didn't think I would see again.

"Mom?" I screamed as I rushed towards her.
