Chapter 152 - One More

The morning of the final examination felt strangely ordinary.

Aanya woke before anyone called her.

For a few moments, she simply lay there.

The room was quiet.

Aditi was still asleep.

The light coming through the curtains was soft.

There was no immediate panic.

No frantic search for notes.

No desperate attempt to remember something she'd forgotten the night before.

Just the quiet knowledge sitting somewhere in the back of her mind.

One more.

She finally got out of bed.

By the time she stepped outside, the campus was already beginning to wake.

Students moved through the corridors with the same familiar nervousness she'd seen every examination morning.

Some were carrying books.

Some were discussing topics.

Some were pretending not to be nervous.

Aanya smiled faintly.

She had become very good at recognizing that particular expression.

She found Sagnik near the entrance.

He was already waiting.

He looked at her.

"Ready?"

She considered lying.

Then smiled.

"Almost."

"That's good enough."

They began walking.

Neither spoke much.

They didn't need to.

They had done this too many times now.

The same walk.

The same building.

The same nervous students.

The same examination hall waiting ahead.

But this time—

There was no next paper after this one.

Aanya wondered if Sagnik was thinking the same thing.

She looked at him.

He glanced back.

"What?"

"Nothing."

He smiled.

"Again?"

"Again."

The examination venue was crowded.

But Aanya didn't feel the same fear she'd felt on the first day.

She was nervous.

Of course.

But beneath it was something steadier.

She had survived the other papers.

She had survived the pain.

The sleepless nights.

The panic.

The days when she thought she wasn't doing enough.

She had made mistakes.

She had corrected them.

She had kept going.

And now there was only one thing left.

She held her notes for a little while longer.

Then closed them.

Sagnik looked at her.

"Done?"

She nodded.

"Done."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Good."

The supervisor called for the students to form their lines.

Aanya looked at him.

He looked at her.

Neither said anything.

They didn't need another goodbye like the first examination.

Instead, Aanya simply held out her hand.

Sagnik took it.

Their fingers intertwined.

One squeeze.

Then they let go.

"See you after."

"See you after."

And this time—

Aanya believed it.

Inside the examination hall, she found her seat.

The same routine.

Admit card.

Pens.

Answer booklet.

Question paper.

The room settled.

The invigilator walked to the front.

Aanya looked down at the blank page.

For a moment, she thought about the first examination.

How terrified she'd been.

How tightly she'd held her pen.

How she'd wondered whether she would be able to get through everything.

She almost laughed.

It felt like another lifetime.

The question papers were distributed.

Aanya turned hers over.

Read the first question.

Then the second.

Then the third.

She smiled faintly.

She knew them.

Not every single one.

But enough.

She picked up her pen.

And began.

Time moved.

She didn't fight it.

She wrote.

Thought.

Turned pages.

Returned to questions.

Crossed out an answer.

Rewrote it.

Checked the clock.

Kept going.

There was no frantic urgency anymore.

Just concentration.

When the final announcement came—

"Pens down."

Aanya stopped.

She looked at the paper.

For a second, she didn't move.

Then she placed her pen on the desk.

It was over.

Actually over.

The answer sheet was collected.

The desk was empty.

She gathered her things.

And walked out.

The corridor outside was filled with noise.

Students were laughing.

Complaining.

Comparing answers.

Already making plans.

Aanya stepped through the doors.

Her eyes immediately searched the crowd.

She found him.

Sagnik was standing near the wall.

Waiting.

Again.

Just like the first time.

Their eyes met.

Aanya smiled.

He smiled back.

He walked toward her.

"How was it?"

She looked at him.

Then looked back toward the examination hall.

"I don't have another one tomorrow."

Sagnik laughed.

"That's not what I asked."

"I know."

She looked at him again.

Then finally said,

"It was good."

He nodded.

"Good."

Aanya exhaled.

A long breath.

The kind she'd been holding for months.

"It's over."

Sagnik's expression softened.

"Yeah."

She smiled.

"It's actually over."

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Aanya laughed.

Not because anything was particularly funny.

Just because she could.

She had nowhere else to be.

Nothing else to study.

Nothing else to prove today.

She looked at Sagnik.

"What do we do now?"

He smiled.

"I don't know."

Aanya laughed again.

"That's terrifying."

"Why?"

"Because we've never had nothing to do."

He looked at her.

"Maybe we can figure it out."

She nodded.

"Together?"

He didn't hesitate.

"Together."

And they walked away from the examination hall.

For the first time in months—

There was no next paper waiting for them.
