Chapter 163 - If You Stay

The next morning didn't begin with anything extraordinary.

There was no particular reason for Aanya to remember it later.

And perhaps that was what made it so beautiful.

She woke to the faint sound of movement outside the room.

For a few seconds, she stayed where she was.

Not because she was tired.

Just because she could.

There was no pain demanding her attention.

No medicine waiting.

No hospital ceiling above her.

No voice telling her to be careful.

She stretched slowly.

Then smiled to herself.

She was okay.

Actually okay.

Aanya got up.

By the time she stepped outside, she found Sagnik standing near the kitchen counter, staring at something in his phone with an expression of concentration that was completely unnecessary for whatever he was doing.

She leaned against the doorway.

"You're awake."

He looked up.

"Obviously."

"Why?"

He stared at her.

"Why what?"

"Why are you awake?"

"It's morning."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

She walked over.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

"You always say nothing when you're doing something."

"I'm checking something."

"That's doing something."

He put his phone down.

"Good morning, Aanya."

She smiled.

"Better."

He looked at her for another second.

Then his eyes moved briefly over her face.

It was automatic.

Aanya noticed.

"You checked."

"What?"

"My face."

"No."

"You did."

"I'm allowed to look at you."

She paused.

Then smiled.

"Yes."

Something about the way she said it made him stop.

Not because the words were unusual.

Because she said them so easily.

As if there was no longer anything to be embarrassed about.

She walked past him.

"Where's Aditi?"

"Asleep."

"Still?"

"Apparently."

Aanya looked toward the room.

Then back at him.

"Should we wake her?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because she'll wake up angry."

Aanya considered that.

"True."

They both laughed quietly.

The day unfolded slowly.

They went out for breakfast.

Not because Aanya needed to.

Because she wanted to.

That difference mattered.

Sagnik still watched her for the first few minutes.

Aanya eventually caught him.

"Stop."

"What?"

"Watching."

"I'm not."

"You are."

He smiled.

"Fine."

She pointed at him.

"Exactly."

He raised both hands.

"Okay."

She laughed.

And that was it.

No argument.

No hospital reminder.

No one telling her to eat slowly.

They simply ate.

Then walked.

Aanya talked about everything that came into her head.

A film she wanted to watch.

Something Aditi had said.

A ridiculous memory from school.

A random person she'd seen earlier.

A question that didn't have an answer.

Sagnik listened.

Sometimes responding.

Sometimes teasing.

Mostly just letting her talk.

At one point, she stopped mid-sentence.

"What?"

He looked at her.

"You went quiet."

"I was listening."

"You always listen."

"Should I stop?"

"No."

She smiled.

"Don't."

He smiled back.

"Okay."

By afternoon, they had ended up at his place.

Aanya took over the couch almost immediately.

Sagnik sat beside her.

She stole his phone.

He took it back.

She stole it again.

He looked at her.

"Seriously?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I can."

He reached for it.

She moved it behind her.

He laughed.

"Aanya."

"No."

"Give it."

"No."

He leaned closer.

She laughed and tried to move away.

"You're cheating."

"How?"

"You're taller."

"That's not cheating."

"It is."

He finally managed to take the phone.

Aanya stared at him.

Then crossed her arms.

"I don't like you."

"Again?"

"Yes."

"You're very consistent."

She tried not to smile.

Failed.

He noticed.

"Got you."

"Shut up."

She leaned into him anyway.

His arm went around her almost automatically.

There was no hesitation anymore.

No question about whether he was allowed.

She rested against his chest.

For several minutes, neither of them said anything.

Then Aanya spoke.

"Sagnik?"

"Hmm?"

"If I become annoying..."

"You already are."

She pinched his side.

He laughed.

"Okay. Sorry."

She smiled.

"But seriously."

"I'm listening."

"If I become really difficult someday..."

He looked down at her.

She was no longer smiling.

"I don't mean now."

"I know."

"I mean someday."

She hesitated.

"If life gets messy again."

He waited.

Aanya's fingers played absently with the fabric of his shirt.

"Will you still stay?"

The question was quiet.

Almost casual.

But Sagnik knew better.

He turned slightly toward her.

"Yes."

She looked up.

"Just like that?"

"Just like that."

"You didn't even think."

"I don't need to."

Something in her face softened.

She leaned closer.

"Good."

A pause.

Then she smiled.

"Because I'm planning to be difficult for a very long time."

He laughed.

"I had a feeling."

She tucked her face against his chest.

His hand moved slowly through her hair.

And this time, neither of them needed to say anything else.

Later, when the sun began lowering, they went outside again.

There was no particular destination.

They simply walked.

Aanya kept close to him.

Sometimes their shoulders touched.

Sometimes their hands brushed.

Eventually, without either of them making a conscious decision, their fingers intertwined.

Aanya looked down.

Then up at him.

Neither commented.

She simply held on tighter.

Sagnik looked at her.

She smiled.

"Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were thinking."

"I always think."

"Then stop."

"I can't."

She laughed.

"You're impossible."

"You're the one holding my hand."

She looked down at their intertwined fingers.

Then back at him.

"Yeah."

A small smile.

"I am."

They kept walking.

And for the first time, neither of them was afraid of what that meant.
