Chapter 142, Episode 142
[The Heaven of Origin — The 33rd Sage]
[Isaac's knees buckled the moment the pillar's glow steadied, and he didn't fight it, dropping straight to the training ground's stone floor, chest heaving]
Isaac: Thirty-three.
[Quinn, collapsing beside him with considerably less grace than usual]
Quonn: Thirty-three.
Isaac: Two more.
Quinn: Don't say it like that's easy.
Isaac: Wasn't trying to.
[They lay there for a long moment, both staring up at the golden, ever-present sky, breathing hard, every muscle in both of their bodies past the point of protesting and settling instead into total, wrung-out exhaustion.]
[Yuhwang approached from the ring's edge, expression carrying something close to genuine pride, though he kept it carefully restrained]
Yuhwang: You've surpassed what I believed possible in this timeframe. Both of you.
[Isaac, not lifting his head]
Issac: Feels like it, Your Majesty.
Yuhwang: The Thirty-Third Sage — Transcendence — breaks most who attempt it. You did not break. You simply bent further than either of you believed your own limits allowed, and held.
Quinn: Barely.
Yuhwang: Barely is still holding.
[They pushed through the exhaustion, resting only long enough to breathe properly again, and returned to the ring for what remained]
[The Thirty-Fourth Sage — Unity — asked something quieter than the trials before it]
[Simply sitting, together, in complete stillness, and recognizing, honestly, that everything either of them had built across the past month existed for people who would never know their names]
Isaac: This one's easier.
Quinn: Don't jinx it.
Isaac: I mean it. After thirty-three Sages of nearly dying, this feels like a breath.
[Yuhwang, watching from the ring's edge, allowed himself the faintest smile.]
Yuhwang: That's precisely the point. Unity should feel like relief. If it feels like struggle, you haven't yet understood what you're protecting.
[The pillar for the Thirty-Fourth Sage lit almost gently, in contrast to everything before it, and Isaac and Quinn sat together in the quiet for a long while after, neither of them in any hurry to move]
Isaac: One left.
Quinn: One left.... Issac!!!
[He looked over at her — bruised, exhausted, dust and dried sweat streaked across her face, and somehow, despite all of it, the same steady, unshakeable presence she'd carried since the day she'd first told him she wanted to be his girlfriend.]
Isaac: We're actually going to finish this... hold on tight
Quinn: We were always going to finish this.
Isaac: You sound very sure.
Quinn: I am very sure. You don't drag me across a continent to find your mother and then let a little thing like ancient cosmic cultivation stop you.
[Isaac laughed, tired and genuine, and reached over to bump his fist against hers.]
Isaac: Fair point.
[Quinn, bumping it back]
Quinn: Always is.
[Yuhwang watched the exchange with quiet satisfaction, and then, unexpectedly, raised a hand]
Yuhwang: Not today.
[Isaac blinked, confused.]
Isaac: The Thirty-Fifth—
Yuhwang: Waits until you're not running on fumes. The Origin Sage deserves you arriving whole, not exhausted. I'm giving you both a few days. Rest. Explore what's around you. You've earned that much before the final trial.
[Isaac and Quinn exchanged a look — the specific, mutual disbelief of two people who hadn't expected mercy at this stage and were now, cautiously, deeply grateful for it.]
Isaac: Thank you, Your Majesty. Genuinely. For all of it.
Quinn: We wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to this without you.
Yuhwang: You'd be surprised what you're capable of without guidance. But I appreciate the sentiment. Go. Rest. The Origin Sage will still be waiting when you return.
Issac: Alright your Majesty, Later!!
[They wandered together through gardens that held images instead of water, past mountains that were concepts given shape, the two of them walking slower than usual, savoring the specific quiet of having nothing urgent left to push through for the moment]
Isaac: You ever think about what comes after all this?
Quinn: After the training?
Isaac: After everything. The war. The Sages. Whatever's still coming that we don't know about yet.
[Quinn was quiet for a moment, looking out at the golden horizon.]
Quinn: I think about it a lot, actually.
Isaac: And?
Quinn: And I want you in all of it, where things are exploding. The boring parts too. Waking up in the same place. Actual meals that aren't eaten between fights. I want to live with you. Properly. Whatever that ends up looking like.
[She glanced at him, something soft and a little nervous crossing her face despite everything they'd already survived together]
Issac: I see.... Queen of Dragons..
