Nyx cocked her head at him for a moment, the smile at the corners of her mouth becoming more exaggerated, "Really? That's 'special' to be in charge of, Mentor Ellis."
Ellis ignored his flirtation and continued on his way.But Nyx knew that this matter was far from over.
Nyx looked at the invitation in his hand with a look of disgust, then glared up at Ellis, "Are you serious?"
Ellis nodded lightly, "This is a formal social occasion for contracted demons, you should learn how to conduct yourself on such occasions."
Nyx rolled his eyes and slammed the invitation on the table, "That just sounds boring as hell."
Ellis was unfazed, "You need to learn the rules."
"Rules?"Nyx sneered, "The demons of the Abyss don't talk about rules at all."
Ellis looked at him calmly, "This is not the Abyss."
Nyx choked and half-heartedly grunted as he clasped his arms, "... Then you must at least tell me what this party is all about."
Ellis explained, "The Contracted Demon Gala is a place for high-ranking magicians and their contracted demons to interact, both as a socializing opportunity and a place to showcase their respective abilities."
Nyx frowned, "Sounds like showing off demons as pets."
Ellis looked at him, his tone devoid of emotion, "If you don't want to be the one being shown off, then act stronger than they are."
Nyx instantly narrowed his eyes and stared at Ellis for half a day before suddenly revealing a meaningful smile, "Has anyone ever told you that you're getting more and more skillful at using provocation."
Ellis didn't respond, apparently acquiescing to this.
Nyx took a deep breath and casually picked up the invitation and twirled it between his fingers a few times, "Alright then, let's go see what these contracted demons are really like."
Ellis nodded gently, "Dress formally and behave appropriately."
Nyx immediately flashed a nasty grin, "You're afraid I'll lose your face?"
Ellis looks at him without a ripple, "It's not 'afraid', it's 'sure'."
Nyx: "..."
On the day of the party, Nyx stood in front of the mirror and surveyed himself with extreme reluctance.
Ellis had given him an extremely formal black tuxedo with a figure-flattering cut that made him look extraordinarily aristocratic, and even a bowtie studded with dark gems.
Nyx tugged at the collar with disgust, "Do I really have to wear this?"
Ellis stood in the doorway and swept his gaze around, his tone bland, "At least it doesn't look like a wandering demon who just ran away from a chaotic hell."
Nyx bristled, "You know, demons derive their intimidation from chaos and unruliness, not these false costumes."
Ellis didn't move to look at him, "If you want people to be impressed, learn to hide your fangs when it suits you."
Nyx grunted, "Bound hands and flashy stuff."Eventually there was no more resistance.
At the party, Nyx followed Ellis, lazily surveying the surroundings.
The entire venue was brightly lit and exquisitely decorated, and the surrounding area was filled with magicians and their contracted demons. Most of those contracted demons stayed quietly beside their masters, looking meek and noble, in contrast to Nyx, who was a restless demon at first glance.
Nyx snorted and muttered in a low voice, "These guys are demons? How come they look tamer than a nobleman's cat?"
Ellis glanced at him, "Most indentured demons choose to obey their masters rather than rebel."
Nyx raised an eyebrow and gave a wry smile, "Then you're unlucky to have indentured me."
Ellis spoke calmly, "I'm well aware of that."
Nyx was about to say something else when a wizard in ornate robes walked over with a silver-haired indentured demon at his side and nodded slightly to Ellis, "Grand Wizard Ellis, long time no see."
Ellis responded faintly, "Albert."
Albert's gaze fell on Nyx and he smiled slightly, "Is this your contracted demon?"
Nyx narrowed his eyes and leaned lazily against Ellis' side, his tone careless, "What, it doesn't look like it?"
Albert laughed softly, "I just didn't expect that you would contract a demon with such a ... 'lively' personality."
