Chapter 12 - The One Who Stayed

The figure just stood there, right in front of the brunt house. Elzan gets confused about it. Many theories have appeared in his mind. He takes a look at his pocket watch. It is 4 o'clock sharp. This also made him concerned. As he continues watching, the Revenant then takes a knee, facing lower at the ground.

Time has passed, but the Revenant is still in the same position and hasn't moved an inch. Still kneeling. Still silent. Elzan keeps his eyes on the figure and looks at his pocket watch once again. It is 4:17. Nearly 20 minutes have passed.

Suddenly, the figure slowly lifted its head. Not fully, but just enough to face the air above the ground, and then it slowly gets up, its hand moving slowly, carefully brushing the dirt.

Elzan (thinking): "What was he doing? Was he praying? To whom?"

Then, out of the blue, the Revenant collapses on the ground. Elzan flinched when he saw the Revenant collapse. For a moment, he froze, unsure of what to do.

He slowly climbs down from the tree and watches from afar, thinking whether he should check close up or not. He walks back and forth, trying to make a decision. He glances around, making sure no one's in the area.

Taking a cautious step forward, he approaches closer to the collapsed figure. His heart races in nervousness as he gets closer to the figure.

He slowly takes a knee and places his trembling hand on the figure's shoulder armour. There is no response. He then places his hand on the waist. He can sense that the nerves are still active, but the rate is slow.

He then noticed blood stains on its stomach area. In hesitation, he slowly lifts the armour, and surprisingly, there is a slash wound around six inches on its stomach.

Elzan's breath caught in his throat. With this wound, anyone else would have been long dead. But somehow, the Revenant was still clinging to life.

Elzan (thinking): "How is he even alive after this…?"

The blood wasn't fresh. It had already started to clot around the edges, but the wound was clearly draining the last of the Revenant's strength. If He left without doing anything, that'd be wrong, especially after what it did for him the day before.

Without thinking twice, he tore a piece of cloth from his own sleeve and gently pressed it against the wound, hoping at least to slow any more bleeding.

Elzan: "Hang in there… I'll figure a way…"

Elzan speaks softly, adjusting his grip as he slung the Revenant's arm over his shoulders.

Elzan: "Good grief, he's pretty heavy…"

He stumbled a bit but managed to stay on his feet. Step by step, he dragged the wounded figure towards the woods. He searches for the a shatter place. He sees a nearby shallow cave. He quickly gets to the place and eased the Revenant down against the wall, careful not to worsen the wound. The cave wasn't large, but it was hidden and dry enough for now.

Elzan knelt beside the Revenant, wiping the sweat from his forehead.

Elzan: "Alright… Calm down. You know what to do."

Memories of his grandmother teaching him how to dress wounds flashed through his mind. She used to be a nurse back in the old days. Now in this situation, this has come in handy.

He tore a strip from his cloak, working quickly. His hands moved with practiced care as he cleaned around the slash, wincing at the sight of dried and fresh blood. He checked the pulse again, faint, but there.

Elzan: "You'll be fine… Just hold on."

He reached into his pouch, pulling out a small bundle of herbs his grandmother always made him carry "just in case." He chewed some into a paste and pressed it gently onto the wound before binding it tightly with the cloth. It was a bit demanding to do all the tasks while the armour was still in the way. He tried to take it off but he had no clue of how to unbuckle the armour plates, yet he still managed slightly.

After he had finished, he sat back, exhausted, but relieved. He watches the unconscious figure and wonders what it might have gone through. His eyes get heavy due to the exhaustion. He slowly closes his eyes and falls asleep.

Around 30 minutes had passed, and Elzan woke up from his nap. He glances at the Revenant, still unconscious, but is now breathing in steady. Elzan let out a small sigh of relief.

Elzan: "Phew… The herbs are doing their job."

He then gets up to change the cloth he put on the Revenant. When he was about to reach for it, his hand was grabbed by the figure. Elzan startled from the sudden grip. He gasped, instinctively trying to pull away but the strength was unmatched.