[Isaac stopped walking.]
Isaac: You mean that.
Quinn: I wouldn't say it otherwise.
[He was quiet for a moment, and then, carefully, took her hand.]
Isaac: I want that too. All of it. The boring parts especially.
Quinn: Even marriage? Eventually?
Isaac: Especially that.
[She went bright red, despite everything they'd already been through together, and laughed, leaning into him.]
Quinn: You're not even nervous saying that.
Isaac: I've fought the King of the Multiverse. Marriage doesn't really register as scary after that.
Quinn: That's a very Isaac way to be romantic.
Isaac: I contain multitudes.
Quinn: You really don't.
[They kept walking, hand in hand, the golden light of the Heaven of Origin settling warm around them.]
[Chloe found them later, sitting near one of the reflecting pools, and settled down beside them without ceremony]
Chloe: You two look happy.
Isaac: We are.
Chloe: Good. I spent seven years hoping I'd get to see you happy again someday. I wasn't expecting it to come with quite this much cosmic significance attached, but I'll take it.
Isaac: Sorry for the scale of it, Mom.
Chloe: Don't apologize. I raised you to be extraordinary. I just didn't expect *this* extraordinary. Have you told her yet? About what you're planning, once the training's finished?"
Isaac: Not yet.
Quinn: Told me what?
[Isaac glanced at his mother, who simply raised an eyebrow, clearly leaving the moment entirely to him.]
Isaac: Once this is done — the Sages, whatever comes after — I want to build something. Somewhere. A real place, not just a guild hall or a war camp. Somewhere with you in it.
Quinn: You're proposing a house before you're proposing marriage.
Isaac: I'm proposing the house so the marriage has somewhere to happen.
[Quinn laughed, and Chloe, watching the two of them, felt something settle warm and certain in her chest — the specific, quiet joy of a mother who had gotten her son back and was now watching him build something she'd never fully dared hope for during the seven long years she'd spent searching.]
[Meanwhile at The Wrath of End World — Peace]
[The chamber, hours after the brawl had finally settled, looked considerably less like a battlefield and considerably more like what it had originally been built to be — a hall of governance, however uneasy the governance currently felt]
[Michael sat back on his throne, bruised, humbled, but no longer carrying the open hostility he'd walked in with]
Michael: You've made your point, Founder.
Leo: Wasn't really trying to make a point. You kept escalating things.
Michael: Fair. I did.
[He rose, crossing the space between them, and extended a hand — the specific, deliberate gesture of someone choosing, carefully, to close a chapter rather than continue it.]
Michael: I think we've established, thoroughly, that force isn't going to settle this the way I originally intended. I'd rather build something functional than keep losing Demon Kings to a fight none of us are winning.
[Leo, taking the offered hand]
Leo: I can work with that.
[They shook, and something in the chamber's tension finally, genuinely eased.]
[Moros, still recovering from the earlier neutralization, stepped forward, arms crossed, expression carrying grudging, honest respect]
Moros: For what it's worth, you possess such tremendous amount of power... what you did to the five of us wasn't luck, and it wasn't a fluke. You earned that founder's title the hard way, twice over, once in whatever ancient era built the throne and once today.
Leo: Appreciate that.
[Ishtaria, beside him, nodding slowly]
Ishtaria: The bloodline holds. That much is settled.
[Shura, arms still crossed, though his earlier confidence had cooled into something more measured]
Shura: I'd still like a proper rematch someday. Not like this. Something planned.
Leo: I'm always up for that.
[Belial, quiet as ever, simply inclined his head — the closest thing to agreement he seemed inclined to offer]
Malphasia: Your dragons, though. I want to know more about those.
[Tiamat, from nearby, smiling faintly]
Tiamat: Perhaps another time.
[The Manipulator, standing near the chamber's edge, watched the reconciliation unfold with quiet, calculating satisfaction, and when Leo glanced his way, something passed between them that didn't need words]
Leo: You're staying?
The Manipulator: For a while. Someone should make sure this peace actually holds instead of quietly collapsing the moment you leave. I'm well suited for that particular job.
Leo: Makes sense.
The Manipulator: Besides. I've got a rematch owed to Siriusniyo, once the timing's right. No weapons, source against source. I'd rather handle that closer to home.
Leo: Good luck with that.
The Manipulator: I won't need it. But I'll take the sentiment.
