...And the 7th Year Student
The fireplace at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place burst into life, as emerald flames erupted in the middle of the large stone hearth. Hermione Granger stepped out followed by Matt Santini as Harry Potter looked up from his morning coffee.
"Harry!" Hermione exclaimed as he stood and she embraced him. Harry returned the hug and then shook hands with Matt as the two now fully qualified wizards shared a smile.
"Morning Hermione, are you two settling into your new place alright?" Harry asked.
"Yes, we are, thanks for asking!" Hermione said and joined Harry at the table. Matt moved over to the refrigerator and the cupboards. With a wave of his wand, a griddle and a skillet descended to the stovetop. Another flick and milk, eggs, and bacon popped out of the fridge as mixing utensils quickly gathered and began to mix flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar into a bowl.
"You know, I could have done that." Harry offered.
"Bah! It's alright. It's half the reason you asked us for breakfast, is it not? Besides, cooking relaxes me." Matt replied with a grin as he set the bacon in a frying pan to cook.
"Is that Hermione and Matt?" Ginny asked, peeking her red head around the corner of the kitchen.
"Hey Gin! How are you?" Matt asked as the bacon turned itself over and the milk, egg, and vanilla mixture added themselves to the mixing bowl of dry ingredients.
"I'm really good, sore but good." She said, joining them.
"I heard you made a professional team Ginny, which one got you?" Hermione asked.
"The Holyhead Harpies." Ginny beamed proudly.
"Alright! Congratulations!" Matt exclaimed as he lifted the first batch of bacon out of the frying pan and added the other half of the packet. "I'm glad you held out for the team you wanted."
"Thanks!" Ginny said and sat down at the table. A tapping came at the window and Harry got up to let in a veritable flock of owls. Four identical letters dropped onto the table and the Ministry owls flew out of the open window.
"I wonder what this is all about?" Hermione asked as Matt added the batter to the griddle, which he had put bacon grease on.
"Dunno, hope it's not another Order of Merlin invitation…" Harry said, and Hermione gave him a less than pleased looked. As Matt floated freshly made pancakes and bacon over to the table a knock came at the front door.
"Who uses the front door?" Ginny asked.
"You want me to get it?" Matt asked as he floated over utensils, butter, syrup, and his favorite, peanut butter.
"You don't have to…" Harry said. Matt just shrugged and wandered up to the landing. As they piled their plates with fresh food, they heard Matt's voice echo down the hall.
"Draco Malfoy!? What are you doing here?" his voice was full of confusion.
"Thought I'd stop by, say hello." Draco's familiar drawl replied as they walked back into the kitchen. "Morning Potter, Weasley, Granger." Draco said as he joined them at the table.
"That is a good question. What are you doing here exactly?" Harry asked, suspicious but not angry.
"Wanted to see if you got your letters or not." Draco said as he held up an envelope identical to the ones everyone else had gotten. Matt sat down finally and began to spread peanut butter on his pancakes.
"Eat." Matt said nudging Draco and waved his wand again, a bowl of fruit lofting over to the table. Draco grabbed a Granny Smith apple out of the bowl as the others ate and opened their mail.
"Aren't you going to open yours, Santini?" Draco nudged back, referring to the envelope addressed to him.
"Fine," Matt picked up the letter and tore it open, pulling out the sheaf of parchment.
"Oh, look! It's an invitation!" Hermione said, scanning over the letter.
"It's a Big gala, commemorating the end of the war and Voldemort." Draco explained.
"Matt, this will be a good opportunity for you to really introduce yourself." Hermione said nudging her boyfriend who was sitting next to her.
"Especially with that guest list…" Draco was practically smirking as he watched Matt scan the paper.
"Yeah, I'll say, look at all these people! All of us, my brother, the Minister, even McGonagall!" Ginny said.
"This is something. I just hope it's not a lot of people asking for autographs or a lock of hair or something…" Harry replied grimly.
"Yeah, I'm not going." Matt said firmly after he scanned the guest list and folded the paper under his plate.
"What? What are you talking about? Of course you are, you're going with me, and you are not leaving to go by myself!" Hermione looked shocked.
"Then we'll both skip." Matt said he was not budging from his position. Draco looked like he was having a field day watching Matt's expression and the couple banter. "I do not want to go to this…"
"What's gotten into you all of a sudden? Why on earth do you not want to go to the gala?" Hermione asked.
"This is priceless!" Draco laughed. "I had to see this for myself." He grinned; he was reveling in knowing yet something else the others did not. "I think it's got something to do with this person…" Draco leaned forward and tapped at a name near the bottom of the list.
"Who's Temperance Bonneville?" Hermione wondered.
"My mother…" Matt replied.

Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, and Matt Santini Will Return
Matthew Santini walked through the hall of the Ministry of Magic. His meeting with Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister of Magic, had gone well. He felt like he was in an advantageous position, and he would have a job. He tucked the piece of parchment Minister Shacklebolt had given him into his pocket and smiled as he exited the lift into the atrium. He found Hermione near one of the fireplaces.
