"It's simple: I go to the library, and I'll be back before 8 o'clock," Zephyr finally uttered as he grabbed his clothes and placed them on the ironing board. "I mean, it's not like I'm a bad guy, right?" His words hinted guilt. "And she said it wasn't a date," his voice continued, as its words rang loud, as if their sound was infused by the clothes that that lay fixed on the iron bird's structure.

And Nix, who had been listening to all this chaos, only kept quiet, as if thinking that any of his words would increase its intensity.

Wearing all his clothes and grabbing a jacket, Zephyr made his way to the door, preparing for his leave.

BANG!

The door swung shut, leaving a room once filled with air released, now lone and empty.

____

The streets rang loud with noises of busy cars, and sidewalks filled with its people moved around at a pace that seemed rather too tedious. As he moved, he couldn't help but remember how different this new reality was from his old one.

Buildings that had bright lights even in the brightness of the day. Expensive cars that roamed around, seemingly unattainable to the passing folks who had grown too used to the current environment. It seemed too normal.

And for some time, Zephyr had even forgotten that his reality was on the screens of a well-known novel.

When he died, he had heard of some talks about the anime adaptation coming out. And at that time, it proved surprising, and Zephyr really couldn't help but feel regret knowing that he died before seeing it. 'Fuck,' he shouted in his mind as he realized that he had actually died before GTA 6. "I guess good things don't come alone."

[Indeed,] and for the first time since Zephyr left the house, Nix finally spoke. "You know, I actually forgot that you even existed," Zephyr joked, as his eyes wandered on the outside stores, selling all kinds of foods from hot dogs to burgers.

[All men deserve a moment alone,] Nix announced.

"Lol," Zephyr crackled, "I thought you said you were not a man."

[I'm not.]

"Then why did you just say you are?"

[I was talking about you,] Nix answered with swiftness, yet his words only got slight giggles from Zephyr, who was feeling like his walk felt too refreshing.

______

SQUEAK!

The door of a library finally opened, revealing a tall young man with a striking figure. His face showing signs of amusement, as if before he had entered, he was met with something that seemed to entertain.

Looking around, he only saw rows of empty seats, with only a couple being an exception. And as he walked closer to a counter, his eyes gained view of the woman he had once encountered. Yet this time, his heart did not seem to scream or shout in protest; his body remained cool, as if immersed in comfort.

"Did adaptation affect me?" his words finally asked, as if they had grown too comfortable with asking the question.

[Affirmative,] Nix spoke [It doesn't matter if the reaction is good or bad. Your body will adapt to everything and all things. Anything which could prove a weakness—your being is designed to adapt to it. So yes—you won't stumble on your words anymore when you see a woman who tingles your interest.]

Zephyr moved as he sighed in acknowledgment. From a distance, what he was experiencing could look like a bad thing, but even though the feeling had disappeared, even though his body and heart resisted to shiver, 'he did not lose interest,' he could feel it deep within him.

When he was now almost 5 feet close, her face moved from the stack of books she had been reading. As her glasses stumbled low, his face right next to hers as his gaze looked down on her short-sighted vision.

"Hey," his words made sound. And her cheeks, as if in response, slightly formed red marks of blush.

"Hey," she softly answered. Her voice so faint it would be hard not to recognize as a whisper.

Their eyes interlocked as Zephyr's heart made its sound.

Beat-beat!

It spoke volume.

'Are you sure my body adapted?' Zephyr's mind thought swiftly.

[Yep, but I guess we have an exception,] Nix began to laugh. A laughter that could only make its sound in the depth of Zephyr's self-consciousness, its voice sounding oddly robotic, leaving him to think of nothing but the woman who stood before his lingering gaze of ocean.

______

Standing up from the seat she had been sitting on, her eyes broke lock off their once lingering contact that locked deep in the man that stood before her.

"You came," she spoke, her words hinting a sound of disbelief. Moving her body, she began to retreat, as if giving him hints to follow—so he did. Moving with her to a room with a wall of see-through glass. As they entered, only a single desk with two chairs came to view. And in its middle was a well-placed chessboard.

Moving, she sat on the opposite, and Zephyr did the same. Now sitting facing each other face to face.

"Oh, sorry, I forgot to ask your name," Zephyr asked rather quickly, but the woman only seemed unaffected, as if she intended not to answer his newly asked question.

Clack!

She moved a chess piece. Her words silent and her red-colored lips closed.

Zephyr didn't know what to say, and his expression grew nothing but signs of confusion.

[She wants you to move,] Nix's voice broke through. "What? I don't fucking know how to play chess," Zephyr's mind ran in protest. But then instantly—he knew. He didn't know why, but his mind mysteriously revealed and understood what stood before him.

[Now play,] Nix spoke, as Zephyr raised a brow, wondering how Nix even knew anything about chess.

And so he moved his first piece. As a smile played on the face of the woman who sat before him—and so he also 'smiled.'

______[A Million years later🍑]

"Fuck," his mind shouted within, as he looked at the board he had been fully engaged in for 2 straight hours.

[Checkmate,] Nix spoke, holding robotic laughter. As Zephyr's expression grew ugly but beautiful. And for the first time in 5 losing games, the woman who sat right next to him slightly giggled in laughter, causing Zephyr to smile in reaction as his hand scratched the back of his scalp.

Standing up, the girl made her way to the door. "Come back tomorrow," she spoke, leaving him to gaze at the efforts that brought nothing but failure.

Raising his phone to see the time, it was already past 7, which meant he was almost late for his next attempt at making failing connections.

[Better hurry up, my boy,] Nix taunted, as slight giggles brought sound, and Zephyr couldn't help but wonder how a being without a mind could even gain laughter retained.