[Leo smiled, and the two of them exchanged a brief, genuine nod — the specific, understated farewell of people who trusted each other enough not to need anything more dramatic.]
[Laxcarseel, Pandorami, Tiamat, and Karnak gathered near Leo as the chamber's remaining Demon Kings began, gradually, to disperse — some still wary, some genuinely thawing, all of them, at minimum, no longer actively hostile]
Michael: Before you go, Founder.
Leo: Yeah?
Michael: I meant what I said. This is a start, There will be more to discuss — the throne, the hierarchy's future, what your bloodline's return actually means for everyone beneath it. But I'd rather discuss it as something closer to equals than as conqueror and conquest.
Leo: I can work with that too.
Michael: Good Founder
[He inclined his head, and Leo returned the gesture, the two of them settling into something that wasn't quite friendship, but was, at minimum, honest.]
[Pandorami raised a hand, and a wide, shimmering portal tore open at the chamber's far end, the familiar, warm light of the Eastern World visible on the other side]
Pandorami: Faster route home, my Lord. Figured you'd want to skip the long way after all that.
Leo: Appreciate it.
Laxcarseel: Ready?
Leo: Ready.
[He looked back one final time — at Michael, at Moros and Ishtaria and the others, at the chamber that had gone from open war to something resembling peace in the space of a single, exhausting day — and stepped through the portal, his subordinates following close behind.]
[Back at the Eastern World — Home Again]
[The plaza was already alive with anticipation by the time the portal opened, word having spread quickly through whatever channel the Guardians used to track their lord's movements, and the moment Leo stepped through, the response was immediate]
[Luna reached him first, crossing the distance at a dead run, and the hug that followed nearly took both of them off their feet]
Luna: You're back.
Leo: Told you I would be.
Luna: You always say that. Doesn't make it less terrifying every single time.
[She pulled back just enough to look at him properly, checking for injuries with the specific, practiced thoroughness she'd developed across an entire war.]
Luna: You're bruised.
Leo: Founder versus Creator. Comes with the territory.
Luna: You fought the *Creator of all Demons.*
Leo: And made peace with him afterward. Balances out... better than been killed
[She shook her head, exasperated and relieved in equal measure, and kissed him properly this time, the plaza around them erupting into warm, genuine applause from every direction.]
[Jeannette approached next, along with Martha, Antoinette, and the rest of the Guardians who'd stayed behind, all of them settling into the easy, relieved rhythm of a household welcoming its center back]
Jeannette: My Lord. Everything held here. No demon leaks, no incidents worth reporting.
Leo: Good work.
Antoinette: The dragons look pleased with themselves.
Tiamat: We had good reason to be.
Karnak: Our lord fought the Founder's own creator to a standstill and walked away with a peace treaty instead of a war. That's worth being pleased about.
[The gathered species — goblins, slimes, beast-folk, the whole sprawling, vibrant population of the Eastern World — pressed closer, curious, warm, genuinely happy to have their lord standing among them again.]
[A young goblin child tugged at Leo's sleeve, wide-eyed]
Child: Lord Leo, did you really fight a Demon Creator?
[Leo, crouching down to her level, smiling]
Leo: I did. And you know what? We're friends now. Mostly.
Child: That's so cool.
Leo: It really was.
[Luna slipped her hand into his as the celebration settled into something looser, warmer, the specific ease of a community that had learned, across a long war, exactly how to appreciate a quiet, uneventful evening when one finally arrived]
Luna: So. Peaceful hierarchy. Demon Kings shaking your hand. Ancient dragons at your side. Just another Tuesday for you, apparently.
Leo: Pretty much.
Luna: I love you, and you're completely insane.
Leo: I love you too.
[The plaza settled into warm, golden evening light, the Eastern World's people carrying on with their celebration long into the night, and for the first time in what felt like a very long stretch of constant motion, everything, genuinely, was quiet.]
