"Mr. Watson, breakfast is ready."
Early in the morning, Claire returned with glutinous rice balls, sandwiches, and fresh milk. Gilbert was already awake, sitting on the bed in a daze, alone and silent. She walked in, set the food on the bedside table, and spoke with a gentle smile.
It was the first time since their reunion that she had spoken to him with such tenderness.
Gilbert's face remained cold.
"You don't need to pity me. I won't be moved by your sympathy."
Claire replied, "Sir, even if I pitied every person in the world, you would be the last. You're the one least deserving of my sympathy. You're rich, capable, sitting on billions. How could someone like me possibly pity you? And frankly, you're not worthy of my pity. I only agreed to take care of you and since I gave my word, I'll honor it. Integrity matters. Besides, you saved me last night. I'm simply repaying a debt."
She bent down to help him. "Come on. I'll take you to the bathroom to wash up."
