Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: Sparks, Wings, and Smog

Some time had passed since Mirajane Strauss and her siblings had joined Fairy Tail. Though still new to the guild, Mira was beginning to soften. She wasn't quite the warmest person around, but she no longer flinched when someone offered her a snack or invited her to join a card game. Elfman remained a shy kid who flinched often—much to Wakaba's amusement.

Kai, meanwhile, continued with his routine: morning reading, afternoon training, and the occasional duel with Natsu. The guild considered him a bit of a mystery: six years old, quiet, eerily observant, and way too skilled in a fight for his age.

One late afternoon, the guild hall was unusually noisy—and that was saying something.

"I'M TELLING YOU, ICE-MAKE IS WAY COOLER THAN FIRE!" Gray shouted from atop a table.

"COOL? FIRE'S LITERALLY HOTTER, YOU STRIPPER!" Natsu roared back, baring his teeth.

The usual bickering reached a boiling point, drawing laughter and groans in equal measure.

"Oh no," Levy sighed, ducking behind a pillar.

Erza, dressed in her light armor, marched over and cracked her knuckles. "Both of you, enough! We do not destroy furniture during arguments."

"Uh oh," Natsu said.

Gray muttered, "We're dead."

Before Erza could fully enforce order, a voice chimed in from the back.

"Oh please," Mirajane said, arms folded. "You act like the boss, but you're just a kid playing knight."

Erza turned with an angry expression. "What did you say?"

"You heard me," Mira smirked. "You act like you own the place."

Natsu, sensing potential trouble, decided to fan the flames. "Wait, wait! If we fight, it's a problem—but they fight, it's totally fine?" Then his grin turned wicked. "Bet neither of you could beat Kai."

Erza and Mirajane blinked. "What?"

Kai, who had been quietly reading in the corner with his enchanted glasses, looked up. "Hold on, what did I do?"

Erza and Mirajane approached Kai, dragging him toward the lakeside for a fight.

Wakaba grinned. "A three-way showdown, huh? Now that sounds like entertainment."

Before Kai could object, the crowd had already gathered near the lakeside, and he found himself standing opposite Mira and Erza. Cheers erupted, drinks were set down, and popcorn mysteriously appeared.

Erza and Mirajane stepped forward.

Kai stood in the middle, his book still in hand.

"Can I at least finish the chapter first?"

Mira cracked her knuckles, her magic sparking. "Only if you can read while dodging."

Erza started in her Heart Kreuz Armor: quick and nimble. She dashed forward, leading with a flying kick aimed at Kai. He ducked, sliding under her leg and grinning as he twisted away.

"That all you got?"

Mirajane responded by activating her Take Over magic. A white aura exploded around her as claws replaced her hands and horns curled from her head. Her partial Satan Soul transformation was still raw but immensely powerful.

"Let me show you what real magic looks like!" she roared, launching a barrage of shadowy projectiles. Kai jumped back, using bursts of flame from his feet to avoid being hit directly.

"Alright," he muttered, "guess this is happening."

Kai decided to test some new techniques he'd been brainstorming; after all, there was no better time than in a battle.

He clapped his hands together. Magma Dragon Slayer Magic: Ash Veil.

A black smog burst from his body, spreading across the floor like a living shadow. The area quickly filled with smoke, obscuring vision.

"Tch!" Erza snapped. "Switching."

Her armor shifted to Flight Armor, increasing her agility. She zipped through the smoke, slashing at every movement. Mirajane leapt above, blasting shadow bolts through the cloud to try to pin Kai down.

From the smoke, glowing fireballs emerged.

"Magma Dragon Slayer Magic: Scorched Balls!"

Small magma-filled fireballs launched rapidly from Kai's hands. They weren't powerful but were disruptive enough to force both girls to move erratically.

"He's controlling the battlefield," Erza growled.

"Not for long," Mira hissed.

The smoke began to thin. Erza switched to Heaven's Wheel Armor, swords orbiting her like a cyclone, launching a dozen at once.

Kai activated his Eye.

There.

He twisted, wove, and blocked only the necessary swords with bursts of earth magic from his hands.

Mirajane lunged from behind, claws aiming for his shoulder. Kai spun and coated his arm in molten rock.

Earth Dragon Slayer Magic: Seismic Wave!

The ground shook as earth surged forward like a sea wave, knocking both opponents back.

"Alright," Kai muttered, breathing harder. "Let's try a combo."

He slammed both hands into the ground.

Magma Dragon Slayer Magic: Magma Terrain!

The ground cracked as magma erupted in a grid pattern, forcing his opponents to retreat or fly away.

The area around the lakeside looked scorched.

Mirajane took to the air. Erza switched again, trying Black Wing Armor for raw power.

They both dove at Kai.

"I got him!"

"No, I got him!"

Their attacks collided mid-air, clashing before reaching Kai. The shockwave knocked all three of them back.

Kai coughed. "Okay... that could've really injured someone."

In the final exchange, Erza launched her last few swords while Mira used a mini-beam of Satan Soul energy.

Kai activated his Eye again, reading the timing.

Now.

He ducked, rolled, and sent a plume of magma directly between them, separating the girls. Then he pounced on Mira, delivering a firm but non-lethal blow to her stomach by coating his arm in earth. She staggered. Erza rushed in, but Kai sidestepped and tapped her armor with a magma-coated palm, heating it enough to make her drop her blade.

And just like that, the match ended.

Everyone stared in stunned silence.

Kai stood in the middle, panting, his clothes scorched at the edges.

Erza was on one knee, Mirajane sitting and rubbing her ribs.

"Did... did the six-year-old just win?" Macao asked.

"I think so," Wakaba said, eyes wide.

Mira blinked, then let out a laugh. "You sneaky little brat."

Erza looked at Kai with a mix of frustration and respect. "You're stronger than I expected."

Kai, still catching his breath, simply shrugged. "So were you both."

Natsu whooped, "That was AWESOME! Again! Again!"

Kai flopped onto the floor. "Nope. Book time."

As the guild cheered and laughed, Makarov watched from above, smiling.

Fairy Tail's youngest members were already legends in the making.
