Bonnie quickly typed out a reply.
"Charlie , I want to go home. Come pick me up!"
At first, Charlie didn't respond. After a while, however, her phone lit up with an incoming call from "the Big Boss". Startled, she almost hung up on reflex. Avoiding the crowd, she cleared her throat and answered in a whisper, "...Hello? Charlie?"
A man's naturally deep, cool voice came through. "Where's the driver?"
Bonnie had her excuse ready. "The driver had an emergency at home, so I let him go."
"I'm in a video conference. I'll have Derek Lee pick you up." His tone suggested he was already about to hang up.
Bonnie rushed out, "Derek's sick! Really sick, he can't make it!"
On the other end, Charlie frowned. "Sick?" His voice carried that calm edge of someone always in control. "Didn't he look perfectly fine two days ago? What's he got now?"
Perfectly fine, huh…
Bonnie twitched her lips at his wording, hesitating a couple of seconds before saying, "He caught a cold. Headache. Can't go out."