"You look happy, everything went well I take it?" she asked.
"Very much so!" Matt said with a grin as he took her hand.
"Mr. Santini!" came a voice. Matt turned and was shocked to see the Minister running after them. "Hello Ms. Granger." Shacklebolt said. "I almost forgot to give you a message. It's from an old friend. He says to stop by the west wing outside the Department of Magical Education. He'll meet you there."
"Thanks, Minister." Matt said and shook Kingsley's hand one last time.
"And old friend?" Hermione asked, confused.
Matt shrugged but the pair followed the minister's instructions. Outside of the Department of Magical Education stretched a long hallway. The corridor was lined with portraits, some were empty, others had their subjects sleeping in their chairs. There were a number of famous Headmasters and Headmistresses, not just of Hogwarts but across the wizarding world. Isolt Sayre was there, although the founder of Ilvermorny's portrait was empty now, as was Nerida Vulchanova, the founder of Durmstrang. Hermione gasped as they walked along the corridor, looking up.
"Professor Dumbledore?!" she was shocked to see her old Headmaster in his portrait. Albus Dumbledore awoke and slowly rose from his seat. Matt looked upon the old wizard, he was tall and thin, with lengthy silver hair and beard. He grinned behind his half-moon spectacles resting on a very crooked nose.
"Hello, Miss Granger. It's a pleasure to see you again." Dumbledore spoke and smiled. "Ah, and you must be Mr. Santini, I've heard about you. You've a friend here who's been filling me in. I think you may want to pay him a visit. He's been waiting, you know." Dumbledore said with a smile and pointed them down the corridor farther.
"Headmaster, it's an honor, truly. I've read all about you, of course." Matt said and grinned at Hermione who was beaming at him.
Dumbledore's image held up his hand with a kindly smile.
"There's no need to be so formal. Unfortunately, as I cannot claim to have taught you, Albus will do fine. However, from what I hear from Professor McGonagall, you have been a credit to Hogwarts."
"Thank you, Albus." Matt said. "Hogwarts was good to me, and it was my home."
"As so many of the students who have walked the halls can claim. But there was another home before Hogwarts, yes?" Matt nodded confirmation to Albus' assertion.
"Very well, I believe there is an unresolved matter your friend wants to discuss with you." Dumbledore said. Matt nodded and began to move further down the corridor, towards a bench. Hermione made to follow him but paused. "And by the way, Miss Granger, congratulations. He's quite the catch." Dumbledore said, a glint in his eye in the portrait.
"Thank you, professor." Hermione said and followed Matt.
Matt paused at the bench and looked up; his eyes widened with shock. Sitting directly above the bench was the portrait of none other than his former Headmaster Leon Morrow. The tall dark Headmaster beamed down at his student.
"Mr. Santini, took you long enough to get here." Morrow said with a smile.
"Headmaster…I-I didn't know!" Matt looked shocked and happy at the same time.
"Relax. I'm not about to give you detention or anything like that. It's just good to see you. I've been keeping an eye on things." The portrait said. Matt looked down and smirked.
"Of course, even now, you can't help but keep your finger on the pulse, can you?"
"Figured this was the place to be, what with my star student here and back to your old tricks I see?" Morrow asked. Matt pulled Hermione closer and the Headmaster's attention drifted to her, momentarily.
"Oh, uh, Headmaster, I'd like you to meet Hermione Granger, my girlfriend." Matt said introducing her. Hermione smiled and gave a small wave.
"It's a pleasure to meet you in person Miss Granger. I've been reading the papers over people's shoulders. Lots of fascinating things you and your friends got up to during the war. You know, one day, you'll be the one they're writing books about."
"Thank you for saying so!" Hermione said and blushed.
"You're welcome, Miss Granger. Well, needless to say, Matthew, I'm proud of you. You did good."
"Thank you, Headmaster."
"I know I promised you that once the whole thing with the castle was over with, and it is, we were done with all the, what did you call it? Spook stuff?"
"Yes, Headmaster, that was my term for it."
"If you'd be willing to indulge me, one more time…"
Matt let out a frustrated sigh. He knew he would not be able to say no to his old Headmaster. Hermione squeezed his hand as if to say she was there for him.
"What is it?" Matt asked.
"I've got one more task for you. It's two small things, shouldn't be too difficult for the American Wonder and the Brightest Witch of Her Age." Morrow said. Matt rolled his eyes. He had come to dislike the term the Daily Prophet had labeled him with, following the skirmish in Hogsmeade. "Your favorite professor, Pat Franks, he's got something that's very very important. And if you get a chance to, tell my daughter, that I love her."
"Sure thing." Matt said and he and Hermione waved goodbye to his former professor and Headmaster. As they passed by Dumbledore's portrait, it was already empty. He was likely back at Hogwarts, talking to McGonagall or sleeping in the chair there.
"So, now what?" Hermione asked as they stepped out of the lift at the atrium.
"I guess we're going to have to go to America." Matt replied.
