Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: First Betrayal

The mission had been going according to plan each faction watched over with care, secrets revealed, and the delicate negotiations going as hoped. But I should have known better than to think it was too good to be true. The warning signs were always there, just beneath the surface. A minor lapse in protocol, a careless remark here, a glance exchanged in passing there it all pointed to one unavoidable fact: someone was playing a deadly game behind my back.

I hadn't even seen it initially, too intent on maintaining the peace and playing the delicate alliances we were forging. But as we progressed with our mission, the cracks began to appear. The tension between the team had become almost tangible, as though the burden of our mission was too great to handle for some of them. And then, just when I thought I'd got it all in hand, I discovered the first betrayal.

It occurred on our second encounter with the Lords of Chaos. Raven had been dispatched to infiltrate their ranks, and the strategy had been to use her influence to manipulate their unstable leaders into a tentative peace. At least, that's what I believed was occurring. She had been absent for days more time than I had anticipated. I began to feel an uneasy gnawing, but I remained concentrated, relying on my instincts to lead me. The team knew how to do this. We were ready for the unknown.

But nothing was ready for what I was to discover.

I had gotten an encrypted message a one that set off every warning bell in my head. A code I recognized. Zatanna. I didn't hesitate, using the portal network to get to the Watchtower. I had to double check that everyone was still on course. I had been hearing from all the factions, but there was something not right with Zatanna's voice in the last communication. Too precise, too polished.

As I entered, the situation in front of me was more than different from what I had anticipated. The Justice League was assembled, but tension lay suspended in the air. Zatanna was at the forefront, with Superman. Then there was Batman jaw gritted, stance stiff. This was a far cry from the harmony I believed we had found. I could sense the pressure of their gazes before they even recognized my arrival.

"Something's wrong," I stated, my tone cutting through the air. "Where is Raven?"

Zatanna paused, her gaze darting to Batman. The quiet hung for a moment too long. I could sense something was amiss. I could feel it biting at the fringes of my mind. Zatanna was holding back.

Superman moved a step closer, his expression dark. "Raven isn't returning."

I stopped dead. "What do you mean, she isn't returning?"

"She's entered into a pact with the Lords of Chaos," Batman explained, his tone unforgiving and detached. "She's been providing them with information. It's the only reason she's disappeared like this."

I could feel the rage well up inside me, a flash of heat that threatened to engulf me. "You're telling me that one of my own betrayed us?" The words felt bitter in my mouth, but I had no choice but to accept it. Raven had been one of our most trusted members, someone I had trusted someone I had thought was an ally.

Zatanna advanced, her complexion ashen, eyes opened wide with bewilderment. "I did not wish to accept it either, but the proof is evident. She has been feeding information to the Lords of Chaos. They offered her power if she collaborated. She has been working both sides."

I walked away, pacing in the room. My thoughts were racing. I had trusted her. She was to be the one to guide me through the deeper currents of magic, to be a steady hand in this unstable world. But now it appeared she had been tainted by the very forces we were attempting to hold back.

I never saw this coming," I grumbled to myself. "But we can't let her ruin everything. We have to put an end to it before it's too late."

Batman's eyes slitted. "She's not the only one who's been playing games. There are others small but important changes. People are getting anxious. I don't think they trust you any longer."

I looked at him, thoughts muddled by confusion. "What are you talking about?

"Some of the League are questioning your methods," Superman said quietly. "Your power. Your decisions. How far you're willing to go for this cause."

I couldn't believe what they were saying. After all the things I'd done, all the risks that I'd taken in order to protect everyone, now they're questioning me? I had done nothing but remain open. Anything I did, I did with the greater good in mind. The burden of divine knowledge lay heavy on my shoulders, and for a split second, I took into consideration all of their skepticism, all of their doubt.

"Do you mean I'm losing them?" I said, the words more statement than question.

"It's not just you," Batman replied, his tone gentler now, although still tainted with suspicion."It's the way things are changing. The League is no longer one entity. There are cracks forming, fissures in the ground. You've given us greater power, yes but power does not always ensure cohesion."

I massaged my temples, a headache brewing at the sudden flood of revelations. I could feel the pressure of my new powers this cosmic power bearing down on me in ways I hadn't prepared for. I'd done everything I could to guarantee our success, to hold my team together, but ultimately all it had taken was one betrayal to destabilize all that I had worked towards.

Zatanna's voice cut through my reverie. "We can't wait. Raven's already making her play. We need to find her and shut the threat down. We have to move fast, before this gets any worse.

I glanced at her, then at Batman, and then at Superman. There was no other option but this. I had to act quickly, before Raven before anyone destroyed all that I had created. The cosmic knowledge inside me buzzed with desperation, and I understood exactly how much more there was at stake now. This wasn't merely about a magical war between factions. This was about the future of the very team I had wanted to keep safe.

"We brought her," I said coldly and firmly. "We brought her back, or we stopped her whatever it took."

But even as I spoke, I knew in my heart that what had been done could not be undone. The trust was shattered, and no matter what we fought for, nothing would ever return to the way it was.
