It appeared that the reason Lain had been allowed to roam freely for such an extended period was that all the high-ranking adventurers had their hands full. The V.B.G. is a group of S-rank adventurers whose true abilities remain a mystery. Their objective is the overthrow of the current government. For years, countless adventurers have attempted to dismantle the V.B.G., but at most, they've only managed to take down a few of its prominent figures. The organization is divided into twelve distinct divisions, of which only four remain operational. Moreover, the identity of their leader has never been revealed.
When Wal and Lilith regained consciousness, this was the first information relayed not only to them, but also to Lain and me.
Lilith had no recollection of the battle against Lain. We explained this to Wal and fabricated a story, claiming she had simply been rendered unconscious.
Upon meeting Lain, neither of them recognized her as the A-rank devil they had previously fought. Still, Lilith instinctively sensed she was a powerful devil of some kind.
Wal made a brief remark to Lilith—one to which her response would remain etched in my memory:
"Aren't you going to have trouble with the, y'know, smell of a devil?" (Wal)
"I should be fine. After all, I've grown used to it—Rin reeks of the devil's scent." (Lilith)
