He was already the master of the Abyss, and the king of the Abyss shouldn't have an obsession. But no one told him that obsessions are something that can't be erased by powerful magic.
Thoughts are an unspeakable torment
Both Ellis and Nyx thought that they had gotten used to each other's absence.
Ellis was still teaching in the magic academy, still studying magic theories, still expressing his opinions in one academic conference after another, living day after day as if nothing had changed.
Nyx was still in control of everything in the Abyss, still powerful, still ruling over the demons, still playing his role.
They both thought they had adapted to losing each other.
However, Ellis would occasionally wake up in the middle of the night from a dream of all the familiar chaos, mischief, and annoyance; he dreamed of Nyx rummaging through the books he had hidden in his study, of the innocent-as-hell expression he put on in front of the Head of the Academy when he was cited, and of the bright eyes that always had a few sly smiles in them ...
But when he woke up, the room was silent.
And Nyx, he had grown up and was an adult demon, no longer the simple, ignorant, heartless little demon who would be foolishly tricked because he didn't understand the contract. He would stand alone in front of the dark throne after taking care of all the affairs of the abyss, looking out at the border of the endless abyss, where the direction to the human world was.
He wouldn't cross the border, he knew he wouldn't go back.
But sometimes a thought would flash through his mind - if he hadn't lost control, if Ellis hadn't made a decision so quickly, if he had explained more, if Ellis had been willing to wait a little longer. ...
If there is an "if"...
However, the most worthless thing in this world is "if".They can never go back to the past.
The instructors at the Magic Academy rarely mentioned Nyx.They thought that Ellis had completely let go of this contracted demon.
When Ellis opened Nyx's bedroom door again, everything in the room looked like nothing had ever happened in it. A black and red magical butterfly flew out of a dusty book from the shelf, and then dissipated the moment it came out, and Nyx's flamboyant signature could be seen on the book, as well as annotations about the time and the words: "It's already been a month since I came to the human world, I went to the marketplace with my old magic wand, I bought some new books, and I like Rustoria's books the best!Laustria's book, the next time a new book comes out I want Ellis to buy it for me.
Clumps of paper were thrown on the messy table, some of which were written with words scolding Ellis, some with Nix s supreme words, and some of which were records of small things in life ... Ellis put the paper clumps back again, and finally stood and turned around the room, not knowing what to do, or closed the door.
Until one day, a new tutor, in a chance walk into Ellis's study, saw the deepest part of his bookshelf, placed a delicate black magic box.
That tutor asked curiously, "What's in here?"
Ellis gave him a faint look and didn't answer.
And it was only when that tutor left that Ellis reached out his hand and slowly stroked the surface of that box.
He knew what was inside.
It was Nyx's favorite trinket at one time, some of the worthless knickknacks he'd collected at the academy, things that he'd taken in passing when he found them interesting but never returned.
Ellis should have gotten rid of these things a long time ago, but he didn't.
He didn't even know why he still had them.
He just - couldn't let go.
In the palace of the Abyss, there was a room that had never been opened to outsiders. It was Nyx's private territory, and no demon was allowed to enter.
The room's arrangement was out of place with the style of the Abyss, and even carried a few hints of not belonging to the Abyss - the way those bookshelves were arranged, the style of the tables and chairs, and even the design of the windows all looked like shadows of a certain world.Nyx never admitted he was deliberately imitating anything.
He would ghost a friend when he went to the human world and asked him to bring a cake and tea, and was disappointed when it didn't taste the way he had hoped it would.
He would subconsciously try to reprimand the younger demons when he saw them playing pranks, only to see them write "Never give in, rule the secret base of Hitlila" on a banner, and then unconsciously fall into memories of some school rules that he had somehow memorized.
But sometimes, after taking care of business in the Abyss, he would walk into that room, sit in a chair, stare at the window that didn't even open to the human world, and fall into silence.
He wouldn't go back to Ellis. But he couldn't really forget Ellis either.
They both thought time would wash away everything. But time never took anything away, it just made all the emotions sink in deeper.
