Chapter 36 - The First Strike

‎Ava's Apartment Early Morning

‎The city awoke slowly, fog hugging the streets like a secret waiting to be revealed. Liam Revel stirred in his crib, the soft whimpers of a dream leaking into reality. Ava sat cross-legged on the couch, Margot's journal open but untouched, her mind racing faster than her pen could capture.

‎Ethan stepped in, coffee in hand, eyes scanning the apartment as if trying to detect invisible threats.

‎"They're moving faster than I expected," he said, setting the cup down. "Claudia isn't patient. She'll strike where we least expect it."

‎Ava closed the journal with a snap, her gaze hardening. "Then we need to be ready. I don't care what it takes. Liam comes first. Always."

‎Ethan knelt beside her, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "We'll protect him. And each other. No matter what she throws at us."

‎The morning light filtered through the blinds, catching in Liam's hair as he toddled into the living room, clutching his bear. His innocent eyes met theirs.

‎"Daddy… Mummy… what are you talking about?"

‎Ava smiled softly, hiding the tension in her chest. "Planning a very important day, baby."

‎Cole Dynamics Same Morning

‎Claudia Deveraux-Cole sat at the head of the boardroom, Victoria poised near the side like a carefully polished sword. The blinds were drawn, but the sunlight found ways to slice through, striking Claudia's perfectly manicured hands.

‎"They think they're ahead," Claudia murmured, eyes fixed on the cityscape outside. "They've uncovered the truth… but truth is a weapon best used sparingly."

‎Victoria tilted her head. "What's the plan?"

‎Claudia's lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "The first strike. They will feel it in the place they hold most dear."

‎Victoria swallowed, a shiver running down her spine. "Liam?"

‎Claudia's gaze hardened. "Of course. The child is the anchor that binds them. If I move carefully, I can twist even love into doubt."

‎Surveillance – Midday

‎A black sedan parked two blocks from Ava's apartment. A man inside adjusted the rearview mirror, scanning the building. Claudia's instructions were clear: observe, report, intimidate but do not touch.

‎Inside the apartment, Ava stepped onto the balcony, stretching her arms. Liam's laughter echoed from inside. Ethan appeared beside her silently, eyes narrowing.

‎"They're watching," he said simply. Ava's stomach tightened, the warning settling like lead.

‎She nodded, voice low. "We expected this. But we won't give them a reason to act recklessly."

‎Ethan placed a hand on her shoulder. "We control the narrative. They react, we adapt. That's how we survive."

‎Unexpected Visitor Afternoon

‎A sharp knock echoed through the apartment. Liam jumped, startled, clutching his bear. Ava opened the door cautiously to find a courier with a small, unmarked box.

‎"For Miss Bennett," the man said, voice neutral, handing it over.

‎Ava turned the box over in her hands. No label. No indication of the sender. Ethan appeared behind her, eyes narrowing.

‎"Open it," he said, voice tight.

‎Inside, they found a single envelope, heavy, sealed with a wax emblem a serpent coiled around a crown. Ava's breath caught. She knew that symbol. Claudia.

‎She opened it carefully. Inside was a single line, written in sharp, precise handwriting:

‎"You think you've won. But the first strike is only the beginning."

‎No signature. No hint. Just a threat dressed as inevitability.

‎Liam whimpered, hiding behind Ava. She held him close, heart pounding.

‎"Stay calm, baby," she whispered, voice firm but gentle. "Nothing can hurt us if we stay together."

‎Ethan clenched his jaw. "It's a warning. And we answer it on our terms."

‎Cole Estate – Evening

‎Claudia reviewed the latest intelligence on Ava and Ethan. Every move they made, every precaution they had patterns. She smiled, fingers steepled.

‎"They're careful," she said, eyes gleaming. "But caution is predictable. Fear is easier to manipulate than bravery."

‎Victoria frowned. "And Liam?"

‎Claudia's smile turned colder. "The anchor. The fulcrum. The first strike will unsettle them but it will not destroy them… unless they misstep."

‎Victoria's gaze faltered. "And if they fight back?"

‎Claudia leaned back, confident, dangerous. "Then they learn that blood may not bind them, but fear always obeys."

‎Night A Family United

‎Back at the apartment, the city lights twinkling like distant stars, Ava, Ethan, and Liam sat together on the couch. Margot's journal lay on the table, untouched but always present.

‎Ava's voice was soft but resolute. "She thinks she can break us. But she doesn't understand Liam is our strength. Not a weapon against us."

‎Ethan held Liam close, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "And we will show her that some things can't be bought, manipulated, or stolen. Family… love… loyalty."

‎Liam yawned, eyes heavy, finally curling against both parents. Ava looked at Ethan, their hands entwined.

‎"This isn't the end," she said quietly.

‎"No," Ethan replied, voice firm. "It's only the beginning."

‎And outside, somewhere in the darkness, a shadow waited. But the fire within the apartment burned brighter, fierce and unyielding a promise that no lie, no threat, and no manipulation could extinguish.