## [The Eastern World — Sundown]
[The sun dipped low over the capital, painting the crystal-and-living-wood buildings in warm amber, and across the city, the specific, joyful chaos of festival preparation kicked into motion — lanterns strung between rooftops, long tables dragged into the plaza, the smell of roasting food beginning to drift through every street]
[It was, Leo thought, watching it all unfold, a strange kind of miracle]
[This world had markets now. Bookshops that sold ancient tomes and modest primers alike, side by side, A hospital, staffed by healers of a dozen different species, that treated goblin and dwarf and wolf-clan child with the same careful attention. A school, where young slimes learned alongside beast-folk cubs, where nobody was mocked for what they didn't yet understand]
[None of it had existed when he'd arrived here at twelve, grieving, alone, mocked by kids who'd decided a reincarnated boy with a strange source in his chest was something to be afraid of rather than something to know]
[He'd built all of this instead of that]
[Luna slipped her hand into his, watching the same scene]
Luna: You've got that look again.
Leo: What look?
Luna: The one where you're thinking about something you're not going to say out loud unless I ask.
[He glanced at her, and something in his expression softened.]
Leo: Just thinking about how far this place has come. From nothing.
Luna: From nothing, and from you.
Leo: Same thing, mostly.
[She squeezed his hand, and they made their way toward the market together as the festival began properly around them.]
9The subordinates had traded their formal armor and ceremonial marks for plain, comfortable clothes, the specific relief of people finally allowed to simply exist rather than perform readiness]
[Pandorami and Laxcarseel wandered the stalls together, as they always did, examining a vendor's table of enchanted trinkets with matched, quiet interest]
Laxcarseel: This one claims to ward off bad luck.
Pandorami: Does it work?
[Laxcarseel]
Laxcarseel: Absolutely not. But I like the craftsmanship.
Pandorami: Buy it anyway?
Laxcarseel: Obviously.
[Martha and Antoinette drifted from stall to stall nearby, Antoinette pausing at nearly every food vendor to check in on how business was going, genuinely, warmly interested in every small vendor's day]
Antoinette: How's the leg healing, Master Dorlan?
Dorlan: Much better, thanks to you, ma'am.
Antoinette: Good. Don't overwork it just because the festival's exciting.
[Martha, watching her fondly]
Martha: You know literally everyone in this city.. at this point
Antoinette: Someone has to.
[Infinte and Jairulioyo had settled near a game booth, where a local goblin child had challenged Jairulioyo to a rigged ring-toss]
Jairulioyo: I'm fairly certain this game is unwinnable.
Infinte: It is. I calculated the odds while you were losing your third round.
Jairulioyo: You could've told me that before round one.
Infinte: Where's the fun in that.
[The goblin child cackled, delighted, as Jairulioyo lost a fourth ring in a row.]
[Jeannette and Lilura had claimed a spot near the plaza's center, Lilura already deep into an animated story about something that had happened three festivals ago, Jeannette listening with the specific patient amusement she reserved only for her]
Lilura: —and THEN, and this is the best part, the goat somehow got INTO the bakery, and—
Jeannette: I remember. I was there.
Lilura: I know, I just like telling it.
Jeannette: You tell it every year.
Lilura: Every good story deserves an annual retelling.
[Jeannette, despite herself, laughed]
[Tiamat and Karnak, still adjusting to their human forms, approached a food stall with the careful, curious hesitation of beings who had spent millennia surviving on raw elemental essence rather than anything resembling a meal]
Tiamat: What is this.
Vendor: Skewered spiced meat, ma'am. Local specialty.
Karnak: We've never eaten anything like this.
Fenn: ...Ever..
Tiamat: We're older than eating, mostly.
[The vendor, entirely unbothered by this claim, simply handed them each a skewer.]
Fenn: Well. First time for everything.
[Tiamat took a bite, and her eyes went wide.]
Tiamat: That's — that's incredible.
[Karnak, following suit, nodding slowly, genuine wonder crossing his face]
Karnak: Millennia of existence, and I've been missing this the entire time.
Tiamat: We're getting five more.
Fenn: Coming right up.
[WraithLord lingered near the edge of the plaza for a while, mask still in place, watching the festival with the specific, careful stillness of someone who hadn't been part of something like this in longer than he could properly remember]
[A young beast-folk girl, maybe six years old, wandered over without any apparent fear at all]
Girl: Are you sad?
WraithLord: ...No. Just out of practice.
Girl: Out of practice at what?
WraithLord: Fun.
Girl: That's easy. Come on... mister!!
[She grabbed his hand — a small, unbothered gesture that clearly startled him more than any battle he'd fought in his hundred years guarding the dungeon — and dragged him toward the game booths.]
[He let her.]
[It was, genuinely, the most fun he'd had in ages.]
