Chapter 3 - 3.Fire and Brimstone

Paul was thinking in overdrive, he saw what this strange yellow rock was able to do, and how effective it was against kobolds with their sensitive hearing. But how should he use it, he could just throw it like his shield but that may backfire like last time.

"If i just had a gun!" Paul said to himself as he was looking around when his eyes fell on the Valkyries warhorn. "Valkyrie Hildegard! Please borrow me your horn!" Paul shouted as he ran towards Hildegard. Hildegard had a strange look on her face, but seeing thousands of warriors on the battlefield gave her enough experience to know when she should just trust those warriors.

So Paul received the warhorn of a Valkyrie, an honor not many mortals experienced in their existence. But what Paul did next astonished everyone even the poor Valkyrie Hildegard as she watched Paul hitting her treasured warhorn with a stone he found on the ground.

With tears in her eyes Hildegard watched Paul seemingly destroy her graduation gift she received when she graduated from the Valkyrie academy. But Paul didn´t notice anything he was to concentrated on his task. Carefully he straightened the warhorn only the mouthpiece wasn´t straightened he even bend it in a right angle upwards. Next Paul grabbed a waraxe out of a warriors hand and removed its head leaving him with the wooden handle, he ripped two strips of cloth out of his clothes and bound the straightened horn to the wooden handle.

Next Paul carefully used the axehead to shave tiny bits of the strange yellow rock into the warhorn and tapped his improvised blunderbuss on the ground to compact it. Paul also filled small metal fragments and some stones into horn and stuffed another piece of cloth into it too. The only thing left was shaving a tiny amount of his makeshift gunpowder into the mouthpiece of the horn, while Hildegard watched him with curious eyes.

But Paul just barely finished his makeshift blunderbuss before the giant kobold managed to reach him. But no matter how grim the situation seemed, Paul felt unusually confident with a gun in his hands. He started aiming at his enemy that was advancing towards him and he waited for the right moment.

The kobold started swinging his mace towards Paul when struck the horns mouthpiece with the axehead. *BANG* His gun breathed fire and smoke, metal fragments and stone were flying toward his opponent, the kobolds chest got riddled with small holes that started bleeding. The loud noise, the fire and the fragments caused the kobold to lose his footing as he stumbled backwards, Paul threw his now useless gun away and charged the kobold with a sword in hand. He mercilessly stabbed into the groin of the monster, he twisted his blade and while the kobold shrieked in pain and leaned forward, Paul thrust his sword into the monsters throat finally killing it.

Paul was breathing heaviely when he noticed that the battlefield was awfully quiet. After the loud shot of Pauls makeshift weapon everyone was watching him killing the kobold alpha, several male warriors groaning when Paul stabbed the groin of the monster. Paul felt embarassed, but he knew that they had to take the advantage he created by killing the leader.

"WARRIORS CHARGE!" Paul yelled from the top of his lungs with his sword raised to the sky.

And the Warriors answered, whith a battlecry on their lips the charged into the lines of monsters slaughtering dozens of them before they could react. The death of their leader and warriors of Valhalla slaughtering them was to much for the army of kobolds and they started a headless retreat, the battle was won.

Paul found a big stone to sit on as the rush of the battle slowly faded, every muscle and bone in his body started aching. After a short while Paul raised his head and to his surprise he was surrounded by the warriors of valhalla. As soon as the saw that Paul noticed them the started pounding their chest with their right arm, saluting his battle prowess.

"The warrior that throws fire and smoke!"

"The warrior that killed the alpha!"

"The warrior that wields explosions!"

The warriors of valhalla gave him nicknames while cheering him, most of them sounded honorable, but some of them were weird and Paul wanted to sink into the ground when he heard them.

"The warrior that made a Vakylrie cry!"

"The warrior that goes for the crown jewels!"

"The most brutal warrior!"

Paul was quite embarassed when suddenly the Valkyrie Hildegard came to him looking equally embarrassed with a red face. "i didn´t cry..." Valkyrie Hildegard whispered to herself before talking to Paul.

"Exalted Warrior you have accumelated many merits this battle. State your name." Hildegard said to Paul.

"My name is Paul!" Paul quickly answered. "Warrior Paul in recognition of your merits you have earned the name Brimstone. You have my respect Paul Brimstone! May my blessing accompany you!" Hildegard said as she kissed his forehead.

"Paul Brimstone!"

"The warrior that has been blessed by a valkyrie!"

"The warrior that made a Valkyrie cry!" The Warriors cheered once again as Hildegard´s face once again turned red and she hurriedly left the battlefield. Paul that was also embarrassed didn´t have the chance to quietly escape, the warriors grabbed him and carried him back to a longhouse to have a feast.

Paul was placed on the seat of honor at the head of the table finding himself puzzled where the meat infront of him and the tankard of mead in his hand came from. But after a while he didn´t care anymore, he went to battle and survived, atleast this time, so Paul drank and ate his fill.

Just when Paul asked himself where he would sleep tonight a figure that nobody could ignore entered the Longhouse...
