"I apologise, but I eavesdropped a little," Carl said, his eyes refusing to meet mine the way they usually did, always bold, always steady. Now he stared at the floor like it was suddenly more fascinating than anything else.
My breath caught in my chest.
I blinked. "You did what? Jesus Carl!"
"Don't worry," he added quickly. "I couldn't quite grasp everything said."
I stared at him, stunned, cheeks warming with embarrassment. Of course, he heard something. He wouldn't have said anything if he hadn't. I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and shifted in my seat.
"Carl..."
He finally looked up, and those storm-gray eyes of his were unreadable for once.
Then he asked calmly, firmly.
"Would you accept him as your man?"
I knew he was going to asked this again. I furrowed my brows, pretending I didn't know what he meant.
He leaned forward slightly. "Would you take Jake as your man?"