[Leo, wandering the market with Luna, made the fatal mistake of trying to sneak an extra portion of fried dough from a dessert stall without waiting his turn in line]
]Jeannette's voice cut across the plaza with the specific, practiced authority of a Grand Marshal who missed nothing]
Jeannette: Leo Sebastián.
[Leo froze mid-reach, dough halfway to his mouth.]
Leo: ...Yes?
Jeannette: Did you just cut the line.
Leo: Define 'cut.'
Jeannette: The definition where you walked past six children waiting patiently and took the last portion for yourself.
[Leo, visibly shrinking under her gaze, set the dough back down with the specific guilt of a child caught red-handed.]
Leo: I was going to share it.
Jeannette: With whom.
Leo: ....Luna.
[Luna, deadpan]
Luna: I don't remember agreeing to that."
Jeannette: Give it back. Let the children have it.
Leo: Yes, ma'am.
[He handed it over immediately, and Antoinette, arriving just in time to catch the tail end of the exchange, crossed her arms with an expression that promised further commentary.]
Antoinette: Our Lord, defeated an ancient dragon in death itself, faced down the Creator of all Demons, and cannot resist stealing dessert from children.
Leo: That's — a very specific and unflattering summary.
Antoinette: It's an accurate one.
[Nearby, Infinte, Jairulioyo, Laxcarseel, Lilura, Martha, and Pandorami had all turned to watch, and the collective laughter that followed was loud enough to draw attention from three separate stalls.]
Jairulioyo: The Founder of all Demonkind, scared of two women with a scolding tone.
Leo: They're very intimidating!
Laxcarseel: You faced Voriath without flinching.
Leo: Voriath didn't have that *specific* tone Jeannette gets.
[Martha, wiping a tear from laughing]
Martha: This is the funniest thing I've seen all week.
Pandorami: Every single time. It never stops being funny.
[Leo, red-faced, retreated toward Luna, who was doing an extremely poor job of hiding her own laughter.]
Leo: You could've defended me.
Luna: You stole dessert from children.
Leo: In my defense—
Luna: There is no defense.
[He sighed, dramatically, and Luna finally laughed properly, looping her arm through his and steering him away from the scene of the crime.]
Luna: Come on. Let's go find you dessert you're actually allowed to eat.
Leo: What–
[The festival carried on late into the night, the plaza glowing warm with lantern light, laughter and music drifting through every street — and eventually, quietly, Leo and Luna slipped away from it together, finding their way to a quiet overlook at the edge of the capital where the noise faded into something softer, more distant]
[They sat side by side, looking out over the lit-up city below]
Luna: This is beautiful.
Leo: You're beautiful.
Luna: That was smooth. Almost too smooth. Where'd you learn that.
Leo: Made it up just now.
Luna: I believe you.
[She leaned her head against his shoulder, and for a long moment neither of them said anything, simply existing together in the quiet.]
Luna: Leo.
Leo: Yeah?
Luna: I meant what I said, back at the barrier. Everything I've felt since. I know we've said it plenty of times since then, but I want you to know I mean it more every single time.
Leo: I know.
Luna: Do you?
Leo: I feel the exact same thing every time I say it back. So yeah. I know.
[He took her hand, lacing his fingers through hers, and looked out at the city he'd built from grief and turned into something worth this exact moment.]
Leo: I built all of this not knowing if it would ever amount to anything. And somewhere along the way, you became the reason it feels like it did.
[Luna's breath caught slightly, and she looked up at him, something soft and vulnerable crossing her face.]
Luna: That's the least smooth and most genuine thing you've said all night.
Leo: Guess I'm better at genuine than smooth.
Luna: I like genuine better.
[She leaned in, and the kiss that followed was slow, unhurried, entirely unlike any of the earlier ones — no crowd, no crisis, no war looming in the background, just the two of them, quiet and certain, under a sky full of stars neither of them needed to fight for tonight.]
[When they finally broke apart, Luna rested her forehead against his, smiling.]
Luna: Marry me someday.
Leo: Was that a question or a demand?
Luna: Little of both.
Leo: Then yes. Someday. Whenever things finally slow down enough to actually plan it properly.
Luna: That could be a while.
Leo: I've got the time. I've got you. I'm not in a rush about the rest.
[She smiled, settling back against him, and the two of them sat together at the quiet edge of the city, the distant sound of the festival still drifting faintly on the night air, entirely, completely content.]
To be continued...
